1. Hi Folks, Well; it's been a while and just because we've got nothing better to do (again), we thought we'd set up another Basschat South East Bash on Saturday 10 October 2009 for your enjoyment!! Here's all the details: Date: Saturday 10 October 2009 Time: 10am - 6pm (we originally said 11am but we will now be ready to start from 10am) Venue: Jubilee High School, Surrey, School Lane, Addlestone, Surrey KT15 1TE Venue link: Jubilee High School Website Map link: MAP LINK Format: 1 x general area to set up your gear, plus 1 x workshop area with workshops through the day (details tbc), plus cafeteria Cost: £10 for the day Charities: We will donate any profits from the day to these 4 worthy causes: UPDATE on the charities for the Bash: Any profits from the day will be donated as follows: 1. The Prostate Cancer Charity (40%) 2. The Orpheus Centre (40%) 3. African Children's Choir (10%) 4. The Blue Cross (10%) For anyone who wants more details about the amazing work of these charities, have a look below: The Prostate Cancer Charity The Orpheus Centre The African Children's Choir The Blue Cross We aim to have some great workshops on the day, pretty much as we did last year but this time, we'll have a lot more space which should help! For example, the entrance foyer at the venue is about the same amount of space we had at the Holiday Inn last year. And we have the main theatre and a cafeteria area at our disposal as well, which gives us a lot of options! There will be refreshments available on the day for a small charge of course which will help increase the profits and keep everyone happy! It's going to cost £185 for the hire of the venue plus we've been advised to take out some public liability insurance cover (which we will do) therefore, we need to charge £10 per head entrance fee to cover those cost. And, like last year, all profits will be donated to good causes so not only will we have a fabulous day 'navel gazing' as only bass players can, but we will be raising funds for good causes.. in particular Baschat itself, which is why we're all here in the first place talking about this stuff! Other details such as which rooms/spaces will be used for what function etc, masterclasses, raffles etc, will be added over the next few weeks. Hope lots of you can come because it's that which'll make it a great day! What would be really helpful from everyone who's interested in partcipating on the day is: 1. Donations of raffle prizes 2. Ideas/requests for the workshops 3. Volunteers to help out on the day (if needs be) Basically, we've come up with a format based on last year's event but there's no reason why we can't expand on it either.. So all practical ideas/offers welcome! What'd be good now is to use this thread to get an idea of who's coming and what gear they'll be bringing..So, to get the ball rolling: UPDATED LIST: 01. 2. BUMP for edit... All gone pretty much now except for the FREE Radial Bigshot manual...
  3.
Regardless of the spacing, while it's true that the neck might feel a tad wide at first touch, the asymmetrical neck profile really makes it a breeze to play. IMO the RB5 is the best fiver Fender ever put out, and with the added Aguilar you have my mouth watering for a backup to mine.
+1
  4.
Yep, the same bass - I love the beginning of Don't Rush, but aside from Lizzy (which we do in the band but with a different arrangement), I haven't listened to those recordings in a while. New strings, straight into the desk. Yummy P
Just checking... it sounds great!!
  5. Hope it all goes well for you Mark! It's quite a courageous thing to do IMO, so I hope that you get out of it what you want and it brings you back to bass playing in a year or so totally revitalised.. Look forward to seeing you back on Basschat next year
  6. A friend of mine is looking for a Triad Stu, so I'll point him in your direction.
  7.
I used to want one of these yonks ago - classic bass of its time - good luck mate
+1 Fabulous old bass...good luck with the sale!
  8. Very nice indeed! Is that Kinal the one eubassix was selling recently?
  9.
Ya Not Wrong There....... But it's now £600 Collected...
That's unbelievable!!!
  10.
I really shouldn't, but I am interested in this - however one thing worries me a touch about the Brass nut, as from the pics it looks like there are barely any slots in it and the strings are sort of sitting on top. Is this the case? Thanks! James
Hi James No, it's not the case. The grooves for the strings to sit in are very well defined.. Here's a couple of pictures which I hope will show you what it's like: Thanks for the other positive comments guys! Nik
  11.
what's the balance like with a body that small? I'm trying to find reasons to not spend more of my student loan
It's not that bad actually, but then I use a Wal Pro which is famously neck-heavy, so I'm probably not the best person to ask! Hold on... Just tried it again; the bass does tend to have a little bit of neck dive but the easy way to counter that would be to move the position of the strap pin/button.. Hope that helps!
