Do you need to play rock with a pick?
Urban Bassman replied to XxBassMastaXx's topic in Introductions
Perhaps you should ask Geddy Lee....or John Entwistle (if he were still alive)...or John Paul Jones...or Andy Frazer...or Neil Murray...or hundreds of others. Be you own bass player...if it's fingers for you then fingers it is!
Is this true? Cos im comfotable with finger style.
-
I got an ebony one for my P Bass, nice finish, great fit. Recomended ++1
Ordered a Ebony thumbrest from the guy below on monday, it arrived today (wednesday) and is a really nice part. Time to junk those nasty plastic ones and be good to your bass! http://www.bassguitarthumbrests.com/ Jez

I loved my rack. Sold it yesterday and bought a RH450 Rebelhead
Good man - great amp. Get the floor controller if you can, it's worth it!
I loved Squire from Yes and Time and A Word right up to Drama but went elsewhere after that. I love his sound in all its guises but, more importantly, I love his pure creativity. He doesn't sound like anyone else at all and his playing is almost entirely unique. And all with e plectrum! Yes could not be Yes without him. He is one of the greatest British bass players in our history.
+1 to that!

All the advise is useful (I don't have a tascam gadget myself ) but all the stuff is the only way. I also find that listening to the song on different players helps..sounds strange but your car's CD player will bring out different frequencies than your computers speakers will or your home hi fi, Ipod etc. Quite often you'll be struggling to hear what's going on but then you listen to it again somewhere else and there it is. How often have you had the "I never heard that before" experience....Probably because you never heard it on that particular hi fi before. I have a really crappy portable CD player, it has virtually no bass response at all. But that's great because once I've learnt the song I can use that to play along with and you're not competing against the existing bass line - bass karaoke if you like. Keep at it, it'll come.

Ah.... 1961 what a fab year that was. Sounds like my life story too! Welcome
I have been meaning to register for some time now, 48, played in my teens rediscovered bass a couple of years ago and love it.

I use a CEB-3. does exactly what it says on the tin.... nuff sed

I had a Status Series 2 for a while (wish I still had it in fact ).....But I can safely say it was the nicest neck I ever put my mits on... Rob does some great things with graphite, so I'd go for it.
I have a 70s Precision Fretless that I don't play and (for various strange reasons) cannot get rid of or trade. In the interests of getting some use out of it I was going to swap the fretless neck for a fretted one. I have been eyeing up the Status graphite replacement necks but have never actually played one. Not a trivial investment cash wise, however. Any experiences, thoughts or alternative suggestions much appreciated.
That's lovely. I think about basses every day. Would like to get a '61 Jazz to go with my P Bass... one day...maybe...perhaps... Here's mine, in a similar pose! - however the "relic-ing" has been done over 48 years. Help with my rig (all advice appreciated)
Urban Bassman replied to neptunehealer's topic in Amps and Cabs
Yes i agree, i am toying with just getting a 1x15 to crank it up to 4 ohms and get 200 watts live. But i am thinking maybe if i get a more powerfull head then start changing things around is the best and least annoying option. Wouldn't want to get a new cab then still not being happy with the power output and clarity. I hear good things about GK so i may roll with these. Whats the deal with adding a 1x15 do they have a volume control on them, how would i connect it to my 4x10? My 4x10 has 2 cable inputs on the back which are already used to go into the back of my head?
Like You I had a peavy amp for my first gigging rig - it was an old MKIII driving a 2 x10 & 1 x 15 cab. Not bad but then the amp died, so my next rig was a GK700 and a GK 410RBH...believe me this was plenty loud enough and because the 700 is a bi amp you have complete control of your highs, mids and lows and the 4 x 10 goes very low...no problems with Low Bs or Drop Ds. However if 15's are your thing then GK naturally do a 15" verson. I chose a 4 ohm cab so that I could the full power from the amp - if I wanted, and if you are only planning to have one cab I suggest that you consider this. Don't be tempted by the lower price GK Backline cabs they are still good but you can't use the biamp feature on the GK700. My GK rig served me well for a number of years until my advancing years meant that my back no longer cope with the weight of the cab...but if you young and healthy - I'd go for it! Good luck! -
How may Basses do we own collectively on Basschat?
I personally cannot believe some of the QC problems Ive heard about recently...its digusting! Lovely looking bases, never played one though. I did have Rick gas...but...after seeing the price, I was put off. At that price, you could get a decent Sadowsky, or nearly 2 USA Fenders. Or...put it towards a custom. £1600 plus or whatever they are is ridiculous.
I owned a MG 4003 for several years and never had any problems with it, QC or otherwise. Sold it to help pay for my 61P otherwise I would still have it. Yes RIC are trading on their heritage (a bit) and yes you either love them (warts and all) or loath them, personally I think they sound good and look great. Here a little pic of me playing mine. If you decide that it's the bass for you, then who cares what everyone else thinks, make it your own!

