1.
Hi all I've been experimenting with Lightbox, and took the opportunity to try it out on my bass gallery page. Feel free to drop by and have a look (and listen!) I'll put the kettle on, but you'll have to bring your own biscuits. I'm not allowed them. This way for WoT's own little corner of cyberspace...
Fantastic in just about every department thanks! Great idea, cool layout, excellent equipment & basses.. and nice playing too!
 2. Very nice indeed and the ebony board makes it quite a unique model...
 3. Wow... Really sorry to see these 2 lovely basses up for sale Stu! Your Candy Copper fretted J5 is one of the best looking basses I have ever seen on Basschat and I'm sure, given that, it's quality and pedigree, you will have a lot of interest in it... The fretless is quite a stunner too! Hope things improve for you and good luck with the two sales.. Nik
 4.
Might be best to contact Paul Herman directly as he has taken up the Wal mantle now.. I'll PM you his contact details..
PM sent re: Paul Herman
 5. Hi Roman Very nice bass ... Did you ever use it back the at a place in London called Prime Time, a rehearsal studio near London Bridge? Saw one like it there years ago and the guy who owned it was also called Roman and he played in a band called 'Raising Cain' if I recall correctly? Hence the reason for asking! Anyway - whatever the story, there's a guy on here called EBS_Freak and he knows Bernie Goodfellow very well, so I'm sure he'll be able to help you. Good luck with it... Nik
 6.
Yes, Nick Gates our drummer deps for Micky Hart sometimes and used to be in Rum Boogie who now are no more. Nik our guitarist and harp player plays bass for Micky Hart (and I dep for him with them sometimes) and he used to be the Rum Boogie bassist (except for a year when he was in Colombia and I was Rum Boogie bassist). I've heard very good reports about Burning Organ but never actually seen you. And mr_russ I think i know too because I taught him when he was at BHASVIC. Well, thanks very much for that - you're too generous I'm sure. The Dover Castle, Southover Street, Hanover, Brighton, Sunday 7th June, 8.30pm. The Ranelagh, St James's Street, Kemptown, Brighton, Wednesday 15th July, 8.30pm. The Romans in Southwick too but I can't find the date at the moment. Be nice to see you if you can make any of those - make sure you say hello.
Cool! Please say hi to Nick (drums) for me... and The Romans would be a good one for me, so I'll have to look it up on their website.. Will definitely see you at one of your gis and will come and say hello!
 7.
I went in to work on Monday and one of my colleagues told me she had been to the Southwick Beer Festival over the weekend and had seen a really good band. I asked who they were and she told me they were called Burning Organ...
That's good to know, thanks!
 8.
Nik, Er ... my band Barabajagal played at Southwick Beer Festival on Saturday afternoon (our 4th gig) and some of that sounds like me: Fender Tony Franklin Fretless P bass (bought it from Water of Tyne), NS WAV 4 (bought it from Lee650), Bobby Gentry tune (amongst others), but the rest sounds like some one else; perhaps you'd had too much of that 8.5% beer they were selling. I take it you're in Burning Organ - I know Tony your guitarist a little and did a one off gig with him with Micky Hart & the Drugstore Romeos last summer.
Hi Dave Sorry - been busy the last few days and not had a chance to check this thread for a few days... Yes; it's definitely you! I've met your drummer a few times as well (didn't he gig with Mickey Hart before?).. Absolutely; I've been playing with Burning Organ since 2006 and took over from mr_russ, another Basschatter. I really enjoyed the 3 or 4 numbers I saw of your set by the way; great vibe in the band, good songs and perfect for the setting I thought!
And Nik, if you ever return to this thread, I'd be interested to hear what you thought of my intonation on the fretless and the upright - that was my first gig with the unlined P bass. No one in the band ever complains (except when I play a straightforwardly bum note) so I feel I'm getting away with it but I find it hard to be sure I'm really in tune even if I know I am close (or maybe just close enough). I'd appreciate a comment one way or the other if you have one.
Got to be honest Dave and say that I didn't notice anything being out of tune at all, and I hadn't even had a drink by then either! What I remember was a really lovely old skool sound from the bass/rig combination and some very fluid playing that gave the music a lot of energy.. reminded me slightly of that James Jamerson style of playing in and around the chord changes which keeps the interest going, even if the chord changes in the song are fairly standard.. When are you next playing locally? Nik
 9.
Note to Silverfoxnik: You're right - it is a Custom! Made in March 1984. Sorry for the error and thanks for pointing it out...appreciated. Note to Coasterbass: Thanks for the good advice. Thought it might be better in the main topic area for now though, as I'm keen to discuss some points that might be of more general interest first. Is it heavy?...is it ever! Upside is the tone and sustain, which has to be heard to be believed. Just listen to this:............................................................................................... .................................................................................................... A bit more than the average Wal, I think you'll agree Note to all: Photos will appear in the next few days. It could use a service. Anybody know who does it now that Pete has retired? Slight digression but a nice story that tells you something about Pete the Fish: I had the good fortune to meet him a couple of times - on one occasion, he suggested we go for lunch.... which turned out to be the local fleabit pub just round the corner from his workshop. Wanna know what his typical weekday lunch was? The biggest, greasiest bacon butty I'd ever laid eyes on at that point; a pint of best bitter and a roll-up - all at the same time! No wonder he's retired on health grounds. Lovely, lovely man - definitely old school though. More soon.
