  1. I was going to say the same thing!! 😁
  2. I think you'd lose most of them with the pickups and bridge but I spose I could lose the pickguard and have them running down either side of the raised section 🤔
  3. I got started today the template has been rough cut just got to sand it to smooth it all off I've changed the shape slightly from the original by making a more of a curved bottom of the body, bringing the waist slightly closer together which I think looks better? I'm not sure if I'm going to put the raised centre section in as I think I might prefer it flat topped but we'll have to wait and see?? 🤔
  4. I would say you need to seek professional help!! If that bass was mine it would never leave my hands!! 😁
  5. Quite a few people don't like using routers as you can easily make a catastrophic mistake with them but I mostly use them with a jig and a bearinged cutter so that does eliminate a bit of the degree for mistakes but even though I've been using them for the last 20 years accidents still happen just look at what happened earlier in this thread!! You can shape the body, round over the edges, rout out pickup cavities, etc easier and quicker with a router but they are not essential If you buy cheap shuttering ply then you will struggle with tear out but if you go for a WBP ply then generally it won't tear out as much, if it does you shouldn't worry too much as this will only be a test run piece. Good luck if you decide to go ahead with a build! There's no better feeling than playing your homebuilt bass for the first time and thinking 'I made that!!' but be warned it is very addictive I only did my first one last year and this is my 6th build and I'm already planning the next one!! 😁
  6. I've got some Crown Tools stuff and your right they are great! I did treat myself to a set of Ashley Iles when my business was going great £150 for a set of 6 but you can get them unbelievable sharp and even when using on Oak they keep their edge for ages!! 😀
  7. Very nice looking stubbies! Are they Ashley Iles?
  8. Yes that was the look I was going for! It's not to everyone's taste but I really like having contrasting colours on my builds............. 😀
  9. Thanks I only use a router, jigsaw, hand tools, orbital sander and a bobbin sander on all my builds, if I had a bandsaw, thicknesser etc it would make life easier I'm sure that if you have basic woodworking tools/skills and took your time you could make your own custom bass body. If you get stuck doing something there will be a number of people on here that would be more than happy to advise/help you? If you are thinking of doing it I would advise using cheap wood for your first attempt so that if things do go awry then it won't be a costly mistake........... 😀
  10. It smells a lot like cedar to me but kinda spicy if that makes sense 🤨
  11. Here's an updated sofa snap......... 😀
  12. Or how about this for a more thrashy/new ska feel? Personally I prefer this version to the original? I really like Reel Big Fish so I might be a bit biased?? 😀
  13. Just got to do the final set up and fit the block inlays when they arrive but other than that it's now finished!!............. I'm really pleased with the way it's turned out!! 😁
  14. I've now done 3 coats on the front and 3 on the back and cavity cover which I've veneered just to give the back a bit of colour, Next job is to solder up the pickups, drill for the ground to the bridge, fit the jack socket plate and strap buttons then I think I'm ready to string it up 😁
  15. I've just checked and it's the same seller using 2 different accounts,1 private and 1 business! The listing on the private account tells you to contact the business account for more details??
  16. I dont know if I'm missing something but these look like they are the same bass but with 2 different prices?? https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F254125506875 https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F273701857362
  17. I decided to not veneer the pickups in the end......... I think it looks better without!!....... 😀
  18. I've had an idea that I'm not sure on and need people's opinions......... Would it be too much if I veneered the tops of the pickups or would it be better to leave them black?? 🤔
  19. I personally can't see the problem with the headstock maybe shave a little bit off?? But if Fleabag is happy then that's all that matters!! 😁
  20. After a few stupidly busy weeks at work I finally got some time to do some more! I've done the matching headstock now and got a few coats of wipe in satin poly........... Control cavity is all routed out just got to make the cover and the electrics have arrived so I'll fit them in the next few days then its finishing time!!........ I'm considering getting some block inlay decals for the neck which I think will finish it off nicely 😀
  21. If it wasn't leopard print I think I would take a punt on it!! 😁 https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F401709822901
  22. I kind of echo what most others have said I like most genre's of music except one that I can't stomach and that's jazz free form/trad whichever flavour it comes in! I just can't listen to it I have certain bands that I listen to every week RATM, Iron Maiden, Phrophets of Rage, Green Day, The Black Crowes, Audioslave, Mumford and Sons, RHCP, AC/DC, The Pogues, (early) Guns N Roses and The Ravens Age etc so it's a quite diverse pool but if I like something then I like it!!
  23. I thought that it might be heavy so it's going to be chambered so hopefully that with keep the weight down a bit I'm going to construct the body with a 25mm ply core with 6mm front and back the 25mm core will be chambered like this..............
  24. After following @Christine's Thunderbird build it has swayed me (as I was never really a fan of them) to make my own...... It's going to be a Fenderbird but I haven't decided whether it's going to be 4 or 5 string as yet?? As I've been told they suffer from neck dive would a 4 string would be better to keep the weight of the headstock down or would the difference in weight be negligible??......... If I decide to go down the 4 string route I would string it BEAD anyway I know this isn't going to be a popular choice but I'm going to make the body out of chambered plywood (I tried one of my friends homemade ply bodied bitsa Telecaster and his American deluxe Telecaster and couldn't tell the difference in the sound if anything the ply bodied Tele had better sustain so that got me thinking??) it's going to be painted and I'm leaning towards Yellow with black hardware and pickguard something a bit like this? With a maple/maple block neck........... I don't really like the 3 point bridges tha t are normally on them so I'm thinking about a tun-o-matic bridge instead and I might go active with active/passive push/pull bypass like on my Quincy, 5 string and 6 string build
