  1. I was way too poor for even such lofty instruments as a Shaftesbury Ricky copy then, Chris. Let alone a Wal. 😁
  2. Very true Chris! I played that gig with my Hondo II Ricky copy, which I still have...
  3. Fantastic song, amazing bass playing! Dunaway is such a creative musician... Been listening to this song regularly for 50 years and I'm still not tired of it (nor of the album).
  4. Great thread Chris! I've always been a big fan of The Stranglers and years ago, between 1979 and 1980 my first band were signed to the Stranglers management company, who's offices were located by the old Borough Market near London Bridge... Their offices were on the first floor of the building, and on the ground floor was a big open space where all of The Stranglers gear was stored. As part of the management deal, we were allowed to rehearse there overnight at the weekends and we used JJ's bass rig as our PA (his rig was a 2 kilowatt PA). I remember their roadie telling me that JJ liked to use a PA with multiple cabs as his rig so he could point them in different directions across the stage to make sure he could always hear himself properly. I also remember being shown some of JJ's basses at the time, including an absolutely beautiful, black, through-neck Yamaha BB bass which I thought was about the most amazing bass I'd ever seen at the time! As well as getting to meet the band a few times, we supported them at The New Theatre in Oxford on their 'Raven Tour' , and also at the infamous London Rainbow gig in April 1980 when Hugh Cornwall was in prison for 6 weeks for possession of drugs. It was an amazing night as the band brought in loads of famous artists to sing different songs in their set.. We shared our dressing room with Toyah (who wore more clothes back then than she does now. 😉) Also on the bill that night were a certain 'beat combo' from Manchester called Joy Division. Those were the days... 😁
  5. Hi Folks, Here's a shout out to @ped @Sibob @obbm @WalMan( and anyone else who was there that day) . I found these very low quality photos today in an old Photobucket account I set up years ago, but haven't looked at in at least 10 years. They're from the very first South East Bass Bash in Guildford in August 2007, organised by @obbm IIRC. It was a great day, made even better by the fact that I bought the lovely LPB Lakland DJ5 you can see in the photos from @P-T-Pwho very kindly delivered it to me at the Bash (now there's a bass I wish I'd never sold...). Does anyone else who was there have any photos or recollections from that day? If so, please share... 😊 Nik
  6. ***Now SOLD *** Hi Folks Another cab has come up that I would like to buy, so in order to fund it, I'm putting this brilliant Vanderkley 115MN6 4ohm cab up for sale. I'm asking for £SOLD for the cab, which comes with it's fitted Vanderkley cover worth £50. Both the cab and the cover are in superb condition. No trades on this I'm afraid. In haste, I've attached images of the cab with 3 different amps and my trusty G&L, but obviously, this is a for sale ad for the cab only. Selling because... Why am I selling such a brilliant, lightweight cab you might ask? Well, the answer is that because I already have a Mesa Walkabout 115 combo, I'm looking for either a 212 or 410 cab to pair with my Mesa Big Block 750... It's really that simple. Otherwise I wouldn't be thinking of moving this on at all as its a brilliant one cab solution, with a rich, deep and beautifully detailed sound whilst still being lightweight, powerful and having a small stage footprint. Other info... Try out is very welcome here in Potton, Central Bedfordshire with obligatory tea/coffee /biscuits etc. Although I'd rather not post, if it's a deal breaker, then yes I can package this up securely to be sent by tracked and insured courier at your additional cost. Equally, I'd be prepared to meet up within a 50 mile radius of where I live for a few extra shekels to help make a deal happen. Combined sale... If anyone would like to make me an sensible offer for this fabulous cab and the awesome Ashdown CTM100 that I'm also selling, then I'd be very open to that idea.. 👍😊 Any questions please ask away here, or send me a PM. Thanks for looking as ever.. Nik 😊 Tech Spec & blurb below.. Configuration: 1 x 15" + 6" custom designed Neodymium drivers Power: 600 Watts AES Impedance: 4 Ohms Freq. response: 39 Hz – 10 kHz Sensitivity: 99 dB 1W @ 1m Size: H x W x D, 59 x 54x 41cm Weight: 23 Kg / 50 lbs The NeoLite cabinets are loaded with the latest generation custom-made neodymium drivers. The drivers are absolute state-of-the-art; constructed from a cast aluminium frame, neodymium magnet assembly, unique coil and magnet cooling design, waterproof cone material, linear frequency response, high power- and sensitivity-ratings. The tweeters feature a custom-made filter with tweeter protection circuit and a high frequency attenuator on the back panel. Here you will also find two Neutrik® speakon/6.3mm jack-combo connectors linked parallel. These "high efficiency" cabinets are sealed airtight from the inside so the air will only enter or leave the cab through the tuned port-tube mounted on either the front or back or both. Each speaker cabinet is hand-made by Marc Vanderkley, using strong but lightweight void free birch and poplar plywood, dowel joint construction, internal bracing and is covered with high quality black carpet which will protect your cabinet for years to come. This is an ideal cabinet for the bass player looking for a balanced sound, with clear mid range and punchy, deep lows and clear, natural high end. A very light cabinet that works for almost any type of bass, including upright and any style of music.
