1. These are very fine instruments... I used to have a Tobias Classic 5 many moons ago and it was a peach of a bass.. This looks like a very good example of the quality workmanship that early pre-Gobson Tobias basses were renowned for. Good luck with the sale..
 2.
Good to see Si's old posts, he is sore;y missed.
+1 Very true! Reading through a few pages of this thread again, I wonder if any of the very latest ultra-trendy products will end up on this thread at some point; D-Class amps, Auralex Gramma pads etc, etc?
 3.
So, now I'm nicely established in my current band I've decided to go retro (well, I'm retro already - just thought the gear should catch up)!! so have just just relieved Beedster of his Peavy Classic Valve Power amp and Zephead of his Digitech PB8 valve pre-amp/multieffect. Looking forward to putting this together with my Purple Chilli and hoping for a lovely vintage vibe! P Bass build to follow very shortly!
Sounds like a good move!
 4.
Owned both had 2 Wal customs one fretted one fretless, nice basses but don't think they are as versatile as Alembics. It is defined for me thus: Me paying a Wal sounds like me playing a Wal. (and that goes for many basses tbh) Me playing an Alembic sounds like me. To very many peoples ears there is probably little to discern but to mine it is everything. I still own the Alembic btw
+1 I've owned a number of Wals over the years and played a few Alembics too, though never actually owned one. Also, I've more recently heard a couple of Alembics owned by Basschat members, including jakesbass's one - which is the most amazing bass I think i've ever seen! Bottom line for me is that Alembics are more versatile and there is far more choice available in their product range; different models, pick up options, woods, electronics etc - it's quite an extensive array of choices (if you can afford it of course). With Wal however, you get a choice of 4, 5 or 6 string model which can then have different tone-wood facings etc..but each of those still comes with the same Wal pick ups and Wal electronics, which do not vary and have been pretty much the same since 1981.. As it happens, i really like the Wal tone, but it is a very definite sound that was designed into the bass right from the start by Ian Waller 30 years ago and it has stayed that way ever since. And whilst it's certainly unique, i don't think it is meant to be that versatile.. In an ideal world, i'd love to have one of each bass but given the way they look and at the price they are, they can look/feel a bit out of place at the Dog 'n' Duck on a Friday night if you know what I mean Do miss my very first Pro 2e though....
 5. Thanks! Always been a Prince fan so I'll enjoy this..
 6.
Cool Nick - I'm not sure I need the whole damn theatre space for this thing - maybe I can do it in the jam room as I'm not sure how many people will be wanting to check this out but either way I will need to borrow an amp/cab of some sort... is there a PA that we can use as well? I only ask as I could bring my laptop with some additional sounds and stuff on... let's work this out on a PM soon Mike
Hi Mike OK - will do! O have a few ideas on it so I will PM you at the weekend... it's been a very busy 2 weeks at work for me, so I have not been able to give much attention to this thread so apologies to one and all about that ! Things to sort out and update are: 1. Workshops list 2. Charities to support 3. Volunteers & tasks Thankfully, Merton's doing a fine job on the raffle which is great Cheers Nik
 7.
Right, brought this a while ago from here, looking for the possibility of trading for something Markbass / Gallien Krueger like so stock photos until I get home from work so the 2x10 combo, fresh from a complete service, new tube fitted ect. and the 2x10 extension cab. Trying out is of course welcome and possible, im based in Farnborough, Hampshire any questions just PM me Cheers Chris
This was my old rig if i'm not mistaken, which I bought 2 or 3 years ago from Crez.. I gigged it a lot and it never ever let me down! It's a fabulous set-up and i still miss it's flexibility and features to be honest... I only moved it on as i wanted to go down a more valve-driven route and my band had stopped..otherwise, I'd definitely have kept it. With a recent service etc, etc, this has got to be good for someone on here because it's so versatile and having the two channels (with the footswitch), makes it so useful for gigging.. It looks like this: Good luck with the sale!
 8.
thanks for your kind words sir! my mate chris (williams from the slash tribute) linked me up to the discussion, haven't stopped grinning since! glad you had a good time, you collectively allowed us to have a good time. my main bass is a fender precision lyte, and i use a squire p for standard c tuning and an aria stb (that cost me £32 from ebay) for drop d but i had time to tune on the day. i was using a big muff bass, an mxr phase 90 and a cry baby bass wah. i use an mxr micro amp to boost for slap and to level out the passive basses with the p-lyte. i see you're in littlehampton? - we're playing in the crown this saturday (30th) if you're around. thanks again!
