'83 Wal Mk 1 for under £2,000 anyone? **SOLD**
silverfoxnik replied to Beedster's topic in Basses For Sale
Nik, that's really kind of you mate. Bottom line is that BC gives us all the opportunity to try, own, and trade in gear that otherwise many of us would never have had the chance to own, and whilst I buy and sell a lot, it's always with that in mind. If I have good gear, it's because I've bought it from other guys on here with equally good taste and expertise. I grew up in the '70s, and it took months to save enough cash to buy an awful Satellite Precision copy. I used to dream of Fenders and Musicmans until Mick Karn came along with a sound and vibe so extraordinary that the Wal thing haunted me until I had anough cash to buy one about 30 years later. Having owned the two I've had recently has been a real pleasure, almost an honour given their history and provenance, but deep down with a move to recording over live work, I just prefer good old fashioned passive single PUP instruments. But I will miss it
Very true Chris; Basschat is a kind of Alladin's Cave for gear, especially basses! I've done pretty much the same thing as you and gone back to simpler, passive basses in recent years. Spent most of last year using a Yamaha BB300 that cost me peanuts in comparison to most of the basses I've bought and sold here on BC. But I really enjoyed playing it and it sounded great. That said, this Wal looks an absolute beauty and it is tugging on a few heartstrings... -
For the few that don't know him, Beedster is a gent and a BC legend. Buy with confidence. And don't dawdle! Just pull the trigger...
+1 As I said earlier today on his Ampeg for sale thread, Chris is too generous for his own good. And here he is again, proving that fact even more vociferously.. Can only echo and underline what's already been said about Chris, he is a true gent and a Basschat legend. He also really knows his stuff, so any piece of bass gear passing through his hands will be absolutely top draw. And this very lovely Wal will be no exception! -
Wow - That is such a good price for this rig!! Chris - you are too, too generous to the Basschat community.. Surely, this won't hang around much longer at this price? GLWTS -

Think this passed through my hands a few years back.. I got it in a trade in 2009 for a Fender Jazz 5, and I thought this was by far the better of the two basses in question. Tonally it was really good in either active or passive mode, but the active did offer a more e.q. extended range should you need it. I also remember it playing really nicely and as you say, the B string was superb! I think the picks up were Haussel btw.. GLWTS -

Absolutely, utterly devastated today, but so, so grateful for every word, every melody and every moment of his brilliant inspirational music. When I was a kid first playing in bands in the mid 70's, Bowie was the one we all looked up to and aspired to be like. It wasn't just about his voice, or the songwriting or even the sound of his records - all of which were amazing to me - but it was about trying to work out where he was going next artistically, because with each new album, he did something different, groundbreaking and exciting that made you think again. It's been said many times before, but each new Bowie album in that 1970-80 period really was a big event! It won't ever be quite the same now, knowing that there'll be no more new Bowie music and ideas to look forward to. RIP David Bowie.
Same here. Aladdin Sane bought from saved up pocket money and a little help from my dad. (Love the 'Overplaying since 1977' line btw..!) I went to the exhibition when it was in London and it reinforced how important he's been musically for a large chunk of my life, esp. the formative years. Everything from Space Oddity to Let's Dance meant something, even in some small way. I got a bit choked up at the exhibition as I was able to relate the music to so many good experiences when I was a kid/younger person. In terms of connecting with everything, not a chance. Tonight was such a let down (apart from Loving the Alien the rest left me cold - and really, why would anyone - even the Genius Jones - take on God Only Knows?!). Never Let Me Down was very 80s but not in a good way - and, again, deciding to get Mickey Rourke rapping on a track may have been a stretch too far. Then there was the Glass Spider tour (Spinal Tap II without Messrs St. Hubbins, Tufnel, Smalls et al) and to top it all the Sound+Vision stripped down/Adrian Belew show. Didn't really like the Earthling direction but admired him for sticking his handsome head into the world of drum and bass rather than going after the easy wins. All that being said, he's still the musician that has influenced me the most in life (and whose music means the most to me) and the fact that he's still making music that challenges us all these years later is testament to his brilliance. Blackstar gets its first listen chez Riva this afternoon with a nice cuppa and an open mind (sort of!).. can't wait.
This pretty much describes how I feel about Bowie. First album I ever bought was Ziggy Stardust in 1972 - did a paper round to save up the money for it - and I've been a fan of him as a singer, songwriter and originator ever since! My daughter's bought me the new album for Xmas but I haven't actually received it yet, so have still to hear it.. Absolutely loved the video for 'Blackstar' and the song too, and similarly, 'Lazarus', so I can't wait actually get my hands on the album. There's so much great music around, and many, many other artists who's music means so much to me, but Bowie will always be the one who inspired me over and above everyone else! The fact that he's still putting music out that gets people talking at the age of 69 is amazing, but when you look back at his track record, it's not really that much of a surprise.
Well Nik, I'm still travelling down your way quite a lot, and it did sound rather nice through the V4b.... Thanks very much for the comments mate, hope all's well with you. Following our last conversation I was thinking you might want a new blonde in your life to be honest
Really good thanks, Chris.. A new blonde would be very nice but I'm banned from buying any more basses. Too many have sneaked their way into Silverfoxnik Towers recently (apparently).. Two gorgeous Wals there btw Chris; you have seriously good taste in bass guitars! Nik

Just bought a Nikon COOLPIX camera from Andy and everything went perfectly.. Andy's communication throughout was great and the camera arrived in excellent condition thanks to some very careful packing by Andy.. Plus, it's a really good little camera. I'd have no hesitation in dealing with Andy again. Nik
