1.
Thanks Nik I'm having trouble spotting a specific list about buying/selling, can you point it out to me ? Otherwise I'll just add notes to the big list (attendees+gear) Andy
Hi Andy You're absolutely right! Hang on.... Nik
 2. That's a very cool looking bass!
 3.
You = Me
Then all's right with the world this fine sunday afternoon....
 4.
i apologise for my close minded rant...its never a good idea to post anything after you have been out for the evening....i really like some of Fleas playing..my comments were a little immature..
No need to apologise at all.. Your rant has sparked of some posts that make for really interesting reading, so as far as I'm concerned, it's been quite productive! Back on topic, I agree with whoever said it needn't be mutually exclusive.. There's more than enough room for everyone and both Flea and VW have been hugely influential.. After all, how many of us can say that?
 5.
Never been to one of these before, but planning on this one, and bringing some of my gear. However I've got little idea of the format, other than the idea being to get an idea of other peoples gear. So can somebody fill me in ? Does everyone bring gear, or is there a strong contingent of lookers only ? Do you just set up in your own area and stay put, or do people move around a lot leaving their gear on display ? And are there opportunities for trading and buying/selling ? FWIW, I'm thinking of bring my Markbass combo (1x12) , together with Status Eclipse 5 Ltd (possible trader), Rob Allen Deep 5 (to show it off) and if there's anyones interested in seeing it, my BSX Allegro upright. If there no interest, I'll bring something else more easily transportable, Status S1 fretless 5 (unlined, a beauty and a keeper) Oh, and I'll update the list once I know more about the format and I've firmed up what I'm bringing. Andy
Hi Andy Great - it'll be good to see you there! The format is what you want it to be really; people bring their gear if they want to and if you do, find a space and set up (bring an extension lead btw). You can move around to see who else is there, look at a huge range of gear and also try out the Workshops, The Quiet Room and The Jamming Room. I have always left my gear on display at previous Bashes and moved around a lot, because that's what's good about everyone getting together IMO. And yes, there are opportunities for trading and buying & selling.. In fact, there's a post on this thread that I'm sure will fill up this week with lists of what people are bringing along for that very purpose.. I'm definitely interested in seeing your Rob Allen Deep 5 and I'm sure most of what you've mentioned above will be of interest to other Basschatters!! Hope that helps, Nik
 6. Great! How long till the JO5 arrives..?
 7. I'm definitely going.. Went last year and saw Herbies Flowers and it was fantastic! Franc O'Shea was good too...
 8.
yep, had to be locked inside a venue for our own safety as there was a riot going on outside. This was a venue outside of Milton Keynes a few years ago. Wolverton I think.
Sounds pretty scary!! We played at Horatio's Bar on Brighton Pier a couple of years ago and there's a karaoke bar next door which is known for being full of very tuneless people who's real talent is boozing.. Two very pissed guys came into the bar after their karaoke performance and started hassling us from the minute we started playing. They kept asking for particular songs, asking to have a go on the drums, the guitar, bass etc, etc.. As well as really winding us up, their constant interjections started to wind the rest of the audience up as well. Even though they tried to use our gear during the break without asking us, we somehow managed to get through to the last few songs without anything kicking off...Until one of the two guys picked up our guitarists spare guitar, fell backwards and banged into the amp!! Then all hell broke loose; our keyboard player & guitarist were fighting one of the two guys, members of the audience came up and started rucking with the other guy - it was mayhem! The keyboards went over, one side of the PA fell, a cigarette machine in the corner also went over... Funniest bit was when our guitarist's missus got involved.. In the end, three security blokes finally intervened and kicked the two tw*ts out and we resumed and somehow finished the gig, even playing an extra half-hour at the manager's request and for some extra cash! Looking back, it was something that could have been avoided if the security guys had got involved earlier.. Not surprisingly, we've not been back since!
 9.
Oh, I won't offer a free slap lesson then
Nor me!!
 10.
Happy to throw in an as-new bass tab book for RATM's first album and Standing in the Shadows of Motown. Both are mint condition. Edit: The Standing In ... has a small bend in front cover which is only noticed if you scrutinise. Its still a nice thing to have and has both CDs (unplayed) in the inside cover. Silverfoxnik, let me know if you only want completely mint things in raffle and I will withdraw this. The RATM is definitely as-new.
Hi Clarky, Thanks for the offer, that's great! No - IMO contributions for the Raffle don't have to be mint condition (though that helps), just something that will be of use and/or interest to fellow bassists and which will encourage them to buy tickets! Cheers Nik
 11.
No, far from it. In fact it often makes me wonder on here when folks are on about changing their 'sound' or 'tone', how much of it could be done by careful and strategically changing strings. Certainly in my limited experience you can make considerable and noticeable changes with very subtle changes here and there. I now only make one small change at a time and let it settle before moving to alter others......
