Yep - the Handbox R400 is a dream..

I was in a covers band for about 10 years and probably did 200 plus gigs with them in that time. For most of that period, my main gigging rig was a Hughes and Kettner Bassbase 600 head, an SWR Triad cab, used with my passive BC Rich Eagle and a passive Fender Roscoe Beck V. Obviously, that was a heavy enough rig to lug around as it was, but I liked the sound my set up produced and so did the band. Anyway, after 10 years or so, the band changed direction and I joined another covers band.... It was all amicable, and we kept in touch as you do .. Then, 4 years later, they got in touch and asked me to help out with a few gigs as their bass player was unavailable. By this time, though my basses were the same, I'd changed my rig to a brilliant 90s Ampeg V4BH that I'd bought from @Beedster which came with a matching 115 svt. To that, I added the matching 210 svt. I know; different speaker sizes = a cardinal sin right! Anyway, i went along to do these gigs with the band and they were completely blown away with the sound of my heavy, class A/B, all valve, USA built Ampeg rig with its sinfully mismatched speaker sizes. I was still using the same basses and I wasn't playing the songs any better particularly. .. The only difference was the rig. Three other things of note in this story... The guitar player in the band co-owned a PA that he hired out and did front of house sound for, so he had what I'd call 'pretty good ears'. Their unavailable bass player at the time used a nice American made Fender Jazz through a Markbass LM111 head and 2 matching Markbass 115 cabs. The new band that I'd joined also loved my Ampeg rig compared to my older rig. I dont know what makes the difference here - I'm not technical in any way. But I do think that, as sentient human beings, we 'feel' things as well as 'know' things and, where music making is concerned for me, I choose to follow what i feel, over what I know.

Advice on mixing cabs with different ohmage
silverfoxnik replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Amps and Cabs
Hi Folks, Thanks for all your input, advice and comments. Based on all your feedback, I'm going to look at adding another 4 ohm 1156 to what I have already, which won't be a problem as I really like the sound of the cab. My neighbours are going to hate me (even more than they do now)... π Oh, and thanks for the very funny 'Ohmage is what you pay to The Ok' comment @Bill Fitzmaurice - that really made me chuckle! π -
Advice on mixing cabs with different ohmage
silverfoxnik replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Amps and Cabs
Thanks... Must admit, I do like a bit of trouser flappage where bass is concerned.. π -
Hello Basschat Folks, Seeking your advice please... I currently have 3 amps that comfortably run down to 2 ohms. So, I'm thinking it'd be good to add another Vanderkley cab to my existing Vanderkley 1156 4 ohm cab. It's not that I want more volume per se, it's just that I would like more choice for gigs and be able to use different cabs, or combination of cabs, in different settings. There's a few 210s around for sale at the moment - though more of those are 8 ohms cabs. There's also some 4 ohm cabs (210s and 1156) available. So.. my Luddite's question is, would I be better off buying a 4 ohm cab to pair with my existing 4 ohm cab, or would an 8 ohm cab pair up OK? Thanks in advance for your help.. Cheers Nik

Hope you enjoy the bass Paolo, and i look forward to seeing you at this year's South East Bass Bash in October! π Nik π

*** Now Traded *** Hi Folks, Heavily modified 70s MIJ Maya Jazz 'Stealth Bass' , with John Birch pick-ups For Sale. Back in January, I was scouring the internet as you do, looking for an unusual bass to buy, and this one caught my eye on Gumtree. It's a heavily modified 70s Maya Jazz Bass (which in itself is a good thing IMHO) that has been turned into a 'Stealth Bass', complete with a body refinish in a kind of satin black (that's almost impossible to photograph), and kitted out with all black hardware, which I think looks great with the maple neck and black block inlays. The most interesting of all those mods are the two John Birch pick ups, which are not only very unusual, but super-loud and sound great! The guy I bought it from who had all the work done, said he wanted the loudest, punchiest sounding pick-ups he could find, so he chose these... There seems to be a lot of mystique around John Birch pick-ups, and I have to confess, I don't know much of the background .. But these pick ups - set up in a simple V/V/T configuration - really are quite different sounding to me.. Too my ears, they're much more like a proper vintage Thunderbird than a Jazz Bass, but there's a fab, old-skool, Motown tone to be had too from the neck pick up and, when balanced so that the bridge pick is more prominent, the sound reminds me a little of my old Wal Pro IIE basses.. I'm not 100% sure, but I think these are John Birch Hyperflux pick-ups.. See here for more details.. https://www.seymourduncan.com/blog/swd/years-ago-i-heard-of-a-company-out-of-birmingham-england-that-made-guitars-and-many-models-of-pickups-who-was-it-and-what-kind-of-pickups-did-they-make-lewis-harley-isle-of-sky-scotland And there's more info on John Birch as a luthier, and his pick up designs, here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Birch_(luthier) (I've included a couple of photos of basses fitted with John Birch pick-ups for reference..) When I bought it, the bass played well and sounded really good to my ears, but I was convinced that the bridge was slightly out of alignment. So, I took it to our very own @gary mac, who did an excellent job of moving the bridge 2mm, and giving the bass a good set up with a set of D'Addario NYXL strings... The action is set now at what I would call medium height , and the neck plays really well.. However, the truss rod is working as it should, so a lower action could definitely be achieved on this bass if required. Weight is 4.6kg (10.14 lbs). As quirky and cool as this bass is, I find myself still defaulting to either my G&L SB1 or my BC Rich Eagle when playing, so this is just not getting used.. Hence why, as part of my gear clear out, I've decided to put it up for sale. Hard to put a value on this, but it owes me the best part of Β£400, so I'm offering it for sale at Now Traded. Try out welcome and collection preferred from Potton, near Sandy in Bedfordshire, but postage is possible at buyers expense and risk. Please note that I don't have a case for this, but I would ensure that it is very well packaged up for shipping. Having said that, I do have a nice tweed Thomann case that could be included at an additional cost.. Any questions, please ask here or send me a PM and I'll do my best to answer them. Thanks for looking.. π Nik

