I’m really excited to hear your pickups and filter preamp. Good work

My list is relatively short. I still have my Squier P with a Seymour Duncan pickup. Actually my first bass. It sounds great and I love the neck shape. Harlay Benton Fretless Jazz copy. Nice bass to mess around and feel like Jaco or Pino. Weights like about a metric ton but sounds really good. G&L L2000 tribute. It’s a ok bass. It has a dead preamp and at some point I might throw a east uni 3k preamp in it. Never liked the preamp to begin with. Now what I sold. Squier Jazz Bass Vintage modified. Great sound Jazz Bass but was heavy because it had a maple neck and body. A bit strange however it sounded terrific. Status S3000. What a great bass. I really loved the headless design. The original preamp was a bit strange to work with. It had the 80s Mark king sound baked in. I sold it because I didn’t like the preamp anymore and didn’t wanted to mod a +30 year old bass. Alembic Essence 5. I stupidly sold it when I needed some cash. I liked the sound and the filter preamp. But it was so flipping heavy and the neck dive was real bad. Bogart Blackstone 4. I bought one used for a good price. But rather quickly I found out that graphite neck was more sensible to temperature changes then any of my woods neck basses and it didn’t really sound that good actually. So I sold it quickly I had some more basses like Ibanez EhB and Fender Mim Jazz but these I returned quickly to shops I bought them.

Your build looks great! Really happy for you. Alan does some really nice work and is a really nice person ( I’ve talked with him at two London Bass shows). Ever other day I’m toying with the idea of ordering some custom build from Alan. Unfortunately because of brexit I just can’t do it. The customs fees/ tax’s are so much here in Germany. Maybe someday😭

I usually have the bridge pickups wide open and the neck Pickup a little less open. This gives me the more mid forward sound like the BB had for example.

I have to listen again with headphones but I heard a very small difference with in the mid range, at least I think I heard that 😅. The Jazz Bass had that classical mid scoop with both pickups wide open and the BB didn’t have that. (But take my opinion with a grain of salt since I’ve got my Fender mim Jazz Bass last week and I haven’t played a different bass since then. )

On my Passive Fender Jazz Bass(VVT) you can hear the difference when the pickups are both fully open or when one is backed up a tinny bit. I personally like the scooped sound and especially the sound with the neck Pickup backed up slightly.

And tone wise my guess is that a one piece or a 2-3 piece laminated neck adds more to the overall sound, than a neck with like 6-8 piece with several different kind of timbers. Mixing two or tree different kinds of woods can work lovely, but anything more doesn’t really add to the sound. It may is nice to look at and sure it’s good for the stability but that’s it. But that’s just how I see it and probably is a bit of a “hot take”.

I once had a bass with a Graphite neck and the neck moved reacted a lot to temperature changes. Opening the window on a cold day for a few minutes was enough for it to move. However my old Squier P doesn’t really care for temperature changes. I only touch the trust rod when changing setups and that is every other year. I’ve never had much trouble with my wooden necks moving much or at all.

This way it’s still not really worth the hassle with the tax and so on. It had to be something special that I could only get there.

I’d love have Shop like Bass Direct or Bass Gallery in mainland Europe. Because german custom wants something like 30% tax on imported stuff and that hurts my wallet a lot.

Well...... i guess I’m sorta guilty of having one or two Bass more then I’d probably should. I have one Squier P with a Seymour Duncan pickup/ cheap Jazz fretless/ import L2000 with a dead preamp/ Ibanez EHB1005ms. The EHB does the main stuff, the P was my first bass( that’s going nowhere) and fretless it’s just mess around. Never done any real gigging because I’m that sorta blocke that is working when other are gigging.

I just got this Ibanez EHB1005MS in Black. That’s one hell of a great bass. Probably one or the best I’ve ever played and I played some stupid expensive stuff. I really enjoy the feel of Neck, the light weight and the amazing Sound. The multi scale is great. It’s effortless and it just makes sense once you played one. One of my of the best B strings I’ve played.

I’ve got myself the Ibanez EHB1005MS as a first 5 string Bass. I wouldn’t say it’s the cheapest option but it’s a amazing Bass and the B is amazing.

Well because of Brexit I probably won’t be shopping there unless I find/ need something specific from there. But that won’t stop me from window shopping on the website(especially the used section).