You're very welcome; it was a great gig and I really enjoyed the band's playing and attitude overall! As I said, I loved the sound and way you played those tunes - really inventive and brought the bass nicely to the front (where it should be of course).. I'd love to come to the gig on Saturday, but i have my son at the weekends so it will depend on getting child-care sorted..Where else are you playing?
 9.
Excellent, great link, I had a discussion a while back with someone saying when you are at a festival you need to be on your A game and this is a great example.
+1
 10. That's just brilliant! Love the cowboy dude...
 11. It was a really good festival judging by what i saw of it on Sunday.. The Blockheads were very, very good and seeing them reminded me of just how amazing Ian Dury's lyrics were and are and how good the band is! The drummer did a great mini-drum solo which was cool and all the band made their mark during the set at one point or another. But I have to say that Norman is the star of that band and his playing and energy are just outstanding! There was a great band playing around 6pm on the U stage called ' Free Beer & Naked Women' and they were absolutely brilliant! Great energy, loads of character and they really knew how to work the crowd... Very impressive bass player too I thought; he was using what looked like an old Yamaha BB1100 (or similar) and had a really full on sound with lots of nice fx going on too.. Wonder if he's a BC member? Anyway - check them out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HZE0cf-YeQ...feature=related
 12.
Absolutely not - if I in fact do go ahead and give a little workshop type thing it'll be to demonstrate some picking techniques that basically get away from all the percussive w***ery and into stuff that has the potentially be melodic and funky - but if the last one was anything to go by I thought most people who played were using finger style, tapping and yes a bit of slapping too but it was all pretty restrained compared to say the London Bass Guitar Show that was just horrible slap overkill... my aim is to educate as to the other possibilities when using thumb and pop stuff - hope that's OK...?
Spot on Mike! I agree - last year's Bash was pretty cool.. The worst ever though was the one in Northampton some years ago when that one guy just played slap bass for about 4 hours non-stop! It was horrendous.. Anyway, moving onto much better things, what you're proposing sounds really good to me, thanks. Nik
 13.
The Raffle thread has begun
Thanks Mert! Will add some stuff to it over the weekend...
 14.
Count me in. I missed the last bash so will be good to see peeps and generate some new GAS. I hope some other lefties can make it otherwise I'll have no toys to try out Ummm, what shall I bring? Eden Navigator preamp and SVP-Pro, Mesa 1x15 RR, Warwick $$ Streamer (Lefty), Stingray (Lefty)
Great news - bring the lot I'd say!!
 15.
Jack...
Excellent!
 16.
Nik, I presume you will be having a raffle and thus need some bass 'stuff' donations? I will have a dig around and see what I can come up with. Definitely have some vgc tab books (Bilbo!) kicking around, a Precision tort s/p and maybe some other bits and bobs
Thanks Clarky and yes, we will be having a raffle.. Merton is handling that so any offers of stuff, please send him a PM. Nik
 17. When I was a young boy learning bass, in the mid '70's, I was pretty much doing it on my own with no help around of any sort - no easy way to get playing advice, expertise about gear or just some friendly banter.. A couple of books and going to gigs was the only way to find stuff out. So, for me, one of the really important things about these Basschat Bass Bashes, is to make it easier for bass players of all ages and all levels of experience to get together and share knowledge, learn about different styles of playing, try out new equipment, meet people from the Forum...and of course, have a brilliant time in the process! It should say on the door "where fun is compulsory" or something like that..
 18.
As I mentioned earlier I'd be happy to give a demo - either in small group or to the whole Bash if my embarrassment levels will tolerate it - explaining some slap and picking techniques that get away from relentless machine gun triplets and always riffing away in open E or A when slapping... I'd be happy to have a few others plugging in as well to enable them to learn or share any of the techniques discussed/demonstrated... Let me know if any of y'all is interested - we can always use one of the off-shoot performance rooms to do this in Cheers Mike
Thanks Mike; that's great! I thought the informal session you did last year with the loop station - which just kind of happened - was really good! So anything along those lines would be really cool!
 19.
Sadly I've got a gig that evening back in the Midlands, so will have to miss this again. I'll make it one year!
Shame..but it's great that you're gigging... See you next year hopefully!
 20.
Was that not the plan anyway?
Mrs T thought so...

Sad, but really kinder and for the best all round.
Sorry to hear that Al, I hope Pam's OK? I'm in Manchester myself for a funeral today; they come round too often these days i'm sad to say..
