2. +1 That's a lovely bass; good luck with the sale!
 3. Nice post! It's definitely true that 'all that glisters is not gold', though trying to stay true to that idea with Basschat around is another story!
 4. A free BUMP just to say that I played this bass a few years ago when Andre was selling a Wal Mach II which I went over to check out for Mike G.. He'd only just got the Fodera at the time and it was really interesting to be able to compare it directly with the Wal.. Though they're very different animals and I do love Wal basses, the Fodera had something just a little more 'exotic' and 'boutique' about it...Hard to put it into words exactly, but the only other bass I've played that had a such a similar quality, was an Alembic.. Anyway, the Fodera really is a fabulous instrument and that pre-amp is something special... Good luck with the sale!
 5. I think it depends on what you are prepared to pay, but I would have thought somewhere around the £2k mark..
 6. +1 to that IMO, though having a low action is easier to play, the trade off is that the tone is better when the action is that bit higher.
 7.
Here's a reminder of what we are like:
Fantastic stuff Clarky!! Hope you find someone soon....
 8.
Having owned this bass for just six months, and wondered frequently why on earth I traded it (for a bass which I then decided I didn't like!), I am hugely relieved to discover the provenance of this bass. Absolutely no disrespect intended towards anyone (including Nick Beggs), but I'm a child of the 60's/70's. I more-or-less gave up listening to current bands from the early 80's onwards and, had you asked me "why?" at the time, I would have cited bands like Kajagoogoo as one of the reasons. That plus the keyboard/synth-driven electronic nonsense that swept the charts at about the same time. Had the story now emerged that this was Trevor Bolder's favourite studio bass (or something) I would have been mortified at letting it go.
Are you a Trevor Bolder fan Jack?
 9.
Having played both and owned a Custom I'd say they were quite different-sounding basses in many ways. I prefer the Pro.
+1 They're very different sounding basses; unlike the Custom models which all have a mahogony core, the Pro basses were Ash bodies with no multi-laminate facings. That , plus very different circuitry makes them quite different animals.. Like 4000, I prefer the Pro models but the first Custom I ever had made for me in 1983 (and which was stolen sadly in 1987), was a fabulous bass and one of the few basses i really miss today! Gwilym: I'm still surprised I sold it on too!! Seriously, I had virtually stopped using it having moved almost exclusively to 5 string basses, I kind of fell out of love with it.. It's great to hear this story though and also, to know that it's been restored to it's former glory by Paul herman at Wal.
 10. Wow!! very surprising news..... Great sounding rig this; heard it a few times at Bass Bashes and gigs...packs a real punch! Good luck with the sale Al!
 11. I emailed H&K but haven't heard anything as yet, and that was 2 weeks ago.. My amp chappie is going to try and contact them too.
 12.
You can order new toroidals wound to spec, probably not cheap. One of the advantages of toridals is they make less mechanical noise as there is less straight length of wire to vibrate.
Thanks for that; where do you get them from??
 13. Thanks for the replies folks! It's definitely a noisy transformer - the sound doesn't come through the speakers or the DI out. It is located above and around the transforemer itself, which is located in the rear, right hand side of the amp as you look at it head on. As for making the adjustments and trying out the remedies mentioned above, to see if they improve matters, would you recommend them being done by someone who's knowledgeable and experienced with handling electrical equipment? Only, this amp delivers up to a 1000 watts at 2 ohms, so it's not something I'd feel comfortable fiddling about with to be honest...
 14. A '..looks like this will have to go on Evilbay' kind of BUMP!
 15.
Why do you suspect the transformer? seems unlikely to be the transformer in my experience. What sort of noise, hiss or 50Hz mains hum? How good is your mains electricity - a few of my amps are noisy at home, work fine elsewhere, even though the house wiring is tested all OK. Can you borrow same amp and try at home to compare? Final shot would be take it to a good technician - as with everything in life several causes and several fixes.
