  1. No hit song writing credits means you never get a taste of the big money. Blue
  2. Yeah, I've heard different versions of the Stones gig. My thoughts, he never really got the offer. Who turns down a gig with the biggest money making machine in rock & roll ? Blue
  3. I've seen Doug in really small clubs with Vernon. And I really like the guy. I think he's really cool. However, I don't think he's had an easy career. A few good breaks here and there but not much more. Educate me if I'm wrong. Has he written any hit songs? Blue
  4. Monitoring would be key. For me I can hear my bass through the monitors during sound check. But after the first set when the guitarists have turned up to 11, forget it. Blue
  5. Does it depend on the type and level of gigs a guy is playing? Does it make sense to go smpless for small Pub gigs? Does it depend on the level of the technology, meaning for going ampless means it has to be expensive and high end. Blue
  6. Even at the local level it's important. Ever bring a guy into a band and you notice after the 1st couple of gigs he only packs up his own gear and leaves. Not cool. Off topic: Pick of me in 1969 playing my Gibson EB-3. Nobody can tell me I'm not "hood" 😂 Blue
  7. I get where Alice is coming from when he says; "I don't have time for 2nd string guys" Blue
  8. 2 points, I know Billy's current drummer and I understand Billy is very generous to his sidemen. I think breaking into the upper segments of the hired gun arena back in the 70s was different. The criteria to get in was different. Today many hired guns are recruited from schools like Berklee and Juliard. I think Jeff Beck found Tal at Juliard. Blue
  9. Yeah, I was a good boy. Drugs were one part of the 60s I stayed away from. I didn't want anything to spoil all the fun. Blue
  10. I don't remember the gig, I know the pic was taken in 1969. I don't remember what happened to the bass. I might have traded it for a 1957 pre CBS Fender P. Blue
  11. My Gibson EB-3 from 1969. Great bass I don't remember the gig or what happened to it. Wow, I had a lot of hair in 69.😁 Blue
  12. Did you like it or get anything out of it? I think for anyone who has ever thought about persuing or is persuing performance as a career. I did. I actually know the guy that replaced Liberty Devito pretty well. Blue
  13. McCartney, whether we like it or not is in a league of his own Still kicking butt at 75. Blue
  14. Maybe my Gibson Gold To LP Bass. It looks so cool, but the neck is too chunky. I don't have the heart to sell it, even though I could use the 2 grand. Blue
  15. I've played in both cover (but not the type vof cover bands you guys reference) and originals bands. I would play in an originals band again if there was a local originals scene, and support and you could make money. I would also play in an originals band at the national touring headliner ( 250 seat venues) level. But at the local 1 gig every 3 months level, no way. Blue
  16. I think we're talking about originals bands at the local level. Same goal? According to some originals bands they write songs for their own enjoyment not to entertain an audience. Blue
  17. Just remember, if your going to lump all cover bands together we can just as easily lump all originals bands together too. Blue
  18. Good points, I think the problem with this discussion on BC is the tendency to lump all cover bands together and that there's no creativity in covers. It's just not true. When guys say there is no creativity in covers, they should make it perfectly clear and actually speak for themselves and say; "There's no creativity in the covers I've played and heard" Blue
  19. I'd say we do a good job with our originals and covers. However if we were 4 guys I'm sure we'd struggle. Like your band our strength is the believable charisma and personality of our lady lead guitarist. There's just not many ladies in our area that can sing and play blistering 70s style guitar solos. Blue
  20. If your doing great originals or great covers you should be proud and feel superior. However, marginal covers and marginal originals are nothing for any of us to brag about. Blue
  21. I get where your coming from and I'm glad you stressed " for me". I contend, for me, my band is just as creative if not more so than most local originals bands.. As a matter of fact I doubt anyone here would catagorize us as a cover band. Blue
  22. No problem with that. Blue
  23. Playing originals to family and friends has no appeal to me at all- nothing against it, it's just not for me. I've left many bars because of bands playing marginal self indulgent originals, even if they're playing them really well, it just grates for some reason. It's all subjective isn't it ? Another broad stroke. If I'm being unreasonable let me know. All cover bands are not the same, all originals bands aren't the same. Blue
  24. Another cover band broad stroke. Opinion & Generalization Blue
