Ouch! Thanks for the information Dave. I'm lucky I live in the MidWest, specifically in the Milwaukee WI region. The fair and festival market here is unbelievable, if a band wants to gig there's more than enough opportunities over here. Daryl

Thanks for the update Pete. Gigging in the UK might have to be removed from my " Bucket List'. Daryl

Pete, Is the fair and festival market that different than it is here in the States? We play more than our fair share of festivals in the summer including Summerfest the World's largest music fest and we don't have that much of a known name. Blue

We only have a name in a very small region of Wisconsin. Blue

What would it take to promote a 6 week Maple Road UK Pub/ festival tour? Blue

I heard about a local Milwaukee WI band traveling out of State to Minnesota for a $35.00 a man gig. Like you say " madness" I do one boat gig a year. It's an hour and a half gig with a great crowd and the $$$ is to good to turn down. Blue

I deal with this as I am the only one in the band that's retired. However I'm not financially independent and I depend on gig money to supplement my tiny pension. I'm lucky that our band is run by our band leader and her husband. They're young smart, and aggressive and can usually smell trouble before it happens. Blue

Myke the same thing happened to us last year. It was a private event, a corporate employee appreciation party. A lot of 21 year old ladies. They hated us. When we took our breaks they talked our sound tech into playing their i Pod through the PA and the dance floor filled up. Not much fun for us. But we took the money. Blue

When we're playing biker bar gigs out in the rural areas I am always concerned when the back drop on the stage is a Confederate Flag. Blue

In my neck of the woods a change in ownership of a pub/ bar is " the kiss of death" and usually means one thing. No more bands. Blue

We dropped one of our regular venues, the hours were not good 9:30-1:30 and the place was in a dangerous area. Blue

I believe it's from an interview I saw on YouTube. Blue

When to turn down gigs. I think it's a worthwhile discussion. Outside of an illness what are some of the reasons we turn down gigs and how we feel about it. Here are a few we're all familiar with. Please comment on each or add other reasons. 1. Not enough money 2. Distance issues 3. Prior bad experience with the venue 4. Scheduling problems. Band members play in other bands. 5. Something doesn't seem right. Blue

True, especially when everything is clicking. The band was good and playing to a nice crowd that's into the band. It makes. That 3 1/2 hours go by fast. We worked hard for that money. Blue

Dave, I played a paid benefit for the Washington County Humane Society thus past Thursday. A reputable organization I was happy to do it. Here in the States you have to be careful with these charities and benefits. Many times they're poorly organized and questionable. I say a "red flag" is when you find out out all other vendors and people providing goods or services are being paid and the only folks unpaid are the bands. Blue

You are not the bad guy. That money was intended for the band. It was your call to donate or not. If I understand the story this is very bad form bordering on theft. Tips are a widely given an accepted here in the States. Last night tips were outstanding. Instead of taking home $200.00, I go home with $230.00. Blue

We played a really nice private event last night at Music and Media in Rockfield WI from 8:30 - 12:00. A 15 minute commute Very intimate setting with a nice engaged crowd. I'm blessed playing with such nice people over the past 9 years. IBlue