Thanks for the reply.... I had it checked by my local technician and he said it was definitely the transformer making the hum (as it did so when he tested it in his workshop).. He also said that with these type of transformers, it can't be cured except by replacing it with another one, which he thought might be difficult bearing in mind this particular amp is now discontinued.. At the kind of volume these amps can make, the hum isn't an isue at all when gigging, but if possible, i'd like to use the amp for practicing at home too..Hence why i thought i'd do a little research here before going back to my technician to see about replacing the transformer. Hope that makes sense...?
 16. Hello Folks I have a Hughes & Kettner Bassbase 600 head that I just love the sound of, even though it's a heavy pice of kit! Part of what makes it so heavy is the toroidal transformer that powers it and though it works perfectly, it's a bit noisy when it comes to home usage.. So I'm wondering whether it could be replaced at all and if so, what would be involved? I wouldn't do the work myself as I am not skilled at all in these matters, but before I go and ask my local electronics chappie to take on such a job, I'd like to find out a little more about it if possible..especially in terms of where to source the right part, cost implications etc, etc. So, if anyone here's been down a similar path and has any words of wisdom to share, it would be very much appreciated! Thanks for looking.. Cheers Nik
 17.
Sold! pending picking up and paying out! Thanks for all the PMs and posts. I didn't pay much for it originally, and the flats were 2nd hand from a Basschatter, so would prefer to move this on to a fellow BC'er in the same spirit of bargainess. (new word invented )
Great new word! This thread/sale is what Basschat is all about IMO...
 18.
Good luck for the sale and all the best especially for Mrs C to get on the mend.
+1 All the best with it Clarky...hope all is OK!
 19. Great story; thanks for that!! I do remember the cigarette burn...sadly, owning the bass didn't help impove my slapping skills I owned it from 2005 to 2010 and i bought it from fellow Basschatter Gwilym, who'd bought it s/h at GAK a year or two before.. Interestingly, Gwylim sold it to me with two of the electronic circuit boards - the original one and a spare one.. The circuit boards on these are attached to the scratchplate and are numbered so you know if you have the right one for the bass. I sold the second one and had a little bit of work done on the original board as it was not working 100% as it should. The bass finally got the attention it deserved when Happy Jack had Paul Herman service it properly last year, so I bet it sounds fantastic now!
 20.
Great songs. DIY ethic with her new label, I want her to tour. She is spellbinding.
+1 I saw her on what was I think, here one and only tour, in the late 70's at the then Hammersmith Odeon and it was sensational! If she decided to tour now, she could probably tour continually for 2 or 3 years, the demand would be so strong..
Love her. Not sure we need a director's cut of "Flower of the Mountain" (The Sensual World) - the original was soooo effin' perfect.
+1 Sounds good though...
 21.
Well, well, well. This bass used to belong to me. I sold it in 1992, to a guy in Macclesfield. It's got a quite a special history, if anyone is interested?
yes please! It was mine for a while too...
 22.
Think you'll find the majority of the audience are standing in the space between the performers. The few who are seated are usually in the area behind the particular week's cool / legendary / old acts (delete as required) and often seem to be friends of the act or chosen due to their dress sense! ( Incidentally if you get to be in the audience you are asked to wear dark clothing so as not to stand out too much!!) Think the audience is essential for the prog, gives it much more of a gig feel - anyone remember Bob Harris mumbling platitudes after a stonking performance by bands on Whistle Test in the 70's ? - not good. Still love the show though, thought this weeks was pretty good. In the absence of any other dedicated live music shows on the main channels it still fulfills it's function IMO. Have discovered a number of artists over the years that I probably would have overlooked otherwise. Would n't be too upset if it had a revamp so long as the basic idea was retained. And guess I'm alone in thinking the sound is okay too?!! ( could be my advancing years / deafness I suppose? )
+1 A large number of the audience is made up of the various artist's management/record label/publisher/friends etc... Despite it's perceived faults, the key for me is that Later a) does promote and support live music and it provides an outlet for many acts that would otherwise never get on mainstream TV..