  12. BUMP for edit... All gone pretty much now except for the Fender strap...
  13.
I bought a single-channel MkIII head for £50, off a BCer a few months back, just as a stopgap. It's only meant to be 150 watts & I thought it would do for practice etc until I got something beefier. 3 months on and I'm not in any way motivated to "upgrade" - it's a loud (read really f*cking loud) robust, reliable little brute, and sounds the business through my old Peavey 1x15 Black Widow box - I honestly think they were separated at birth. These are, in their way, a bit like Westone basses, which are being discussed elsewhere - never flavour of the month but well-made, perform well, bomb-proof & last for ever. Look how many are still going strong, 30-odd years on. Jon.
+1 It is amazing how much of this stuff is still going strong.. even more so when you consider these heads were pretty much a standard piece of kit for bass players in so many rehearsal rooms across the country 25 years ago.. If they can survive that kind of punishment, then they can pretty much cope with anything!
  14.
That's good to hear about the action. These really are pretty basses with some lovely detailing, like the triple dot brass inlays on the fretboard. This is a very good price too IMO - I sold mine for about twice that, high action an' all! J.
Thanks Jon!
  15.
I've got the Mk VI - great sound and as you say, loud as hell, especially at 2 Ohms!
+1 I always remember the first gig I did with my band 3 years ago and I had one of these heads plus an unbranded 1x15 cab and our guitarist (who's very much into his 'gear' and knows his stuff) looked at my set up as if to say 'you're joking' aren't you, especially as the previous bass player had a Little Mark head! To be fair to him, afterwards, he came up to me and complimented me on the sound, which was pretty good of him!
  16.
Probably won't come as any great surprise when I say I've had one of these - quite nice it was too. Not Japanese - these are actually Korean, made by Cort around 1980, and about as good quality as comparable JapCrap. Probably the worst problem with mine was an unadjustably high action, down to the fretboard basically being so low it was impossible to lower the saddles far enough. Obviously the through neck means you can't shim it, so the only fix would have been to lower the whole bridge by routing underneath it. It did look & sound good, though, and I'd like to pick up another one day. Regrettably it won't be this one - an hour or two ago I impulsively pulled the trigger on a Westbury Track II project. Will I ever learn? Will I 'eck as like. Jon.
And no, not a suprise! Good luck with the Westone project.. In the meantime, thanks for stopping by Jon; I was hoping you'd be able to help fill in some detail on the history & background of these basses.. Luckily, the action on this one is pretty good thankfully and there's still quite a lot of play left in the saddles to take it down even further if required. I agree - they do sound quite good and I've always liked a P/J pick up configuration personally...
