I need to give it more time - not finding this to be anything like their best effort, which is disappointing.

The tyres analogy is, with respect, utter rowlocks. Cheap strings aren't going to endanger anyone, won't affect your stopping distance or lead to unpredictable handling at the limit. Buy the strings that suit you best - cheap expensive or whatever it's up to you.

This thread is very interesting. I have a bass with a twisted neck - it's not supposed to be but it plays fine so I don't worry about it!

I play almost exclusively fingerstyle, but when I do use a pick I like the Dava Nylon Control as you can vary the stiffness according to where your fingers are.

The difference is bigger the closer to the nut you get. If I back to back my two fretted 5-strings with 34" and 35" scale it is noticeable but only takes a short time to adjust.

My first band was called Defiants (although there was a strong leaning towards ETA - Eat the Afterbirth!) doing thrash covers and speeded up rock classics. I was involved with a group called Slightly Miffed after that, but not doing bass. Other groups were Maternoster, The Flesh Gods, Textured Air and Lowered Tones. A couple of mates and I formed The Baker Street Irregulars for a brief moment until one of them sodded off to Ireland - the git!

Have an experiment! There are loads of different sounds to be had.

I can range from a soft stroke to a full on spank, and vary from right at the base of the neck to down by the bridge depending on what sound I am looking for.

I hate the sound my fingernails make, so keep mine as short as possible and manicured smooth on my plucking fingers.

Likewise, Mk1 XR2, 205 GTi, and an S14 200SX would have been nice to keep hold of.

I consider myself something of an authority on the subject!

I think we need a new poll, about scones. It needs three options though as you haven't mentioned the correct way!
