I bought a wounderful RB5 from Nik. In my time of contact with him, i had the possibility to get an idea of how nice this guy must be. Nik is very polite and kind, did a great job with the shipping of the bass and even through some stormy winds, he is the kind of person you would like to deal with Thanks again for all Nik!
Thanks Maurice!! The feeling is mutual.. it was a pleasure dealing with you and I'm very glad you are happy with the bass! Nik
Also known as the placebo Effect
Not really though Chris, because I am able to tell the difference between the playability of my own set ups and those done for me.. For example, I recently acquired a new Roscoe Beck V from Happy Jack (having sold my other one) and it needed setting up (i) to suit my playing style and (ii) because the intonation was out. So I tried doing it at first and whilst I could make any number of alterations to the bridge (saddle height, intonation etc) I was reluctant to make the necessary adjustment to the truss rod myself. So, I took it to Graham Wheeler who did the whole thing for me and now it feels just right; intonation is spot-on, the string height is as I like it and also, the neck relief is as it should be.. And as well as being happy with the set-up, I can also now rest assured that everything on the bass is working as it should be and that there are no issues with the neck, which is so important. My guess is that you guys just like to tinker around with this stuff because you're either control freaks with lots of unresolved bass OCD issues and/or you've spent your bass maintenance budget on more gear!! (insert the words 'kettle', 'pot' and 'black' here...)
Maybe we should have some kind of debate / Q&A on set-up with bunch of us that do our own set-ups offering our personal views on how to do it. You obviously do it differently to me because by the time I'd have got a bass sorted you'd have already sold it! Alex
Classic!! Back on topic..the idea of a debate / Q&A would be really good but possibly with a good luthier in attendance as well. What do you think? Btw Alex, I would say that you have the skills & confidence and technical ability to do your own set-ups which is brilliant! But for many of us who lack those qualities, it's really important to find a good luthier who you trust with your basses and also, alongside that, to try to learn as much as possible so maybe one day you might contemplate doing your own set-ups by yourself.. I find I can do my own set-ups but it takes me ages and I'm never confident in the results. Whereas, I'm happier when I it's done for me by someone whom I trust.
Yeah that would interest me, my $$ could probably do with a setup, though it also depends how much this person would be charging.
Last year, we had Joe White and he charged £50 for a set-up (which was reduced for the Bash from his normal rate of £80!).. We could ask Joe again though there were murmerings that he was a bit on the expensive side.. I have also asked my local luthier, Graham Wheeler and he charges £35 which is pretty reasonable IMO - especially as his work is very, very good! Joe is actually based in Surry anyway so it wasn't too much of a trek for him to get to last year's Bash. However, if Graham were to do this year's Bash he would have to travel up from the Worthing area near me, so I think he'd want to have an idea that there are enough people interested for it to be worth his while, which is why I'm trying to gauge interest.. Btw, if anyone would like to recommend somebody else who is perhaps more local to the Bash, then that would also be very helpful?
-
Hi Folks Quick question: how many of you would like to have someone doing set-ups at the Bash? We have a couple of good people in mind but need to gauge strength of interest first before confirming... Thanks Nik
I love that wal and lakland. You are a man of taste mingled with luck.
Thanks! I haven't always felt lucky when it comes to basses but I suppose it's all relative, isn't it?

That's a great looking rig! And you have one of the 'hybrid' model Wals too... fabulous!!

Had the pleasure of meeting up with Jack last week to buy his Roscoe Beck V.. For those who don't know, Jack is an absolute gent and his enthusiasm for all things bass is fantastic! We spent so long chatting and discussing gear that 'Mrs Happy Jack' began to get a bit worried... So, just to echo what others have already said about Jack being a great person to deal with and to say thanks Jack for the bass.. Look forward to seeing you at the SE Bash if not before, Nik
Fantastic bass! I used to own a 5 string version and regret selling it very much. I would love one again... And yes the neck really is as thin and fast as stated, although until you play it, its hard to believe its that good!
+1 I had the 5 string of this too and it was very good.. Stupidly sold it to fund something else which of course, I no longer have! Good luck with the sale!
That's why the Alembic went. Broke my heart as I'd waited 20-odd years to have one built. Still, there's plenty worse than me; haven't been faced with surgery yet so something is still working. I can still bash it out onstage; it's the next few days that are the killer!
That's a real shame.. but good to always see the positive side!

Just a thought about Joe White.. He did do Stingrayfan's G&L and it did have to be re-done.. Having said that, I think he did quite a few other set-ups though and AKAIK, they were ok...

Played a real beauty on Friday that belongs to Happy Jack! Apparently it's one of the first Shuker ever made and hence, has an extra special value to it. But it's playability and tonal options were superb, as was the craftsmanship!
-
Cheers guys! I thought you were a 100% Staus man OTPJ?? Surely no room for a Wal in that set up.... Shaun - just reading 'spinal disc prolapses' feels painful, so I can only imagine what it must actually be like.. I'm amazed that you can still play at all with a bass around your shoulders?? Gus - Bernard Edwards used an Eagle for a while, which says it all IMO!
bass still available!.............
That's very surprising as it's a great looking bass! Having played one like this a couple of years ago, and compared it at the time to one of the USA models that was there, it really is great value for money..as well as being a very versatile and great sounding bass. Good luck with the sale!
