Chris showing us how to break the fretless playing mold.
silverfoxnik replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
I don't know about Chris McBride @bubinga5, but Man, that Drummer!! πππ I don't play music like that, nor can I play bass like that, but I do like George Duke and his music... It's always had a good, positive vibe about it. And isn't it great that audiences enjoy and respect great musicianship and that there's the space for musicians to be able to express themselves so freely ? But, going back to your original point, I agree with you about the use of vibrato by some fretless bass players - used too much and it tends to overshadow everything else good in the bass part... For want of a better analogy, a bit like overseasoning a simple meal with really good ingredients.. But I think in some genres of music, it's actually expected to be there as part of the sound - like slap bass in certain types of funk music - and this is one of those genres. -

It's always a pleasure dealing with @gary mac. Apart from doing yet another great set up job on 2 of my basses last week, Gary did both jobs really quickly for me as I needed them for a recording session. For any North London, Herts, Essex Basschatters looking to have some work done on their basses or guitars, look no further than Gary! Thanks again Gary.... ππ

*** NOW SOLD *** Hi Folks, Bass Collection Power Bass for sale in excellent condition. Β£SOLD or very near offer. As stated above, the bass is in 'as new' condition, has a nice low action so is super-playable, the electronics are all fine, the truss rod is working perfectly, and it's a very lightweight bass. Comes with a Pro Tec gig bag Most important of all, it sounds exactly like a P Bass should! Bought 2 years ago from @greyparrot for a recording project but that's finished now, hence why it's up for sale And to be honest, if I hadn't recently bought a 50s reissue P Bass on here, I'd probably be keeping this as it's so easy to play, sounds great and looks fantastic IMO, but such is life here on Basschat, even for super-pretty basses like this one! π Collection or meet up preferred within 50 miles of Potton, Central Bedfordshire. And of course, trials very welcome here with your or my bass amps/cabs. Kettle very much set to 'on' position... Any questions, please ask away here or please send me a PM. Thanks for looking.. π Nik

Slap on a Thunderbird, metal on a Beatle Bass
silverfoxnik replied to Rayman's topic in General Discussion
Ooh, er!! π― At first glance at the title of this thread, I thought you were in grave danger of getting cancelled by the wokerati, @Rayman... Happily, that's not going to be the case I see, and we can all settle back down from DEFCON 5 to another quiet and unassuming bass guitar discussion... In my experience, there isn't 'one bass to rule them all', and even if there was, it'd still end up doing the rounds on Basschat for sale forum I expect.. Personally, I like playing slap bass lines on my custom T-Bird (though I doubt anyone else would agree), but despite it's flexibility, I still want and need other basses with different pick up configurations, becjs, woods, ergonomics, electronics etc, etc, to best suit the different bands and recording projects I'm doing. What's more, I genuinely think I'd get bored with just one bass. -

Great idea for a conversation @Rayman@Rayman π Another BassWorlder here too... Think I joined in 2006, so it's now 17 years of having the best possible 'bass community' experience imaginable IMO. Echoing what many have said already, this place is a community that enriches you, entertains you, inspires you - sometimes annoys you - and most importantly of all for me, it helps you. I've simply lost count over the years of the times that Basschat members have helped me out with things ; technical help, playing help, gear loans, deps, advice etc, etc. The list is endless. When I started playing bass in the mid 70s, there was next to nothing available to help you get started... I would have loved to have had something remotely like Basschat back then. Through buying and selling gear and from being involved in the South East Bass Bash since 2008, I've been lucky enough to meet loads of Basschatters in person, and made some very good friends along the way. So for me, Basschat is a community first, and an amazing information resource second. It's priceless really, when you think about it. Talking of priceless, I still miss Big Beef Chief - his contributions were off the Richter scale funny! π -
Great venue, The Music Machine! Has a rising stage that was set at different heights for different gigs. I saw The Antz and The Banshees there on a double bill in '78 - it was a fantastic night!
-
Very good point... Adam wrote a lot of the bass parts on all the early Antz songs.

Great to see a thread on here about Leigh and where's @4000 when you need him? We used to talk a lot about what an amazing bass player Leigh is back in the day... Leigh has lived in California for many years now and is still pretty active, touring with one of two versions of BowWowWow that's still going- the other one is fronted by Annabella. He's had two Wals over the last 40 years, both ProI II models. Back in the late 90s, I sold him the leather scratchplate model that he uses a lot these days, though I think he had to change the neck on it at one point. Totally right about Leigh's slap playing @Marky L- he is really good in that department... But his signature sound is definitely his pick playing, and often on BWW tunes, it's the bass lines that really made the songs IMHO. Band I was in at the time supported BWW on (IIRC) their last ever UK tour in 1982, so I had the pleasure of watching Leigh play every night for nearly 3 weeks.. He was absolutely superb - hardly ever missed a note or a beat and was great to watch. There are lots of his bass lines that I love, but amongst all of them, 'Go Wild In The Country', 'Prince of Darkness' and 'Sexy Eiffel Tower' are my personal favourites...

And you too, Mick - sorry I spelt Sara's name wrong in my post!
-
Just had the pleasure of meeting Mick in person in what was a typical 'Basschat services station' style rendezvous, somewhere off the M1 near Northampton. Mick is now the proud owner of a lovely Squier CV P Bass which I hope he really enjoys playing ! The whole transaction has been really easy; great comms, fast payment etc... So, I'm very happy to recommend Mick to one and all here on Basschat. Thanks Mick, it was a pleasure to meet you and Sara this morning and enjoy the bass! Nik

Bass Collection Detroit Bass REDUCED - *SOLD*

My thoughts exactly... It's a beautiful looking bass as it is but that matching headstock takes it to another level! I had a CIJ P Bass a few years back and it was superbly built, and a joy to play. π€ Yet another one that I shouldn't have sold.... (bashes head repeatedly with multi fx unit).. π Anyway, enough of my self-recrimination.. She's a beaut Brian and GLWTS ! ππ

Thought I'd better bump this as I have been so busy lately, I forgot. Which reminds me - I have a question for you : In all the time I've been buying and selling bass gear here on Basschat, I've never had a situation like this one, where my For Sale advert has had almost 600 views, but I've not received one single PM or offer! So, my question is, what's wrong, what am I doing wrong... ...Is it the bass itself, the price I'm asking, the current state of the second hand market, my advert?? I'm a little but stumped to be honest. So, Basschat friends, your constructive, insightful feedback and comments would be most welcome. Thanks ππ

Hi Folks, Well, who says lightning doesn't strike twice? I've just bought a lovely P Bass from Jon, aka @Mudpup, and the whole transaction from start to finish was an absolute pleasure - just like the first time ! Suffice to say that Jon is a man of impeccable taste when it comes to basses/bass gear and is as accommodating and chilled out as it could possibly be when it comes to sorting out a Basschat deal.. In short, highly, highly recommended to one and all on here and a credit to the Basschat community. Thanks again Jon for a great conversation, the chance to try out your lovely new Warwicks and for a fabulous P Bass of course! ππ Here's to the next one... π Nik
