  1. Beautiful basses, really resonant and easy to play!

I had a Tobias Classic 5 in the 1990s and it was such a great sounding and great looking bass.

IIRC, the string spacing on these models was 17.5 mm at the bridge, but it was a long time ago and my memory isn't quite what it was... 😬😁

    Anyway, GLWTS 👍😊

    Hi everyone,

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all of you who have supported the site this year—whether by becoming a Supporting Member or purchasing tokens for the marketplace.

Your contributions enable us to keep improving the site, reduce our reliance on advertising, and dedicate time to supporting our community.

I mention this now because December typically sees a noticeable drop in revenue, and with the challenges many individuals and businesses are facing right now, I’m especially grateful to those of you who continue to renew your subscriptions. Of course, I also deeply appreciate everyone who visits the site, shares their knowledge, and offers support to others. A site like BC is only as valuable as the knowledge contained within the membership.

So, thank you once again. I’ll be taking a bit of a BC break over Christmas and New Year, so I want to wish you all a relaxing, joyful time with your friends, family, and instruments 🎸.

    Cheers,

    Ped

    Thanks Ped,

Wishing you and all the Mods here a fab Xmas and very Best Wishes for 2025! 😊🎄🤶🍾

Basschat is very much like home, or a second home, as others have said here and I sometimes have to remind myself just how fortunate we all are to have such a safe, welcoming and inclusive place to share our passion for all things bass!

Many's the time I wished that there was something like the Basschat community around when I first started playing bass in the 1970s...

But hey, it's been a blast this last 18, 19 years or so ( has it really been that long! 😮) and I'm sure all of us here wouldn't have it any other way... Thank you 🙏

    Enjoy your Xmas folks! 😊

@vmaxblues  I bought Stuart's Trace Elliot Elf head from him and it arrived in immaculate condition in the original packaging with all of the bits and pieces it needed.  A very nice man to do business with - I highly recommend him.

This pretty much describes my recent experience with @vmaxblues, aka Stuart, when buying his Warwick Gnome amp last week...

... which arrived safe and sound yesterday, just in time for Xmas. 😁

A long-standing Basschatter, Stuart's reputation on here is second to none and he's always been a pleasure to deal with.

    Highly recommend, as said above!

Thanks again Stuart - a very Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to you, and best wishes for 2025! 🙏🎄🎅😊

Nik bought my Protection Racket case in a very straightforward transaction. Shame we didn't get to meet but I handed the case over to his personal courier (son) who was a fine representative for the family brand.

    All the best Nik!

    Thanks Ed,

    "... the family brand."

That really made me chuckle.. 😁

  5. Had the pleasure of meeting @ratman, aka Alex, yesterday and after about an hour of brilliant music and all things bass conversation, I came away with a very good sounding and very tidy Eden 112 cab.

One of the great things about meeting fellow Basschaters is that you never know what you might learn or discover, but you can be certain there'll always be something over and above just buying /selling bass gear.  And yesterday was no exception to that. ..

    So, I discovered that..

A CIJ Fender Mustang is a thing of beauty, Helix pedals are pretty awesome things and that both Alex and I have a Adam and The Ants connection through our musical networks...

Small basses, small FX pedals, and small world it would seem, Alex! 😁

Also found out that Alex is North London's unofficial Dog Whisperer - I had Millie, our 7 year old Cockerpoo with me, and she and Alex are now 'besties', for sure.

So, deal with Alex in complete confidence Folks - he really knows his stuff, is a great bloke and a real credit to this forum.

Thanks again, Alex, and here's to the next time! 👍😊

    Nik

    P. S. Hope you had a good gig last night...

Mmm, I like the sentiment but disagree with it being 'wrong' Nik. Creativity is sparked by emotion, and emotion is sparked by both positive and negative events. I think back through the history of music and I see diss tracks everywhere, at least tracks in which an artist has a transparent pop at another person quite openly. Possibly the most famous is 'You're So Vain' by Carly Simon (poor old Warren Beatty), but Neil Young v Lynyrd Skynyrd in the Alabama/Sweet Home Alabama debate, there's Silly Love Songs by Macca that was a direct response to a line in a Lennon track (and apparently Lennon & McCartney were at it a lot in relation to each other in their post-Beatles repertoire). Morrissey and Pet Shop Boys weren't averse to the occasional dig either.

I've just read this book and it makes it very clear that the verbal/lyrical competition between sound systems in Jamaica and UK was a key player in the development of reggae.

    image.thumb.png.52201c6f395e34d412d38df75249629b.png

In short, it's use in rap/hip-hop is not new, in fact it's just normal human expression via music, and if it helped Lennon & McCartney, Neil Young, and reggae, I'm fine with it 👍

I get that Chris and its not that diss tracks, or their earlier equivalents, are wrong per se, I'm just saying that I personally don't like all that stuff...