Might be best to contact Paul Herman directly as he has taken up the Wal mantle now.. I'll PM you his contact details..
 10. It'll be interesting to see the pictures; if it's an '84, it must be a Custom Model not a Pro model, which gives it a higher value instantlly...
 11. There's a good Roland combo for sale too at the moment that might be worth checking out? It's this one here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=26767
 12. Gorgeous looking basses and great photos as per usual Al!
 13. This thread is giving me real GAS for a P-Bass, which is not good (right? )
 14.
That Sir, was superb. Well done. That JV brings a tear to my eye, reminds me of one I let go years ago
+1 on both counts....
 15.
I think that compressors add a certain degree of safety when playing live. I'm not a big fan of using compression as an effect, although I think it's essential to get that phat reggae sound, but I definately wouldn't leave home without it. I believe the trick is to set the threshold so that for normal playing no compression is being applied so you still have the full required headroom for your dynamics, but it'll still kick in for those moments when you catch a string way too hard on a pop, or dig in too hard with the pick and prevent that embarasing moment when for one note you drown out the rest of the band. It may happen only once in a set, but i'd rather have it than not. A bit like an airbag I suppose. Of course for the inexperienced It's a useful tool to get consistency of volume, at least it was for me when I was starting out. I think most bassists will use less and less compression as their ability improves to the point where they eventually find it unneccessary and bin it.
+1 That's pretty much my view.. Certainly, compression makes a huge difference when recording a bass but in a live setting, unless you are using it to achieve a certain effect, then controlling your dynamic range using your playing ability is a better way to go..
 16.
Hi Nik I was going to do the same for a player I saw at a wedding last night The band were Between the Covers and the bassplayer had a lovely GB Spitfire 5 and EBS TD650 / 210. (They were from Brighton of course)! Great tone and playing. I did get a chance to say hello and tell them I thought they sounded great. The bass player said he had been on here but not for some time.
Hi Flanker, That's cool! I wish I'd been able to do the same thing... One of the things that happened to me since I joined Basschat (and Bassworld before it) is that I've developed much more of an appreciation of other bass players talent than I had before..which has got to be a good thing! Nik
 17.
I posted this on another thread but thought it deserved one of its own .. Never having had a bass lesson ever, I had my first lesson with Jake Newman (Jakesbass on 'ere) a few hours ago. All I can say is my mind has been opened like a bloody flower! I'm no newbie to this bass biznis but blimey, has Jake taken me apart. I feel like a musician all of a sudden but with so much personal expression to learn. We talked a lot of the time and this was a massively important part of the session. My most enormous f***ing lesson for tonight was: Sing what you hear in your head, then play it on the bass. Jake was singing me what he heard in his head, then playing it on the bass milliseconds later. I, being the competitive sort, had a bash at the same thing, Jake told me I was singing what I was playing, not playing what I was singing. He was absolutely right. I really thought I was playing what I was singing, but I truly wasn't and I instinctively knew that. A very humbling and exciting experience. It taught me a lot about myself and a helluva lot about why I didn't feel I was expressing myself musically. I am restricted by my technique, my repetitive patterns and my lack of/mis understanding of basic theory. I have some homework and I am raring to go! I can't believe how beneficial one lesson from a real musician (one making a living at it, one who has played with such notable musicians, and who is so accomplished at personal expression through a piece of wood with strings on it.) could be. I feel so rejuvinated Cheers, Jake.
Amazing post! Really honest too... That's exactly the same as I've felt about my playing for years now.. May be a visit to see a tutor of Jakesbass calibre is in order! Nik
 18. Hi Folks I was doing a gig yesterday at The Beer festival in Southwick near Brighton last night and when we'd finished setting up before our soundcheck, I wandered outside to see what else was going on and there was a great band playing some Bobbie Gentry tunes (amongst others) and they great! In particular, there was a guy playing what looked like a fretless P Bass special and an EUB and he was really, really good! Great timing, lovely sound and held the whole band together! Anyway, I didn't get a chance to speak to him as their set must have finished when we started our soundcheck, so I thought I'd put up a post here to see if he's a fellow Basschatter? Cheers Nik
 19.
Sounds bloody great!
+1 Paul that's fantastic; great bass line too (Shalamar??) and nice playing.. As OTPJ says, why pay more!
 20.
Jesus! Where do you practice?! Wembly?
Nice set-up....

 22.
Beautiful bass, mate - and your photography is second only to Lysdexia on this website!
+1
 23. This is not a thread for the faint-hearted!! Far too many beautiful basses, just on this page alone!! Very enjoyable though...
 24.
It is Nik, and a happier bass player am for it methinks. The C64S and CS 4001's came out yesterday too. I forget how nice they sound.
Ah, of course - I'd forgotten that you had those beauties as well Peter! Be good to see them out too...
 25. Nice collection Peter, as per usual! Is that all that is left of the once mighty GreeneKing herd, now you've sorted out the wheat from the chaff?
