Cardiff Bass bash this weekend, Sun 29th Nov
silverfoxnik replied to OldGit's topic in General Discussion
Good luck chaps! Hope you have a great day and that the weather is kind to you... -
Great looking rig! Must be a PIA to move around though... Good to see another West Sussex Basschatter by the way!

Loads of records have been made that were sped up when mixed & cut.. Another old favourite trick in the 60's was to make the song slightly louder from the Middle 8 onwards when doing the Cut, just to keep people's ears interested..
Hi have got myself a Tobias standard v and was wondering if anyone else plays one and what they think of it. Also what color is yours my one is a very cool metallic(ish) white cheers Vic
Had a 1990 Tobias Classic V a long time ago and that was lovely.. excellent construction, playability and sound.. Having said that, the Standard V models I've seen over the years have all looked pretty impressive as well, so I'm sure what you have just acquired is a pretty amazing bass!

Nice compact set-up.. That's a great looking Stingray! And the P/J configuration is always a winner IMO...
I just wanted to give a big thank you to everyone who's helped me out by buying my stuff, and the guys I've bought and traded with/from. It's proved that Ebay Suck, Cash is King, and Paypal is useful at times (mebby) and Bassist are all top people who don't get the credit they're owed. None of this would be possible without all the members, Mods, and of couse our fearless leader, Ped. It's been a big help having a community like this when my lifes been turned upside down, and I know others feel the same. This wouldn't happen in many demographics, and it proves that there's still some decent people left in this world! Big up yo' selves, you deserve it!
Agree with this 100% - Basschat is is a great community! -
After owning Alice Coopers Killer and Billion Dollar Babies albums years ago, I've just bought them again on CD, I knew they were good albums but I'd forgot how good. Dennis is incredible, they are true workbooks on how to play rock bass. Spotify Under my Wheels and Halo of Flies to see what I mean.
+1
for an idea of the sound, if you check Jonas Hellborg bass solo on youtube, there are plenty of things to be found with this type of bass.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh_Z1kt5iR4
Very interesting; Looks like a cross between a Spector and a Wal.
+1 Hellborg used a Wal for many years IIRC so maybe that influenced his design ideas.. Must say I'm suprised to see this back up for sale; looks like a very interesting bass. Good luck with it!

Typical! You wait for 1 Bass and 3 come along at once

Onboard electronics? Any other non-believers here?
silverfoxnik replied to Moos3h's topic in Bass Guitars
There is always a danger of over-using e.q. IMO. If your amp has a good e.q. facility and so does your bass, then there's potential to overdo it.. From my experience of working in recording studios at various times over the years, the art of getting a good sound from any instrument is in capturing the real sound of the instrument and then enhancing it if you need to with e.q. and/or effects.. I think that is also true in a live situation, though there are more complex factors at work, such as the acoustics in a room etc, etc. There are exceptions of course; where you might be using e.q. to radically alter the sound you get from a bass for example.. But in most cases I can recall, too much e.q. actually makes things sound 'smaller' and 'thinner' in a mix (for want of any better adjectives), not bigger. -
Many thanks Bryan!!
Oh my. I've just been Alembic:ed. Thanks to Basschat and a very nice Belgian Gentleman, I have this wonderful Alembic MK5 to fool around with to my hearts content. I'm totally floored with its sound and how well it plays! Darn, I'm a lucky guy!
That's amazing!! You are indeed 'a lucky guy'.. which may qualify as the understatement of the year!!

Hi Folks, Just sold a GK700RB head to Bryan (BBass) who was a pleasure to deal with throughout and, though he's new to Basschat and this was his first transaction, I'm pretty sure it won't be his last!! So if you do have to deal with Bryan in the future, you can definitely do so in confidence! Thanks Bryan - hope to see you around on BC more often and enjoy the amp! Nik

