  1. I look at this as more of a discussion or exchange of ideas, not a debate. Blue
  2. Not in my area. Functions bands don't gig enough for me. And they usually work for agencies and these booking agencies own the sound & light companies and charge in the area of $700.00- $800.00. So after you pay for sound and lights your left with about $500.00 for the band. Not any more than I'm making now. Plus , I'm 65, most functions band wouldn't grant me an audition. Blue
  3. We're all different. I have always wanted music to become a job. When it became a job for me it actually became more fun. Those that have followed my threads know I'm really into this. There is nothing about my experience that's a chore. Blue
  4. True, 3 gig weekends are unheard of now. 3 gig weekends were not unusual for my band a few years back. We're lucky to have a 2 gig Holloween weekend this year. Another discussion is getting into less gigs but higher paying higher profile gigs. We we're lucky enough to experience a few gigs paying $1, 200.00 for 2 hours with big stage, big lights and sound provided. Very sweet but hard to come by. Pete, just so happens some additional fall gigs came through today. Not great gigs, more of the traditional 4 hour bar gigs. I'm a band guy, a 1 band guy. I never want to be in a position where a band would have to cancel a gig because of my schedule. I think some this depends on the area you work in and remember depping is not a thing in my area or level of play. Daryl
  5. Great point Pete. This is why I ask if members are in other gigging bands. If they are, I wouldn't be a match or good candidate for that band. When I found myself trapped in this business for money it became blessing and a curse. Daryl
  6. If a band is going to net me an extra $600.00- $700 00 a month,I'll learn a sh#@ load of songs. Blue
  7. I always ask how many paid gigs have you played in the last 6 months. Ideally I'm looking for 3 gigs per week. Blue
  8. We just changed the hours on one of our Holloween gigs due to big Green Bay Packers game . Naturally we caught the conflict, not the owners. Blue
  9. In my area most bands are honest about gigging. " We'll play out when we want to" " If your looking for money, this ain't it" " No money hounds" " We gig about 6 times a year" Blue
  10. I have a buddy like that. He plays guitar and he wants to find a couple of guys to jam with once in a while. He has never gigged and has no interest in gigging. Blue
  11. I haven't watched the video yet, however I remember Disco taking a hard wack at Rock & Roll. Blue
  12. Agreed, but what about the other side of the coin. The guy that joins the band that rehearses 3 times a week, but finds there's no touring, no recording and no fesitivals , no gigs. Blue
  13. Signed and touring are good reasons IMO for rehearsing 3 times a week. Blue
  14. If your requirements are commitment to the music, creativity and openness to ideas you should be fine However if your looking for gigs this opportunity might be tough. Blue
  15. Or it's a band that fell apart and they're really starting over. Blue
  16. Practice twice a week is usually a "red flag" unless the focus is a "for fun only" band and they want to have fun twice a week or it's a "start up" project. Other than that I can't see why there would be a need to practice twice a week. Blue
  17. Agreed "Walk This Way " could be tough. It certainly would be challenging for me. The other members work have to be able to nail their parts. It's a very fast song and it's hard to hear exactly what the bass player is doing. I would need. YouTube bass tutorial for " Walk This Way" Blue
  18. Is this band going to provide you with whatever your looking for in a band? The singer not participating in the audition is a red flag there could be other problems within the band. Blue
  19. Disagree? I agree with all those points. Blue
  20. Cool, We have a private event next weekend. It's money so I'll make the best of it. However I think it's one of those scenarios where the host is a huge fan of the band, usually the guests are not. I guess I shouldn't say not a fan of the band. Not a fan of live rock music at a party. Daryl
  21. Pete, 100 people in a pub sounds good to me.Especially after last weekend when we had 10. Daryl
  22. No life for me after gigging. Started gigging at 12 now at 65 gigging more than ever. Having a blast I love it. I become depressed when I have a weekend without a gig. I have life long friends that challenge me and ask why I'm still doing this It's like their talking in a foreign language. Why would I stop? It's like telling me; 'You know, you should really think about stopping having fun." Blue
  23. Huge decline in the appreciation of live music at the local level. Blue
  24. I think us seniors have to accept the fact a lot of gigging protocol we grew up with are no longer relevant. Blue
  25. This is great advice for new bass players interested in adding legs to their bass Blue