NOW SOLD Hi Folks What's that brilliant quote from the film Airplane by Lloyd Bridges - "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking"...? π Well, amidst the worsening economic crisis for decades, I have similarly - and stupidly - decided to pick this week to start having a bit of a gear clear out, because I need the space and have too much gear! So, here for sale is my SWR Triad Mk1 400 watt, 4 ohm bass cab that I've owned since buying it from @jhkon Basschat in early 2020. I'm looking for Β£130 or near offer for this cab, and am not after any trades, thanks. Worth pointing out immediately is that this is the Mk 1 version of the Triad, which are reputed to be loaded with Bag End drivers. Thanks to the pandemic, I've only gigged this cab a few times... And, bearing in mind this is probably around 20/25 years old, it's in pretty good condition - as can be seen in the photos, and it is in full working order. Soundwise, with itβs combination of a 15β driver, a 10β driver and 5β horn, the Triad does it all for me without being too clinical or too hi-fi IMO. It really is a great sounding cab! If you look on the internet, the jury's out about full-range bass cabs, but for me, I've found the Triad (and this is the third one I've owned since 2007) to be a very versatile cab, capable of delivering fantastic lows with quite an articulate mid-range and a sweet top end. I remember Alex Claber A/B-ing his Super 12T prototype against my first Triad cab about 10, 12 years ago, and Alex was pretty complimentary about the sound it makes, though it doesn't have the power handling of the Super 12T admittedly. Nevertheless, that was a very good endorsement from Alex I thought.. I have used this cab with a varity of excellent quality amps since owning it; Ampeg V4BH, Hughes & Kettner Bassbase 600, Ashdown CTM100, Mesa Titan V12, Eden Traveller 400 etc, etc, and in each case, it brings the very best out of the amps (and the various basses I've used it with).. Here's a review posted on Musician's Friend some years ago: "I've been gigging with the SWR Triad cabinet for exactly 10 years this month. It's been through all sorts of music to include acoustic world type music to heavy progressive. This is the clearest sounding cabinet I have ever heard. You will hear every nuance across the frequency spectrum." Spec from SWR: 4-ohm, 400W, 3-way speaker enclosure featuring a 15" woofer, 10" mid driver, and tweeter. The SWR Triad gets full range clarity like no other audio speaker system. 23"W x 27"H x 18.5"D. 80 lbs. * Bottom slot port * Spring-loaded rubber grip handles * Black Ozite carpeting with stack lock corners * Steel vibration-free grill * High-quality metal input panel with heavy-duty attenuator * 1/4" jacks in/out To state the very obvious, the Triad is not light; it weighs in at approx. 80lbs, so it's not the lightest cab that's ever been built... but because it has really strong handles on the side of it, I found that with a bit of practice and either a decent trolley or castors, it's been manageable for me. Just to clarify that I'm not looking for any trades on this thanks and that its only the cab that's for sale in this ad! Viewings, with lashings of Basschat tea/coffee /biscuits, are more than welcome in Potton, Bedfordshire, if you'd like to hear it first.. And although it wouldn't be my first choice, I'm also happy to ship it at your expense.. Any questions, please ask here or send me a PM Thanks for looking! π Nik
