It's called setting the mood isn't it? Seems a bit of a daft move not to do it, frankly.

If he was stood right near the back he may have been getting a standing wave of bass making it twice as loud. Maybe next time suggest they move about a bit?

To give a less alarmist view... Check the back of the amplifier - my Hartke HA3500 is easily changed between the two voltages.

I reckon it's just the camera angle, you can see the bass is not square on in the photo.