Thanks Al - will do.. And you too!
I have recently dealt with Nik for his Kay bass. Sadly, despite good packing on his behalf, the couriers managed to damage it resulting in a hefty bill for its repair. Nik has been superb in arranging a claim under the insurance and although we're still awaiting the outcome, I can't fault him at all and am so glad I bought the bass from someone so honest, helpful and friendly! His communication throughout has also been excellent. Deffo recommended and a very positive experience, regardless of the heavy-handed fools responsible for the damage! Cheers, James
Thanks James! The feeling is mutual, as it's always a pleasure dealing with the brilliant people on here like your good self.. In stark contrast however, to the idiots in courier companies like Interparcel who for some reason can't understand when it says 'FRAGILE' on a parcel!
I managed to see the band, Mamas Gun playing in Bristol on Thursday night and it was the first time in ages that a band has had me hooked from the first bar. They also look great, which is all part of show biz, I know but they looked absolutely right for what they were playing. Check them out here if you haven't already. I couldn't believe these guys had stayed under my radar; it's melodic groove based soul/funk with vocals that are very reminiscent of The Stylistics, Marvin Gaye, The temps, The Four Tops etc. The bassist and drummer were fantastic and grooved as well as anyone I heard. The bassist is Rex Horan, I'd not heard of him before but chatting to him afterward he seems like a really great guy and is a self-confessed gear nut. He has a really ballsy sound and his style reminded me of Jerry Jemmott, Stuart Zender, George Porter Jnr and a few others. If you get the chance to see them, go; their stage show is fabulous and the moves will make you grin. I was feeling a bit grumpy and down in the dumps on Thursday but this lot turned me round and made it a great day in the end.
Both Rex & the drummer, Jack Pollitt played together some years ago with a female artist called Sam Obernik if I recall correctly.. And before that Jack played for a guy I used to manage back in the late 90's called Simon Warner who was signed to One Little Indian.. Rex & Jack are both great players and it's really nice to see what they're up to these days.. So thanks for posting it up here Sean - that's made my day!
I hope your all jealous!! lol
Great story and yes, very jealous! You are a lucky man on both counts.. I think we need a new 'unoffical' Basschat policy that barrs you from ever trying to sell or trade that bass here on BC.. It has to be a keeper for life!

Every now and again, something happens here on Basschat that I know will stick in my memory for a long time and this little story is one of them.. It's what makes the place so great IMO! So.. A couple of weeks ago I decided that I'd try and sell my USA Fender Jazz 5 Deluxe and noticed that Alan was looking for a 34" 5 string bass, so I sent him a PM to see if he might be interested. A couple of PMs later, we'd worked out that Alan was really interested in trying my Fender and I was really interested in trying Al's Sandberg JJ 5 (even though it is a 35" scale which I don't normally feel comfortable with) with a view to doing a trade. The only problem was, how to try the basses out, as I'm on the south coast near Brighton and Al is studying music and playing in a great band in Manchester (my hometown funnily enough). But a 600 mile round trip is no obstacle where Al is concerned as he's that dedicated to his bass playing and all that goes with it, so he decided to travel down last Saturday by train, leaving Manchester at 'stupid o'clock' in the morning, and he duly arrived in Littlehampton at about midday. Anyway, to cut what could be a very long story short, after about 4 hours of trying out the different basses, chatting about all sorts of music-related stuff and Al giving me a free bass theory lesson, we decided to trade the two basses... which is a decision I'm really happy about because I just love the sound of the Sandberg 5 and, now it's been set up to suit me, it's a great bass to play. Happily, the Fender 5 is working out great for Al as well...so all is good! To sum up; Al is a phenomenally good musician and a fantastically inventive bass player as well as being a really good person to meet and deal with.. So I wanted to post this feedback for him here to thank him for going to all that trouble & effort last week and also to recommend him highly to everyone else on Basschat! Cheers Al - hope 'it's all good'! Nik

Just sold an old Kay Bass to James and I have to say he's been brilliant to deal with! Especially as the bass arrived with damage to it, caused by some careless barstewards at Interparcel.. Given the situation, James has been very helpful in getting a claim together (supplying photos etc) and has also been very understanding & patient! All in all, dealing with excellent people here on Basschat like James makes even these situations worth it..so, I can't recommend James highly enough! Thanks again James Nik
