It's happened again to me again this week. I'm more offended than ever tho. Its for a large festival, plenty of stages. We done a fair few 'benefit' gigs for them over the last 12 months, handing them several thousands of pounds. Its getting a bit close to the festival now, so we asked about our slot (which has obv been discussed throughout this whole process) and it seems they have completely forgotten us. They have offered to fit us in on the shittest stage (mainly spoken word poetry - we're a full on 5 piece punk band) for 30 mins. On the proviso we leave our gear there for everyone to use. Its almost comical how often this is happening to us. But TBH just felt so offended by this one.
I don't see how she can possibly complain about it. A cabinet is a cabinet, surely..?
She barely notices nowadays...

The worst bit about TINY crowds is that half of them are usually made up of the other bands. Meaning at least 50% of the audience are musicians...watching your every move...

My missus entrusted me to "Get a cabinet for the hallway" The look on her face as I wheeled the 4x10 in....

Yeah, I'm about 80-90%. Then if I have a solo coming up, or the guitarist gets a bit cocky I can dial myself up a bit!

Had to Streetview it to see what all the fuss was about...
How have you found the sound from the go pro for clarity, I'm only listening on a iPad so can't really tell
Its actually OK. I mean it's not Abbey Road quality, But... If you leave the waterproof case on it, it nicely reduces all of the clipping you get with 99% of live recordings! For what it is... its ace.

Isn't it just a polite way of saying "You're playing out of time"? Like the way I sing "Just off pitch"....

My band Von Nitros performing 'Vile' Live - GoPro on the monitor at the front & a camera resting on my amp behind me. Ahh... We've played one or two of these in our time! The last time we were setting up & testing our gear, probably about 1/4 volume of gigging volume. The Landlords first words were "You're too loud. You'll have to turn down later, the football is on at the same time as you are" No "You find the plugs alight?" "Can I grab you lads a drink?" So we play twice our usual volume. Most people are having fun...especially us Halfway through the first set we have a song called "Barking up the wrong tree" Our singer promptly gets on all fours, starts barking, and scuttles into the now quite rowdy crowd. Into the darkness, and we lose sight of him. His mic goes silent, the barking stops... We look at each other confused, but keep playing. After an eternity (8 mins?) he arrives back on stage, torn T-shirt, profusely sweating, mumbling about the landlord... You've all got to do it once right?.

The gig: I reckon the number of gigs I've done with this mixed genre set up is well into the three figures. Everyone single one a unique shambles. Just seems how a lot of gigs work for a grass roots band (i.e. your first gig together). It's the nature of the beast. I know a lot of people here are paid musicians, and expect a level of professionalism beyond what is being offered to you. But as a first gig - do it. It's a free rehearsal. One badly put together night will teach you more about gigging than 1,000 professional shows. even down to things like which order you load in, do you all perform better if you all eat together as a band after soundcheck? Never eat in the same venue that you're playing. Gear Sharing: No. There is an etiquette that the headlining band supplies Cabs / kit etc. but this is asked for, not an assumption. Totally up to you. I've done it once. Had my gear totally blown once. So 100% bad experience ratio. The other bands will all have small combos anyway, so will be excited to use your whole rig anyway. I say do it, but no gear sharing.

Funny things that people say to you at gigs

Recently: "I'm guessing the drummer is one of your Dads?" Chances of us letting him live that down? Nil. -
Me: "Doctor, I think I'm going deaf" Doc: "What are the symptoms?" Me: "They're a fictional cartoon family, but that's not important right now" I was pleasantly surprised how well I done at that test, I wonder why 1k was by far my weakest frequency?!

We've had some places so dire you wouldn't believe. We let our drummer sort us out a room once. It was on this lock up on a traveller encampment. There was someone (and a rabbit) living in there the whole time. Patched electricity from a pole, etc. Anyway it transpired that someone had been kidnapped and tortured in the very lock up next door - while we were actually there! We never went back after that. But my Dad got to say "Poor f**ker really was being tortured if he had to listen to you lot"

Cheers guys, some really interesting answers. We've upped our usual 'pub' fee slightly, due to it being in London, and the extra theatrics that we'll put on, but we've proposed a figure very similar to our normal fee.
-
There will be a massive ticket revenue (Hundreds of thousands)... But that because it's a sporting event...we just happen to be providing some end-of-show entertainment, So I don't think we can work on a percentage! There is just something that feels a little odd charging the same rate for 10,000 punters as we do for 50!
Do you lower your fee if there's only the bar staff, two old gents playing dominoes and a dog..?
We don't.... (Although we've been stung and seen other bands stung A LOT by a landlord saying "Oh it wasn't as busy as I'd hoped. I can only give you half" etc.)
-
We have been asked to play at a large event - with a large number of paying guests. My question is this - Would you up your fee because you know you will be playing to significantly more people than you usually would?

Recorded on a GoPro on the side of the stage, so it's the on-stage sound. Oh I've kept it short too, no one watches YouTube clips over a minute any more. First time we'd ever played it too, eek! http://youtu.be/PXip4a78A0Q

Absolutely awesome! We played The Portland in Cambridge, the ticket price had been set at £10 (not by us) which we all thought was a bit much for a pub gig. We assumed it would be dead, so we chucked in 4 brand new songs into a 9 song set. Then 120 paying punters rolled in! Fantastic night all round! Here is one of our never before played songs! Eek! My only prob with it is the size of it at the base. It's pretty much the footprint of a washing machine, nearly twice as deep as a lot of cabs. With the sizes of stage I play on, a few inches makes a lot of difference (snigger).

How you finding the music scene/gigs where you are?
urbanx replied to ellie's topic in General Discussion
It's pretty dire here in Cambridge. 7 Years ago we had:

The Barfly
The Man on The Moon
The Haymakers
The Corner House
The Boat Race
The Portland Arms
(This ignores the larger venues like CornEx (2,000 cap) and the Junction (1,000 Cap) That most bands cant afford to book) Six venues all putting on 3/4 bands a night, EVERY night. Giving the city around 200 bands slots a week. Four of those venues have now closed, leaving us with The Cornerhouse and The Portland. While they both have pros and cons, I think it's pretty pathetic of our 'creative' city of 150,000 people to have just two pubs for bands. So yeah, pretty dire out here for an originals band... -
