  1. Sorry now I feel bad................its OK I'm over it now!! I'm still going to do a Yellow and Black one but it's just going to be in the shape of a 5 string P bass instead! Does that make you a little bit happier ๐Ÿ˜€
  2. First coat of Black on.............. I'll leave it till after the weekend now so it can harden completely then I'll flatten it a little bit and then second coat it I think I will definitely go with the chrome hardware but I'm not sure what to do the pickguard out of? I don't know if a chrome/mirror pickguard would be too much or should I just not have a pickguard or what about black or white??.............. Ideas please!?!............๐Ÿ˜€
  3. I decided last nite that I'm going to do a more traditional fender style headstock shape and I'm going to swap the chrome hardware off of my Quincy Corvette copy with the black I was going to use for this build as I think the Corvette copy would look better with black hardware as its natural Ash anyway......... ๐Ÿ˜€
  4. Not much more to report except I've routed out the neck pocket and pickup cavities and just done a second coat of primer........... Will be ready to sand down tomorrow and get the first top coat on it........... ๐Ÿ˜€
  5. There's just something about it that I just didn't like........... Everytime I looked at it I just thought, Meh!! So I thought I would probably get roughly the same amount for the body as I would for the whole bass so I might as well use the hardware etc on another project If your interested in the body you could always make me an offer?? ๐Ÿ˜œ
  6. Well here's a kinda mockup of how it might look??.......... I'm thinking possibly doing the headstock similar to the Warwick style as I think it's a nice simple shape?? ๐Ÿค”
  7. I'm going to use the hardware, neck and pickups out of this build they are 100mm wide and the raised centre is 95mm wide?? I'm going to reshape the headstock then probably sell the body.............. ๐Ÿ˜€
  8. I've primed the body still needs a second coat but I'm going to rout out the pickups and neck pocket on my lunch break today............
  9. All right for some where you going anywhere nice?? Yeah I was thinking kinda the same thing re the pickups I'll just rout them and see how it looks?........... ๐Ÿ˜€
  10. Hi @Christine hope you had a lovely time on holiday? Thats very nice!! I'm going to have a more traditional style pickguard but I haven't decided what colour yet I'm thinking maybe brushed alu might look good?? ๐Ÿค” I'm going to do some updated photos today as I've done the raised centre now but realised I've made not wide enough so most pickups wont fit in it so I just need to sort that out first ๐Ÿคฌ
  11. I had never heard of grain filling with egg whites so I looked it up Does this help you @honza992?
  12. Sorry @SpondonBassed we must have had our wires crossed I thought you meant the deep water marine mollusc with the colourful spiral shell!! ๐Ÿ˜
  13. That was one of the reasons why I've decided to go down the Fenderbird-esque route also I don't particularly like the look of the thunderbird neck. I'm thinking now that I can't really call it a Fenderbird as the body shape is probably closer to a not so pointy Explorer?? I spose I could call it a Exploder or a Fenlorer?? ๐Ÿคจ
  14. I didn't realise you liked a Volute! I can't believe you haven't mentioned it before!! ๐Ÿ˜œ
  15. If I was not going to paint it I might have gone down that route, I agree the exposed edges of ply can look really nice on the right thing but maybe on another project??.... This build is more of an experiment to see how it comes out and sounds, and maybe dispel some perceptions of ply bodies guitars being inferior to solid body guitars if it doesn't turn out how I'm hoping I'll just use the body as a template and remake it out of solid wood.............. ๐Ÿ˜€
  16. @Unknown_User I've sanded the top edge to 240 grit so thats why it looks smooth there has been a slight bit of tearout but I'm going to fill the edges with two-pack filler then sand it back again before I prime the body. It also helps if you buy better quality ply I'm using WBP but you don't need to go to the extreme of buying birch or marine ply just make sure whatever your going to use to cut the blank is sharp and not too coarse that should minimise the tearout... Make sure you start a thread when you start doing your build.......... ๐Ÿ˜€
  17. The body is all glued up and I've started to shape it,ive still got to glue on the raised centre and fill the body but it's coming along nicely............ ๐Ÿ˜€ There's going to be a slight change of plan in not going to do this one yellow (as I really want to do a Yellow 5 string P) so I've decided this one is going to be satin Black with Maple fretboard and probably matching headstock...........
  18. Unfortunately you can't generalise when it comes to wood, every piece of wood is different and can vary in weight and density even in the same species, I was surprised when I purchased some calibrated Canadian Maple and calibrated Brown Oak from British hardwoods and the Maple boards were heavier!?! Go figure?? I was just going to say about moisture content as that can vary a lot even in dry wood so that will also effect the weight not necessarily the density...........
  19. I agree that most people associate Oak with furniture but there is just as much furniture made out of Mahogany yet that's OK to build a body out of? Also granted Oak is heavier than Ash, Alder, Mahogany etc but it's lighter than Bubinga, Wenge and Ovangkol etc which are widely used for guitar making so I think that people's perception needs to change and use more widely available/sustainable woods otherwise more woods will be added to the endangered list??
  20. Just watched both videos and I agree with @Marcoelwray and @Andyjr1515 Oak is a lovely wood and it isn't as heavy as people think I've used it in one of my builds and it's fine the bass isn't overly heavy (but saying that the body is very thin) I couldn't get over Ben's comment about Oak being ugly!! Oak can look stunning like the piece in your video with lovely figuring, also it can be understated and look very classy So if oaks ugly then WTF is this all about??............
  21. That's a great name to put on my basses "Imposter" I think I'm going to have to use it!! ๐Ÿ˜ A 'Ray will have to wait a while because I'm doing my Fenderbird build now, then I'm going to finally do my 5 string Precision and I'm toying with the idea of doing a semi hollow after that? That's only if I can get the Bass Embargo lifted that Mrs Jimothey has slapped on me!! ๐Ÿคฌ
  22. Great job your attention to detail is exceptional! Love the finished look! Only problem now its got me Gassing for a Stingray!! ๐Ÿ˜
  23. The middle core is now cut and chambered I will cut the top and bottom in the next few days out of 6mm ply then start gluing it all together I'm thinking that to make it a but different perhaps go with a PJ pickup config instead of the standard pickup choice??.............
  24. I think I'll wait to see how big you are before I commit myself!! ๐Ÿ˜
