Looking at the pic of the headstock it does look like it's not central I'll have to check it when I go back to work tomorrow I reckon it's just an optical illusion (well....I hope it is?!) ๐คจ
-
Got a coat of orange on it today whilst waiting for the neck to arrive Its a bit patchy but I'm loving the orange! @BrunoBass hopefully soon I'll be joining the orange bass club!! ๐
-
Yes very!! I completely sanded the pickguard back to original and resprayed it and it looks OK now Still need to sand the headstock back to maple as I don't think it would look right colour matched I'm going to l leave them both till Sunday and start getting it all back together ready for the nut and bridge when they turn up ๐
-
I haven't got a clue what's going on first the body reacted (spotting), sanded it back a bit sprayed another coat now its fine Put a final coat on the pickguard now that's reacted (crackled) ๐คฌ
-
I'm having the same problem with my conversion plastikote satin gave it a key then sprayed over with rustoleums painters touch but mine hasn't crackled its spotted instead ๐ค
-
I'll let you know when I've finished but I can't see how putting one extra string will make that much if a difference to neck stability My Ibby 5 string has a 45mm nut (which is 3mm wider than my P) and the heel is 75mm (which is 11mn wider than the P) the neck thickness are the same and both have a single truss rod
-
Well got started on the pickguard and body today Pickguard has had the first coat on it and has been flattened needs a final coat But the body has had a reaction in places so I'm going to sand it back a bit and respray it before I go home tonight You get the rough idea ๐

Just saw this I wonder................
-
Only got the tuner fitted today as I'm waiting for the bridge, nut and pickguard to come from China
-
Most of the bridges I've looked at are the curved musicman style and they are all 16mm spacing https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F190687163850 Or this one https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F362150047845 There's loads of 16.5mm on ebay
-
Mines the same its got a 42mm nut and 64mm at the heel so that's why I went for the 43mm because I thought 0.5mm overhang won't be noticeable What bridge have you got because the smallest string spacing I could find was 16mm?
-
I'm going to use an 5 string acoustic bass nut as they are 43mm because every other nut I've found is 45mm I worked out that I would need 9mm spacing at the nut and the bridge spacing needs to be 16mm otherwise the strings will be too close to the edge of the fretboard (sorry if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs) ๐

Yeah I just used Halfords own brand primer and I used the Plastikote satin top coat, Are you going to keep the 4 string neck because that's what I'm doing to one of my P basses at the mo and if it comes out OK I'm going to do it to my Jazz bass as well......... ๐
-
My '72ish P bass body is Paulownia and I didn't seal it as such I sanded it to 240 grit, then I just did 3 coats of under coat, flattening after the second coat then 3 top coats and the body came out flat with no grain sinkage I suppose it depends on how thick the paper is? If its like tissue paper then you might see some grain through it but if it's quite thick then I think you should be go fine ๐ค
-
Its an adjustable height nut and the grub screw goes almost the full width so I thought it would be easier just paring off a couple of mm off the fretboard, it only took 30 secs with a sharp chisel ๐
-
Got started today on the conversion First job was to remove the nut, the nut I'm replacing it with is 3mm deeper so I had to pare off the nut slot flat Then I marked out for the 5th tuner...... Then the moment of no going back I drilled the hole for the the 5th tuner..... Tomorrow I'll remove the bridge and fill the holes and get started on changing the pickguard ๐

Totally agree looks amazing!! ๐ -
It's now all filled and sanded, I like to put a coat of primer on so I can if there's any slumpage (I think that's a word ๐ค if it's not it should be !?!) But it looks like this had come out OK?
-
Finally got started on this build! I've filled all the old cavity holes just waiting for the glue to go off then I'll fill it with two pack then sand it all down lovely and flat The body is a slab body so I've got to do the belly and arm carves ๐

That's what I've done now a couple of kit builds then jumped in doing a neck thru @Andyjr1515 is right when you carve the neck and then you step back and look at it it's really satisfying ๐ -

That really makes the poplar come alive! Looks great mate! ๐ -
That's come out great! , did you just use a coping saw or did you use a scrollsaw aswell?
-
I kinda agree that putting 'dragon' does make them sound cheap which they certainly aren't! but 'Ddraig' is a very nice touch, just my opinion but I think I would rotate the dragon 90ยฐso it matches the 'Ddraig'

Not much done today I've sorted out the headstock thickness I've taken the edging off from the side of the neck and headstock in the end I felt it just didn't look right?....... I'm definitely going for Black hardware but after @TheGreek's comment about an Ebony fretboard its got me reconsidering the Maple fretboard and going back to my original idea of Ebony? I think both would look good but.......Opinions please Ebony or Maple??? ๐ค
