Probably won't come as any great surprise when I say I've had one of these - quite nice it was too. Not Japanese - these are actually Korean, made by Cort around 1980, and about as good quality as comparable JapCrap. Probably the worst problem with mine was an unadjustably high action, down to the fretboard basically being so low it was impossible to lower the saddles far enough. Obviously the through neck means you can't shim it, so the only fix would have been to lower the whole bridge by routing underneath it. It did look & sound good, though, and I'd like to pick up another one day. Regrettably it won't be this one - an hour or two ago I impulsively pulled the trigger on a Westbury Track II project. Will I ever learn? Will I 'eck as like. Jon.
And no, not a suprise! Good luck with the Westone project.. In the meantime, thanks for stopping by Jon; I was hoping you'd be able to help fill in some detail on the history & background of these basses.. Luckily, the action on this one is pretty good thankfully and there's still quite a lot of play left in the saddles to take it down even further if required. I agree - they do sound quite good and I've always liked a P/J pick up configuration personally...

SOLD Hi Folks, Well, my summer clearout continues and up for sale is this 1978 Peavey Mark III head which I bought from barneyg42 in May. As I've said many times on Basschat, I really rate these old Peavey heads ( I have two of them as you can see below) though they are very, very unfashionable and very heavy!! But there's a real old-skool charm to them in my opinion and if like me, you like to have two channels for different basses in gig situations and you like a warmer, less 'hi-fi' tone, , then these are just great for achieving that on a budget! Here's what barneyg had to say about this amp in particular.. Big old Peavey lump in great working order and fantastic condition, sounds as loud as it looks. According to the manual (have got a photocopy) it's 210watt 4ohms and 300watt 2ohms although the volume seems to far exceed these specs. Has a lot of tone shaping, 2 channels, one of which has parametric mid and the other standard bass middle treble plus the 6-band graphic which can be switched in or out of either channel. Also has compression switch which lights up when clipping is happening although it has such good headroom I've never seen it kick in! Active/passive inputs on both channels plus it also comes with the Automix A/B and combiner foot switch. Plug into the Automix input and you can switch channels or even combine the two. Looking at the back it looks to be a converted US model but this makes no difference to the sound at all, silent operation. Can also be bi-amped. I've had this since about August last year and in my hands it has only been rehearsed once a week and the usual bedroom noodling! Have moved on to Hartke hence the sale. Retro but functional. Having two channels is a hoot. You can even overdrive one and blend the master on it in to grunge it up a bit. I had it set up for a fretless and a five string and one click on the footswitch and the sound is changed. I was testing it out earlier today whilst setting up to take the photos and I tried it running both channels simultaneously, and that sounded absolutely monstrous with my Fender Jazz V string.. Plenty of power and lots of tonal options too. To be fair though, I think it was bass_ferret who said that Peavey amps always sound like a Peavey and I guess that's kind of true..but maybe that's not such a bad thing if you like that sound (which I do).. By the way, it puts out 210 watts at 4 ohms and 300 watts at 2 ohms but i'm not sure what it does at 8 ohms tbh? You can see here below the modification that barney was referring to.. And you can also see this 1978 Mark III model next to the 1982 Mark IV model that I'll be keeping and, in fact, this one is in much better condition! Anyway, suffice to say that I hope this will appeal to someone here and if not, then it'll be put up for auction on Evil Bay which would be a shame as it'd be nice to see this stay within the BC family.. Any questions, please feel free to send me a PM or ask away here and I'll do my best to answer them.. This is heavy, so postage isn't really an economic option but if required, I will be more than happy to ship it! Oh, and if you'd like to come and hear it in action, then please do.. Thanks for looking! Nik
Thanks Nik. AFAIK, the Aguilar has just dropped in to replace the passive tone controls. All the other knobs/switches do exactly what they're supposed to. So two tone controls have been replaced by a mid-boost/cut and a stacked treble & bass boost/cut. The guy I got it from (someone I trust) told me that the mod was completely reversible, requiring only a replacement pickguard - though I'll be damned if I can see why!
Thanks very much Jack; most intruiging... BTW, sorry missed your PM earlier about the bright box.. will PM you in the morning!

