I've always assumed that when people describe the neck on a bass they're selling as 'straight', they mean that the truss rod has been adjusted to provide the absolute bare minimum of relief because they like a very low action on a bass. I've certainly bought basses on here that have been set up that way and it's always the first thing I change. Nothing wrong with it of course, but I've always preferred a higher action, which inevitably requires more relief in the neck. Variety is the spice of life, as they say.

I started playing with fingers when I was 14 and was learning the bass , but by the time I got into my first band, punk was happening and Andy Warren (bass player with the early Adam and The Ants band) had an amazing sound playing a Ricky 4001 with a pick, so that's what got me using a pick. After that, Leigh Gorman's amazing playing style - also using a pick - heavily influenced me. Over the years, I switched to using fingers as the styles of music I was playing at the time changed , but I'm so glad that I developed a good pick technique early on because it's been so useful - especially in covers bands where the bass lines you have to play may have been recorded on synths. There's no right or wrong way to play IMO ; I just use the style that suits the song and the version of it that I happen to be doing at the time.

Hi Folks I've just decided to venture into the DAW world and have an 2010 iMac with El Capitan as the OS, and which has Garageband on it. So far so good, and as a next step, I've bought a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB here on BC to use with it.. Having downloaded the drivers for it, it seems to be working, the lights are on etc, etc..and I can hear my bass when it's plugged into it via a pair of headphones. But no matter what I do, I can't get Garageband to recognise the signal from my bass, even though I think I've set up the relevant settings in Garageband in order for that to happen. Has anyone got any useful tips/advice on what i need to do to make this work?? Thanks Nik

An 8 string bass at the Bash would be great -
Sensible man. I assume it's an old USA one?
It's kind of a hybrid USA/Japanese model I think, or a very early NJ series one. I say that because although it's not the exotic custom one with all the fancy active electronics, it has some features such as the through neck that weren't on the later NJ series. Whatever it is, it's still the bass I would call my 'go to' bass for gigs, rehearsals or any very occasional recording.

Looking good Folks Need to give this another BUMP though to keep the momentum up.. -
I've sold every bass that I resolutely said Id never sell. Except my BC Rich Eagle. But I'm not going to say it, in case I jinx it! I do still also have the Hondo Ricky copy my mum bought me when I was 17 and it currently adorns one of the walls in my son's bedroom.
Better get my name on the list, this looks like a good one !
It'll be great to see you there Mike! -
Yep, I think the solution is fairly simple. You've tried a range of amps and not liked the sound of any of them. It must be either the bass or the speakers. Maybe head for the next Bass Bash in your area, or just networking with a few basschatters up there if you can't find a good shop?
Good idea; there's always lots of gear available at most Bashes and what's even better, there's other bass players who can help and advise you in person..
Sad sad times, whatever the outcome to his demise (let's not get all tabloid speculating eh!!) a truly massive loss to the industry and a massive personal loss to his family, friends and fans! Life is short, live it!!! RIP Prince :-(
Well said!
He had ankle problems too, according to the Mail. He did have hip surgery but presumably not to an extent that would have required a transfusion. He must have been in a huge amount of pain and yet he still pushed himself. It sounds all too familiar given the road Michael Jackson went down with his own health issues and painkillers. BTW: Card carrying Prince fanatic here. Not for his stadium concerts which are relatively structured but for very much the less formal, improvised stuff that was seen at after show parties and (unfortunately) on bootlegs. A taste of it is on the Live at Aladdin and Y2K DVD's. Seeing him at the Indigo in 2007 after the main concert was life changing. He was arranging songs on the fly in his head while performing them at the same time and cueing the rest of the band. At one point he went around to the keyboardist and showed him how to play a specific phrase, then jumped on the drums...it was jaw dropping and awe inspiring in every sense of the word. He totally owned that stage and the 1300 of us in the audience.
Interesting post Steve; given what you've said about the ankle problems as well as the hip problems, then it's more understandable as to why his last tour was just him sat a a piano. My best mate was also at one of those after-show Indigo gigs and also said it was unbelievable!

I've got a lot of Prince's albums from his early to mid career, late 70s to late 1990s, but I don't have so many from his later career, say from 2000 onwards... Of those I have, my favourite as a purely amazing, exciting pop record is 'Purple Rain, but I think his most artistically ambitious and creative album is Sign 'O The Times. Thought I'd offer up these songs as some from the albums I've got that are incredible, but which don't get much of a mention: "Take Me With U" from Purple Rain "Condition of The Heart" from Around The World In A Day "Do U Lie" from Parade "Dance On" from Lovesexy "Rockhard in a Funky Place" from the 1987 Black Album "Strollin' " from Diamonds & Pearls "Guitar" from Planet Earth There's loads of others, but these ones have always stood out for me.. Sorry - not sure if there are YouTube clips for them or not.
I am good. It has been a long time Nik. I don't spend much time in BC nowadays. My 15 + years of trying to play in a reliable and enjoyable band became shipwrecked on the rocks of ego and a local dearth of singers I still have too many basses and occasionally I enjoy a dabble but I think that's probably it. I've remarried to someone very special and life, excepting an errant 15 yr old stepson, is very good.
Pleased to hear that very positive news in your personal life, Peter; same thing for me too! I do play regularly in a band though, which helps keep me out of trouble.. Surprised this beautiful bass is still here, to be honest - it looks like such a wonderful example?