  17. SOLD Hi Folks, Well, my summer clearout continues and up for sale is this 1978 Peavey Mark III head which I bought from barneyg42 in May. As I've said many times on Basschat, I really rate these old Peavey heads ( I have two of them as you can see below) though they are very, very unfashionable and very heavy!! But there's a real old-skool charm to them in my opinion and if like me, you like to have two channels for different basses in gig situations and you like a warmer, less 'hi-fi' tone, , then these are just great for achieving that on a budget! Here's what barneyg had to say about this amp in particular.. Big old Peavey lump in great working order and fantastic condition, sounds as loud as it looks. According to the manual (have got a photocopy) it's 210watt 4ohms and 300watt 2ohms although the volume seems to far exceed these specs. Has a lot of tone shaping, 2 channels, one of which has parametric mid and the other standard bass middle treble plus the 6-band graphic which can be switched in or out of either channel. Also has compression switch which lights up when clipping is happening although it has such good headroom I've never seen it kick in! Active/passive inputs on both channels plus it also comes with the Automix A/B and combiner foot switch. Plug into the Automix input and you can switch channels or even combine the two. Looking at the back it looks to be a converted US model but this makes no difference to the sound at all, silent operation. Can also be bi-amped. I've had this since about August last year and in my hands it has only been rehearsed once a week and the usual bedroom noodling! Have moved on to Hartke hence the sale. Retro but functional. Having two channels is a hoot. You can even overdrive one and blend the master on it in to grunge it up a bit. I had it set up for a fretless and a five string and one click on the footswitch and the sound is changed. I was testing it out earlier today whilst setting up to take the photos and I tried it running both channels simultaneously, and that sounded absolutely monstrous with my Fender Jazz V string.. Plenty of power and lots of tonal options too. To be fair though, I think it was bass_ferret who said that Peavey amps always sound like a Peavey and I guess that's kind of true..but maybe that's not such a bad thing if you like that sound (which I do).. By the way, it puts out 210 watts at 4 ohms and 300 watts at 2 ohms but i'm not sure what it does at 8 ohms tbh? You can see here below the modification that barney was referring to.. And you can also see this 1978 Mark III model next to the 1982 Mark IV model that I'll be keeping and, in fact, this one is in much better condition! Anyway, suffice to say that I hope this will appeal to someone here and if not, then it'll be put up for auction on Evil Bay which would be a shame as it'd be nice to see this stay within the BC family.. Any questions, please feel free to send me a PM or ask away here and I'll do my best to answer them.. This is heavy, so postage isn't really an economic option but if required, I will be more than happy to ship it! Oh, and if you'd like to come and hear it in action, then please do.. Thanks for looking! Nik
  18.
Thanks Nik. AFAIK, the Aguilar has just dropped in to replace the passive tone controls. All the other knobs/switches do exactly what they're supposed to. So two tone controls have been replaced by a mid-boost/cut and a stacked treble & bass boost/cut. The guy I got it from (someone I trust) told me that the mod was completely reversible, requiring only a replacement pickguard - though I'll be damned if I can see why!
Thanks very much Jack; most intruiging... BTW, sorry missed your PM earlier about the bright box.. will PM you in the morning!
  19. *** SOLD *** Thanks for the interest! Hi Folks Price now reduced to £70.00 + p&p Am having a real clear out at the moment and working on improving my rig, so as a result I have this old but good Kay Bass for sale if anyone's interested.. Not exactly sure how old it is but my guess would be 1980's?? This is the second one of these basses I've owned over the last few years.. I had one 3 years ago and sold it; regretted it and then bought this one recently on Ebay for £77.. As with a lot of these impulse Ebay purchases, it's done with the best of intentions (or so I tell myself)..you know, do a bit of restoration work, change the pick ups, etc, etc.. But in all honesty, I very rarely get around to doing that sort of stuff and I should really know better by now! Having said that about my own failings, the bass itself isn't too bad and I think it would be worth doing the work to be honest because the basic build quality is pretty good! So, if someone fancies a bit of a project, there's a potentially very nice little bass in the offing for not much money.. On the upside, the bass has had a brass nut fitted and the inlays on the neck are quite a good feature, plus the through neck design certainly adds to the tone and sustain... On the downside, the pick ups aren't original and it could do with a decent set-up, plus it was at one time, completely painted over in pink!! Though I'm happy to say that the last owner restored it to this natural finish, which is quite pleasing to my eye at least.. It actually sounds pretty good - quite thumpy and P-Bass like at one end of the scale and quite clangy and punky at the other end, when you mix in both pick ups! One thing it could definitely benefit from though, is some shielding, as the bridge pick up is quite noisy! One thing to point out is that it is NOT a short-scale bass; it is definitely 34" scale! However, the body is quite small which makes it look and feel like a short-scale bass.. I'm looking to get back what I paid for it really which was about £90 including the postage, so £75 + p&p would be fine!! I'm happy to ship it to anywhere really and though it hasn't got a gig bag or case, I will make sure it is very well packed for the journey! Of course, anyone more local who's interested is very welcome to come and try it first.. Any questions, please send me a PM or ask away here and I'll do my best to answer them.. Thanks for looking ! Nik
  20. Lovely basses Jack!! Good luck with the sales.. I'm very interested in the work that has been done to the Roscoe Beck..do the original electronics still work as designed?
