1. Hi Folks, I just bought a lovely old Sylvania valve from Gareth. In the process, Gareth was kind enough to post me 5 different valves to try before I picked the Sylvania, including a 1965 Millard worth £40.. Not only that, back at the South East Bass Bash last September, Gareth did a set up on my Levinson Blade as a favour.. Where else could you find that kind of help and trust but from here on BASSCHAT and from people like Gareth? So rest assured that you can deal with Gareth in absolute confidence, knowing you're in safe hands in terms of the quality of the gear he sells and trades, and in terms of the way he treats everybody! Thanks Gareth; really, really appreciate it! Nik
2.
You know it's a funny thing, but I've known about the Roscoe Beck for about 10 years and it's only really now - with immaculate timing - that I think of it as a Jazz! I'd always seen it as a sort of half-way house between Jazz and Precision, the best-of-both-worlds Fender (which to be honest, it is). This had been both reinforced by its looks, which to my eye are more Precision than Jazz, and its reputation. But yes, having played it several times now, Michael's spot on, this is a - possibly the - 'super Jazz' It certainly does a lot more than Jazz Bass, but that's where the core tone is centred, and all other tones are either side of that. I must admit part of me wants to stick on some La Bella Jamersons and check out the neck PUP in series to see just how vintage a Precision tone I can get, but of course the problem with doing that is that I'm likely to lose some of the very versatility that I bought the bass for (although even as I write I'm thinking about it some more....). So yes, Super Jazz is about right
I think you're spot-on with this assessment Chris.. I've had 3 Roscoe Beck 5 strings and I felt they were more of a Jazz bass than a P bass.. Great nonetheless in so many ways, but still , ultimately, its more of a Jazz bass tonal palette.
3. I'm amazed this hasn't gone yet, especially with the Badass II thrown in! And yes; look forward to catching up with you at some point when you're back in the SE, Chris..
4. Just bought some Pro Steel strings from Paul which went really smoothly and I'm very happy with the strings.. As it says above really; you can deal with confidence with the fretmeister! Thanks Paul..
5. BUMP for a very nicely priced and well spec'd P bass! Goes without saying that Chris is always a pleasure to deal with and what's more, after this sale, he's almost certainly going to be on Mastermind this year with his specialist subject being 'Buying & selling P Basses on Basschat'! So if he says it's a good 'un, it's definitely a good 'un..!
6. Just received a set of 4 Fender style tuners from Richard which are perfect! Even more so considering the fact that I bought them from Richard after he saw my post about which tuning pegs to get for a short scale bass.. Suffice to say, he's definitely a very genuine person to deal with and yet another Basschatter I'd highly recommend to others here on the Forum! Thanks Rich
7.
I run a valve LDC mic for vocal recording which has just been upgraded with a Sylvania 12ax7 from the for sale section here (thanks again Gareth), and you really tell the difference between tubes with this. The stock tube was nice but a just a little brittle and 2 dimensional. The Sylvania has a nice bold open sound with lovely depth and detail (American sounding).
+1 I'm just trying out a few different valves courtesy of Gareth also, and there is a significant difference between the ones he's just sent me and the two i already had - i.e. a Sovtek and a Ruby (I think that's what it is? The Sylvania 12ax7 gives a fabulous tone in my Daniel D turbo-booster pre-amp pedal compared to all the others, which include Mullards and Brimars, though the Brimar comes a very close second for me. The Sovtek and Ruby sound less full and rich to my ears and break up too easily for my taste. The Mullards are very warm sounding and the Brimars quite similar to them IMO.. Though I prefer the Brimar. Until this week, I really hadn't any experience of this, but having now tried out a variety of different valves, I'm absolutely convinced it's worth checking out as many different ones as you can to enhance and improve your tone..
8. Thanks for the replies chaps.. And yes BetaFunk, it's a 30" scale Encore with a chunky P Bass style neck. From what you're saying, it'd appear I've got quite a lot of options then. I quite fancy some traditional Fender style tuners on it I think to keep it as authentic as possible.
9. Hi Folks Just wondered if anyone has ever replaced the stock tuning pegs on a cheap short scale bass with a better quality set, and if so, what would you recommend? I have an old Encore short scale P bass that i bought for my son to learn on, but the tuning pegs (enclosed rectangular shape style) don't work well at all and the bass doesn't stay in tune.. With a smaller headstock, I'm assuming that you have to be careful about the size of any potential replacements, which must limit options?? As the bass only cost £35, I don't want to spend too much on it, but I think it's an upgrade that would help a lot. So any suggestions would be welcome.. Thanks for looking as ever! Nik
10. ..Wednesday morning and 'it's not raining cats & dogs' kind of BUMP !