*** SOLD *** Thanks for the interest! Hi Folks Price now reduced to £70.00 + p&p Am having a real clear out at the moment and working on improving my rig, so as a result I have this old but good Kay Bass for sale if anyone's interested.. Not exactly sure how old it is but my guess would be 1980's?? This is the second one of these basses I've owned over the last few years.. I had one 3 years ago and sold it; regretted it and then bought this one recently on Ebay for £77.. As with a lot of these impulse Ebay purchases, it's done with the best of intentions (or so I tell myself)..you know, do a bit of restoration work, change the pick ups, etc, etc.. But in all honesty, I very rarely get around to doing that sort of stuff and I should really know better by now! Having said that about my own failings, the bass itself isn't too bad and I think it would be worth doing the work to be honest because the basic build quality is pretty good! So, if someone fancies a bit of a project, there's a potentially very nice little bass in the offing for not much money.. On the upside, the bass has had a brass nut fitted and the inlays on the neck are quite a good feature, plus the through neck design certainly adds to the tone and sustain... On the downside, the pick ups aren't original and it could do with a decent set-up, plus it was at one time, completely painted over in pink!! Though I'm happy to say that the last owner restored it to this natural finish, which is quite pleasing to my eye at least.. It actually sounds pretty good - quite thumpy and P-Bass like at one end of the scale and quite clangy and punky at the other end, when you mix in both pick ups! One thing it could definitely benefit from though, is some shielding, as the bridge pick up is quite noisy! One thing to point out is that it is NOT a short-scale bass; it is definitely 34" scale! However, the body is quite small which makes it look and feel like a short-scale bass.. I'm looking to get back what I paid for it really which was about £90 including the postage, so £75 + p&p would be fine!! I'm happy to ship it to anywhere really and though it hasn't got a gig bag or case, I will make sure it is very well packed for the journey! Of course, anyone more local who's interested is very welcome to come and try it first.. Any questions, please send me a PM or ask away here and I'll do my best to answer them.. Thanks for looking ! Nik
The insurance company will have a claim on it. Sadly if a whole chain of people have bought this bass for a fair price in good faith then a lot of people have a claim to it and it's probably best left in my experience unless you want an expensive court case. These issues are far from straightforward. One of my basses is a special edition purchased without a case or certificate from 'Crack-Converters'. Both I and the previous owner carried out our own checks to try and ascertain if it was stolen and came up with nowt. What more can you do?.
Hi Peter Thanks for that explanation..that's pretty much how it is. My interest is purely one of nostalgic curiosity rather than wanting to get into any impossible to prove claim.. As you say, a lot of people will have owned this bass and bought it in good faith (over the last 22 years or so since it was stolen) and therefore, have not done anything wrong. Nik
-
Thanks guys!! As far as the law goes, I think if you've been paid out by the insurance company (and we were), then you forfeit you claim of ownership on the stolen item.. Not sure about that exactly, but it would make sense if you think about it. I'm waiting for a reply to an email from Paul and will also check to see if i have the original receipt somewhere.. That's funny about the Dexys!! And then again, it's not... Nig; plenty of memories about both Clink & Terminal.. Prime Time was on the 3rd floor of the same building as Clink IIRC..
-
I'm almost 100% certain that used to be mine before it was stolen from me in 1987! For nothing more than sentimentalty's sake, I'm going to contact Paul at Wal to see if he can check in the book for me.. I bought in 1983 from a long-since defunct music shop in Barnet, London and it was my first ever Wal.. Did a few tours with it and then it was stolen from a rehearsal studio called Prime Time in London Bridge where we were based.. Turned out the guy who did the break in was Dexy's Midnight Runner's drummer and though he was nicked, we never got any of our gear back!!
It was trying CK's Shuttle 6.0 with the first ever Compact at the SE Bass Bash last September that got me interested. Funny thing is that my main rig is a U5/PLX so you'd think I'd prefer a Markbass head. My problem now is going to be what to gig with? A Big One, a Vintage, a Compact, a Midget/Compact. Decisions, decisions... First thing first is to find how just how loud this micro-head can push the Big One! Alex
I remember watching that momentous event happening last year Alex! Very interested to hear what you have to say once you try the various combinations out..
Pete Stevens built a 3 octave fretless bass for Steve Chesney, but I don't know of any 36 fret Wal basses. Also, I haven't seen any through neck Wal basses.
I've never seen a through-neck Wal either; I think that Pete & Wal felt that a properly made bolt-on provided more than enough sustain.. Great idea this thread - should it be made into a sticky at some point Mods???
Martin, read it, it's facinating, you won't be disappointed. You will think so differently of Roger Waters after reading it.
Ina good way or a bad way?? Am very intruiged now so will have to go and seek this book out.. -
Just had the pleasure of dealing with Neil, a.k.a. Banana, who has just bought an SWR 210 from me.. Though Neil is based in Spain, communicating with him was as easy as anything and he was great to deal with. All round, a first rate transaction! Thanks Neil - hope you enjoy using the cab.. Nik
I bought Nik's SWR 2x10. He was truly great to deal with, flexible, helpful, reasonable and it was just a pleasure. Thanks Nik, really appreciate it all.
Many thanks Neil.. Much appreciate you buying it in the first place!! Will leave you some feedback now as well... Nik
Could I have the rack case Nik?
Of course Chris! I'll PM you..
I'll take the Soundcraft and Tascam please mate.
Some other Basschatters have PM'd me about the TASCAM & Soundcraft, but in the interests of fairness, I am going to have to apply the 'first come, first served rule so likewise John, PM on it's way to you about these two items... Jack; I bought the bright box from Amps 'n' Bits in Worthing 2 years ago as an experiment to use with my (then) GK700RB head and a Marshall 412 to try to bring out the hi-end in my sound via the GK's bi-amp system. The bright box was quite good actually but I moved the Marshall on in the end as it wasn't really the sound I was looking for, so the bright box has sat around unused since then. Not much more I can say about it really.. Hope that helps!