I used to have a Line6 POD XT Live (Bass) as it had a built-in tuner and more effects and amp sounds that you could shake a stick at...However I found that gradually I ended up with one amp sound that I liked and just used one or two of the effects...flanger/chorus types. I recently changed my rig to a TC Electronics Rebel 450 Head plus a couple of TC cabs. The Rebel has a built-in tuner plus three presets for the amp (EQ, channel volume, Compressor and valve emulation) which you can control with their optional foot controller that has the tuner as well. So I put the foot controller on an pedalboard (Pedal Train) and added a Boss Chorus and dusted of my old DOD Flanger and bingo! all the sounds I'll ever need from two stomp boxes and a rather clever amp. I then sold my POD XT. I play in a rock covers band and I find that unless you are playing something with a very distinctive bass sound, eg heavy distortion or chorus-type effect, then find a tone that does it for you for the majority of the songs and stick in one or two effects as needed for the rest, simple is best. However for it's flexibilty and the sheer number of permutations I would suggest the XT Live if that's where you wanted to go. Personally, I've never had anyone come up to me after a gig and said "on that song your bass sounded wrong"...had quite a few complementing my tone though, which is what it's all about in the end innit! Hope that helps.
Playing in a covers band I have generally tried to reproduce the sound of the original track rather than develop anything of my own. I started with cheap chorus and OD pedals, which I don't use much but consider essential for the tracks I do use them on. Now I find that I want different OD settings for songs in the same set, and fiddling around with knobs between tracks in a live performance doesn't appeal! Looking on here for advice I was surprised to find several postings suggesting that if you were in a covers band you didn't need any effects - to me it seems to be the other way round, unless you're representing the song wholly in your own (new) way. Experience of live guitar work led me to go for singles rather than a multi because there were always too many buttons and knobs to remember to tweak to change settings (even if stored in a patch list!). So please can anyone recommend an ME processor that is live-play friendly? or should I just bin the idea of effects altogether?
Fanks, wouldn't dream of doing anything to spoil such a beauty.
Paint stripper hot gun and a chisel and that would off in seconds!!! Of course I would have to come round and kill you for spoiling the best looking Ray I've seen in a long time! BB
It sure is...luckily I like the scratchplate!
that could be messy - iirc they're glued on the 20th,not fixed with screws.
Thought I'd share these with you. Had the 20th Anniversary for a while now and I wouldn't be without it. Got the 2007 LE today and I'm loving it. Got a gig on Friday and I'll be going double handed! Can't wait! Enjoy Had a request for some alternative views so here they are: That should keep you all drooling for a while

Not so far. Just make sure that when to fix the velcro to the underside of the pedal or to the pedal that the surface is clean, grease free and as flat as possible to make sure that the self adheasive on the velcro ahs the best chance of sticking. Otherwise the velcro adhesion to itself is very good.
Thanks for the feedback. Have you ever had problems with the pedals coming off the velcro on the board in transit? Mark
I use a pedal train jr and I think that they are really excellent pieces of kit. Very simple no frills, you've got space underneath to fit your power supply and enough space between the metal slats to route power cables and signal chain. Looked at others and felt this was the best for me. Only have a TC Electronics foot controller (for my Rebel 450 Head), a Boss Bass Chorus and an old DOD bass Flanger and a power supply I bought from Maplins - it all fits and goes in the bag the board came in - Easy. No it's not for sale though Hope that helps John
Anyone used these and got any feedback good or bad? Also would look to buy the Pedaltrain JR if anyone is looking to shift one on. Thanks Mark
Oh yes the 2 x 12 is bigger front to back but they have the same width as the 2 x 10 so that they stack neatly together.
Are those two different drivers in each cab? Especially in the 2x10.
Yep took the plunge and got one along with a 2 x 10 and 2 x 12 cab. Done a couple of gigs and a number of rehearsal and so far so FAB! Worth getting the foot controller as well IMHO. Still tweaking the sounds but I'm well pleased. Light weight and a doddle to use. Here's a pic.