11. Hi Folks I have this quite rare Reussenzehn Daniel D valve pedal for sale for which I'm asking £65 + p&p. Recently serviced and in full working order, this is quite a rare piece of kit that produces a really warm, valvey tone that makes a huge difference to the overall presence of your sound when playing live!! And as a bonus, it provides a significant gain boost which is particularly useful if you use passive basses like I do.. It's currently fitted with a Sylvania 12ax7 from 1976 (that I got from Walbassist earlier this year) which can be bought with the Daniel D for an extra £20, which is what I paid for it. Otherwise, the unit will come fitted with a more generic 12ax7 valve. Photos: It's in pretty good condition, works perfectly and comes with the PSU, which is adapted for UK usage. It's a rare beast, but there is some info about it on the net here if you want to know more: Reussenzehn website (Look on the 'Musiker' page under bass preamps) Harmony Central Disco Fred's Effects database According to the website, these retailed at 189 Euros new but I'm looking to for £65 plus P&P in the UK, which is quite a bit less than I paid for it 3 years ago here on Basschat. If you're interested and want to know more, please ask here or PM me. Thanks for looking Nik
12. Hi Gareth Happy New Year! Hope you had a good one... I need a 12AX7 for my Hughes & Kettner Bassbase 600 head; what have you got left valve-wise, if anything? Cheers Nik
13. +1 to all of the above.. Just sold an SWR cab to Charlie and it was all good; he's very easy to deal with, good comms, turned up bang on time and left half an hour later with the cab.. Good player too! Hope you enjoy the cab, Charlie
14. Fabulous bass.. and quite rare too! GLWTS
15. Thanks Alex! You're absolutely right; these are very well made cabs and because of that fact, I did consider at one point putting in some neo drivers to up the power handling and bring the weight down a bit. Other acquisitions got it in the way of that little project unfortunately.. All PMs replied to BTW
16. Hi Folks NOW SOLD - THANKS FOR LOOKING I bought this from Moos3h here on Basschat 2 years ago in order to run it as part of a two-rig set up along with my SWR Triad, but that plan never really happened. In the end, a combination of too few gigs and not enough space at what gigs I've actually done has meant this has been little used.. Which is a shame as it's a great little cab that sounds pretty sweet (to my ears anyway), isn't too heavy and is in good condition for it's age. The recent acquisition of a Schroeder 21012 means this will get even less use, hence why I'm finally putting it up for sale. Photos: Here's the SWR blurb about it: "WORKINGMAN'S 2x12T Bass Cabinet enclosure. The workingman's 2x12T was a great sounding two way enclosure featuring two custom designed 12" Celestion speakers. The WM 2x12 came standard with the "Texas Bar Proof" metal grill. Aluminum input panel. Power Handling: 250 watts, Impedance: 8 ohms Size: 23 1/4"W x 23 1/4"H x 18 1/2"D Weight: 55 lbs Input panel features: Parallel 1/4" input jacks (In & Out ) 3-way switch for horn ( 0db, -6db, off.) Aluminum construction. Production period: 1995 to 1999" More blurb here: http://www.swramps.c...php/#wmspeakers I'd be happy to post this but obviously, would particularly welcome interest from anyone local to Littlehampton, West Sussex. And if you are local and would like to come and hear the cab in action for yourself, then you'd be very welcome. I'm going to be putting a few more bits and pieces up for sale over the next couple of days but have to head out to a gig now.. But if you have any questions about the 212, or if you'd like any more photos, then please ask here or PM me. Thanks for looking, Nik
17. +1 - very influential indeed. R.I.P.
18.
I think you should use exactly the same kit as in 1978, you know, for the sake of complete verisimilitude ...
Nice to hear - hope it goes well for you!
19. I had 1 of these basses about 10 years back and it was surprisingly good.. It had a great sound due to the P/J pick up configuration (which admittedly I am a fan of) and it was very nice to play. Perhaps that was in part down to the through-neck design? Whatever it was, it certainly punched above it's weight for a budget bass. So GLWTS and have a BUMP on me!
20.
Anyone have any suggestions of the best CDs or DVDs to start with, for someone who has none of his material?
+1 one to the above mentioned 'Sign of the Times' and 'Parade', but IMO, other Prince albums worth hearing in their entirety would include: 'Dirty Mind' '1999' 'Purple Rain' ( a genius pop masterpiece in my view) 'LoveSexy' There are always brilliant tracks on most Prince Albums, even if the album itself isn't great overall. For example, the free album he did about 4 years ago that was distributed by the Daily Mail had some fantastic tunes on it.. As for his live performances and musicianship, the shows I've seen over the years have been extraordinary! I remember seeing the LoveSexy tour back in the late '80s and it was just unbelievable. His singing, guitar playing and abilities as a pianist were peerless. Above and beyond that for me though are his abilities as a songwriter - sometimes overlooked because his personality and showmanship tends to grab all the headlines. Songs like 'Sign of the Times', 'Kiss', 'When Doves Cry' are classics! But there are lots of other gems in his catalogue too.. Check out 'Condition of the Heart' from the 'Paisley Park' album or 'Do U Lie' from 'Parade - fabulous. The other thing that I think is worth mentioning about Prince is his influence on other artists and musicians.. Not sure who said it but there's a saying about truly great artists being a 'barometer for their times' and I think that's definitely true of Prince during the 1980s, just as it was for Bowie in the 1970s and the Beatles in the 1960s.. All subjective of course, but that's my 2p worth. Nice thread btw bubinga5..