Hi Bob, Amazingly, with your encouragement I have managed to solve it!! Thinking about what you'd said, I decided to set the bass up from scratch, checking each string's intonation and action as well as looking at the pick up height as well... And whilst doing that I noticed that the Gotoh bridge on the RBVs has an extra adjustment that you can make which allows you to tweak the string spacing. So I looked at each string and noticed that the B-string was out of line as it it crossed over the saddle and down into the hole that goes throgh the body of the bass! Which in effect meant it had quite a twist to it, causing it to sound quite vague and not intonate properly. Having straightened it up it now sounds really distinct and clear and is in tune right up the neck, so I'm really happy!! Thanks for the help... Nik
Nik, Yes it does make sense, and whilst it is only very slight and subtle differences, tensions may vary and this is why we have to set up (or at least check it ) whenever we change string makes or gauges.
Thanks; at least I'm not going mad then...
 15. Chris - it might be worth you posting this in the actual SE bash thread?
 16.
I'm a total disciple I'm afraid. Rubber Soul, Revolver, Pepper, The White, Abbey Road and most of Let it Be have some of the most righteous basslines EVER recorded. I bought Abbey Road remastered last week, the basslines on that album are incredible, on Something, oh dear, totally beautiful. Macca = Legend.
+1

 18. Can anyone interested in having a set-up done on the day please add their name to this list, thanks? "Just to say that Graham Wheeler has kindly offered to come and do set-ups on the day and talk about how he approaches doing them. He's not so keen on doing a talk to a large group of people at once but is really happy to talk to people who have any particular questions.. The charge for a set-up will be £35 and if you are planning on having one done, please remember to bring your own choice of strings with you on the day!! To get the ball rolling and so Graham knows what amount of work he can expect, it'd be good if people could list their names here or PM me, thanks:" Set-Ups List: 01. 20. Just to say that we have some goodies coming from Hartke which is really cool, so thanks to them in advance for the support! As soon as I know what they are, I'll post details up here..
 21. Hi Folks, Bought a GK head from Graeme in July and thanks to Parcelfarce, it arrived with one of the pots broken off! To cut the long story down.. Graeme was a real star in following up a claim against ParcelFarce and they eventually paid out (thankfully).. So, the amp is now being fixed.. Amazingly, my repair chappie actually found 3 more pots that were broken, so not good!! Anyway, I just want to thank Graeme for all his help with everthing, great communications and all round support with the problem! I can definitely recommend him to all here on Basschat as someone to deal with in total confidence.. Absolutely brilliant! Thanks Graeme, Nik
 22.
Nik, Not sure what you mean by playability.....? you appear to have two issues (unless I'm mistaken). 1. Tension. 2. Tone. So both of these will vary widely with differing strings and even differing gauges of the same string. Have you tried it in the std set up that Fender recommend or that they come supplied with? That's a good starting point (use the same gauge initially and different makes) and work from there using your experience of the kind of tone that you want from it to select the strings. Then when you have the make and type of string you want then start approaching differing gauges to get one that suits both your tone requirement and feel. Trying to change all in one go gives way to many variables to illicit a plan of what's changed and how its affected your playing. If that helps, that's how I approached my PRSs and it worked for me.
Thanks Bob; that makes a lot of sense.. Good question about what exactly do I mean by 'playability'?? Well, to me it simply means the way a bass feels when you play it.. For example, I've tried 2 different makes of strings before on a bass and though they're the same gauge, the feel of the bass is radically different due to the different string types.. Why that is I don't know?? Hope that makes sense... Nik
 23.
Not sure why you think it must be the strings unless you have heard that bass sound great with the B string before. Personally, I can't chop and change between make and guages and I would expect any new string to sound ok... It might not feel the best..but sound-wise it should give a good defintion. If it didn't, I'd be looking at the fact that the B on that bass isn't so great and there is only so much you can do in set-up to compensate... I accept that QA is so much better than it used to be but that doesn't mean you can't get these problems any more... I am also assuming the main problem is the sound..?
Thanks for the reply.. It's a number of things actually.. When I got this new RBV, I tried an old B string on it that I had lying around (which I don't know the make of because it came on another long-since-gone 5 string I had) and it sounded very solid & clear and stayed in tune.. However, it was very dead sounding so I put on a new set of EBS strings only to discover the B string didn't sound so good... Then tried a new B string from another EBS set and that was better, but even so, it's still not as good as that old B string I tried originally and not as good as the EBS strings on my other RBV (sorry this is so long winded an explanation).. Sometimes, string quality does vary so it could be that and I've also wondered if it might be things like the way the B string sits in the saddle on the bridge or across the nut? But I might try some completely different strings now and see what happens, starting with some Newtone ones..
 24.
I will! Alex
Cool!
 25. Hi Folks I'm having a problem finding the right set of strings to use with my Roscoe Beck V at the moment. I've been using EBS Northern Lights (.45-.128) but they don't seem to suit this RBV like they did on the last RBV I had for some reason.. On the last RBV, the B string was nice and solid; on this one (using the same make & gauge of strings), it's not so good... After playing around with string height, pick up height etc, I've come to the conclusion that it must be the strings. I tried some Sandberg strings and they were not a good match either, so I'm just wondering how much difference string make, type gauge etc makes to the sound and playability of a bass? Nik