My use of the word 'wrong' was in a different context, i.e., I think it's wrong that artists are more interested in spending their time squabbling with each other so publicly, instead of doing something more productive with the leverage / public platform they both have...for example, taking on Spotify who are ripping off so many musicians and content creators.

    Just my idealistic 2p worth...

I have my own theory as to the why and the what here but it potentially sets an interesting precedent?

    Hi Chris,

I don't know about the legal ramifications of this and it's potential long-term impact on the music business, but the very fact that there's such a thing as 'diss tracks' in this world makes me despair at the state we're in.

Compare and contrast The Beatles and Brian Wilson spurring each other on to make even greater music back in the 60s, to this pair of overrated, under-talented (if there is such a word) ego-fuelled twats!

Instead of arguing about how big their reproductive organs are, they should be working together to take on monolithic record companies and Spotify to get fairer deals for all music creators.

This sums up just about everything that's wrong with today's music industry and some of the artists that exist in it....

Anyone out there who's looking for a 70's Precision without paying Fender prices, do yourself a favour and buy this. It's Yamaha (say no more), but also built like a tank, playable, toneful, and lovely to look at 👍

    +1 to that, Chris...

I had the pleasure of meeting David at the weekend and having a play on this gorgeous Yamaha bass of his.

The neck is absolutely stunning - straight and true, and a joy to play on.

What's more, the bass sounds lovely too... Especially so because it's got a passive tone control that does what it's supposed to; you can get a nice bright and clear tone (think of the opening to The Eagles 'One of these Nights'), right through to that phat, rounded Motown tone with just a quick twist of the tone knob. Gorgeous!

But the thing that surprised me most about this bass is how lightweight it is - which is quite something for an Ash body..

Anyway, suffice to say, it's an absolute bargain as you said Chris.

Proper 'old skool' P Bass goodness and quality, for not much money at all when compared to vintage Fenders of the same era.

    GLWTS David 👍😊

He's a love him or hat (geddit) him kinda guy and I f*****g love him (and his music). His shows in the 90's were extraordinary, especially those with SZ on bass 👍

I definitely 'hat' him and his music, Chris.. 😁

Just when I thought 2024 couldn't get any worse.... 🤦🤦

Thanks mate! And yes, I'm OK all things considered,

Tbh, I felt crap for the first 24/36 hours, but am relatively OK now.

Just a tad peed off I have to miss this gig and family occasion...

Hope things are going well for you now in terms of getting the Travis home environment right for your daughter and her needs.. 🙏

  11. Hi Folks,

I was due to go and see the amazing Meshell Ndegeocello live at The KoKo in London's trendy Camden Town this Friday, 15th November, with my son and daughter, but I've come down with Covid, so now can't go.

As gutted as I am to be missing out on seeing an amazing musician & singer/songwriter, I'm even more gutted not to be able share the experience with my kids - one of whom lives in Sweden - so these opportunities for family time don't come up too often for us..

Which led me to thinking about family, and the recent Basschat Fundraiser in aid of @AndyTravis and his family.

So with that in mind, would anyone here like to buy my ticket for the gig on Friday for say, £25...?

But instead of paying me, just make a donation to the Just Giving page here (link below) to help Andy and his family:

    https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/mark-clark-3

I reaise it's very short notice between now and Friday and, Mods, I'm not sure if this kind of post is even allowed..

But I figured it be a crying shame to waste my £45+ ticket to see one of the world's most innovative bass players, whilst there's a plethora of London-based bass players - with very generous hearts - right here in this Basschat family!

    Right? Right.... 😁

More info here about the gig:

    And Meshell:

And here's half a screenshot of the QR code from my e-ticket, which I will forward onto whoever is interested and able to on Friday, and who'd like to make a donation to a very worthy cause.

Ticket will be 'sold' on a first come, first served basis.

Thanks for reading and for being the wonderful Basschat Community/family that you are... 😊

    Cheers

I may have missed it, but what's the wattage on this? I use an 8ohm 4x10 so not sure if this would have enough volume.

Whatever the Mesa tech spec says, these are very loud amps and even coupled with a 410 that's 8 ohms (not 4 ohms) , it will give you more than enough 'oomph' to keep up with most gigging situations..

I have the Walkabout 15 combo, and I use it for almost all my gigs - whichever band, band line up etc - it's so versatile!

  13. Wow. Basschat Community - just WOW!!! 👏👏👏

@Clarky- what a wonderful idea and well done to everyone who's donated to support this cause! Hearts of gold you have, every single one of you..

I've only really just caught up with this thread after the weekend, but will most definitely be donating today..

And @AndyTravis - wishing you, Iris and your family the very best of luck with everything! 😊👍🙏