  7. Lovely looking bass you have there @funkle I recently bought a Godin Shifter Classic 5 string bass and I am absolutely amazed at how good it is - build quality, finish, sound and playability. If yours is anything like that - and I know it will be - then someone's going to get a bargain here! GLWTS 😊
  8. Sunday evening BUMP for this fine example of valve wizardry! 😁 Sensible offers invited by the way....
  9. What a talented young musician.. If my kids could play an instrument to that technical level and show such an understanding of melody, harmony, rhythm etc, I'd be very proud of them for having invested their time and energy into one of the creative arts. I don't get why anyone would want to knock this guy at all for being a musician who's smart enough to earn a living from it. IMO, as musicians, need to celebrate what we all do to make the world a better place.
  10. Cheers Folks.. 👍 @Merton- saw this on my travels in Cambridge the other day and thought of you.. Didn't realise you had an Estate up this way... 😁
  11. Hi Folks, Over the last year or so, I've pretty much settled on using Mesa Boogie amps for my live work, and am using my Handbox R400 for recording. Which means that this lovely all-valve Ashdown CTM100 is just not being used, so I've decided to put it up here for sale at £525 or near offer. Currently, they're about £1200/£1300 new at places like PMT.. And they seem go for around the £800 mark on FleaBay, so I'm hoping this is a fair price for the Basschat community. So, to the amp itself... Bought s/h 2 years ago just after the first Lockdown, it's in very good working order, good external condition, sounds fantastic and is so tonally versatile that it puts a lot of solid-state amps I've used over the years to shame.. Sound It literally goes from that old-school Motown thump to out and out punchy, punky distortion with the twist of a few dials. And in terms of volume for gigging, IMO, it's 100 valve watts are more than capable of holding their own for pub gigs. It also runs happily at either 2, 4 or 8 ohms btw which means you can run a number of different cab combinations to suit your needs and your available gear. Tech spec etc Here's a link to the Ashdown website which has all the info you would need about the CTM100 and it's big brother, the CTM300: https://ashdownmusic.com/products/copy-of-ctm-300-head Weighs in at about 18kg which is a pretty easy carry for an all-valve head. I've included a screenshot of the tech spec in with the photos, but for any valve fetishists out there, just to sat that it has 3 pre-amp valves and two very nice KT88 output valves that light up and look pretty at night during gigs... 😁 Trades The only things I'd be interested in as far as trades go would be either: a) a decent quality 2x12, 4 ohm cab, or b) similar quality pair of 1x12, 8 ohm cabs. (with price adjustments where necessary of course). Being a valve amp, I'd prefer not to ship this for obvious reasons. So, it's collection only or a meet up within 50 miles of Potton, Central Bedfordshire. Very happy for anyone interested to come and check it out in person of course, where it can be tried through the Vanderkley 1156 cab that is shown in the pictures. Obligatory tea/coffee /biscuits supplied as per Basschat t&cs... I'll post some more pictures of the amp later. Any questions, please ask here or send me a PM. Thanks for looking... 👍😊 Cheers Nik
  12. Boob Dylan 😂 Most definitely not affronted btw! And your campfire experience sounds truly awful.... I just checked out Ornette Coleman's Harmolodics film on YouTube - wow, what an interesting guy and clearly a unique musician and composer. I will definitely be investigating his back catalogue further... 👍 It is as you say, different strokes etc, etc. I'll always love Joni Mitchell's music & lyrics, but there's plenty of room in my old brain for new artists, new music and different points of view... .. except where Jamiroquoi are concerned! But that's a whole other story. 😁
  13. Luxury! Of course, we had it tough.. .. All 300 of us lived inside a melted microchip, on the middle of a broken Class D circuit board, had to get up 24 semi-tones before we went to bed, push valve heft down a 500 mile motorway whilst being forced fed Tony Blackburn records through acid-coated IEMs...
  14. Sorry to say, but you're way too late - which isn't such a good look for a funk- obsessed bass player, Mr Smalls! 😜 That 'Joni love-in' you referred to has been going on for millions of people around the world for over 50 years now, and shows no sign of abating anytime soon..
  15. What is this 'three' of which you speak??? 😁
