  1. I am not sure having your band seen playing to 3 people in a bar has much value at all other than a paid rehearsal. Blue
  2. Agreed, we want to make ad much money as we can. Blue
  3. There were bars we had to drop. The type of establishments that books bands and has a clientle that has absolutely no interest in any type of live music. And remember we're faced with 4 hours here in the States not 2 hour pub gigs. Blue
  4. I'started gigging in rock bands at age 12 never really stopped. I'm 66, can't wait till this Saturday's gig. I thinks it's different for those of us with no other life interests. Don't get me wrong, all gigs aren't great. You just put on a happy face and don't take it or yourself that serious. A lot of stuff just goes with the territory I love It . Blue
  5. My band has been lucky this summer with high profile big stage 1 hour gigs. They are more lucrative and much easier to manage and overall more fun and exciting. I'm a bar band guy to the core but after 14 years of 4 hour bar band gigs even I see that it's time to be more selective about the gigs we accept and play. Plus I'm 66 , I'm getting old. I don't expect much discussion from this topic but share your thoughts. I'm sure we're not the first band faced with this. Blue
  6. For me, this usually occurs at poorly organized events with low end management and staff. I've been through the same thing many times. Blue
  7. We opened for The Charlie Daniels Band last night. Great crowd, fun gig and we had a blast. When summer is over it's going to be hard going back to bar gigs. Blue
  8. We rarely rehease. We're having a rare rehearsal this week because we're adding 2 songs we haven't played in a while and have challenged us for the gig with The Charlie Daniels Band. Blue
  9. I guess I should have at least looked directly at the camera. I wish I was better at that kind of stuff. Blue
  10. I wanted to add a little contrast to the pic. My smile is awful. Blue
  11. Walking away is not a viable option for some of us. Blue
  12. I think our position on rehearsals, depends on the type of band your in,; 1.Bands that gig consistently 2.Bands that are for fun only and don't gig. 3.Pub/ Bar Bands 4.Bands that tour and do this for a living. Age comes into the picture as well. I certainly don't have the same opinion or position on rehearsals at age 66 that I had at 26. Blue
  13. The Charlie Daniels Band will be performing as THELMA’s Annual Street Concert July 13 at 8 pm! Opening band, Maple Road performs at 6 pm. Concert at 8 pm. Tickets: $10 ($5 for THELMA members) Day of show $15 for all. https://www.thelmaarts.org/event/the-charlie-daniels-band/ I'll let you guys know how it goes this Sunday Blue
  14. Great weather, grreat crowd. It was a good gig. It's so nice when you only have to play an hour. I had a blast! Blue
  15. SUMMERFEST 2019 The world's largest music festival. Wednesday July 3rd ULine Rock Stage 5:00 Maple Road 6:30 No Quarter 8:00 Tom Fuller 10:00 Lover Boy I'll let you guys know how it goes on Thursday. I'm anticipating we'll be playing to a crowd of 2,000. Blue
  16. I saw an ad for a bass player recently indicating they rehearse 3 times a week. Why? Blue
  17. Agreed, this approach would only be for highly paid bands. Blue
  18. Dave, a band would have to be paying me fantastic money to commit to 3 hour rehearsals. Blue
  19. Some band members may have more free time to prepare than other members. For example I'm the only member of my band that's retired. I can prepare all day or all week if I want to. Those with full time traditional jobs/careers may not have that luxury. I think rehearsal requirements should be made clear and agreed on before hiring someone. Blue
  20. If your gigging a lot, play hard ball with members. Don't let anyone show up saying they didn't have time to learn a part or a song. Send out an email to the band saying: "We're cancelling tonight's rehearsal. Blue didn't have time to learn the assigned song " That sends out a message loud and clear. Blue
  21. Thing is, all bands are not democracies. In my band only the band leader would bring in and present new lyrics. If I presented new lyric ideas they would be rejected. I wasn't hired to contribute lyrics. Blue
  22. Agreed, every rehearsal should have a dedicated agenda. I like the idea of dedicated vocal rehearsal . This would be acapella, nailing down specific background and lead vocals. If done right it would only take an hour. You could also dedicate a rehearsal to tightening up and locking down bass and drums. The members would know what songs to work on and arrive prepared. Blue
  23. I'll start. The ability to listen to each others ideas and suggestions. Blue
  24. What is a productive rehearsal? Share your thoughts and ideas regarding how to get the most out of rehearsals. Blue
