Hi again Nik! I think probably No More Mr. Nice Guy, Dead Babies or Caught In A Dream, another great grooving bassline!
All great choices! There's a lot of good stuff to choose from...

Great rig and some very nice basses, but in particular, I really like the look of that JV P-bass!!
No he won't cos I picked it up from him this morning! Fantastic bass, it's definitely a keeper and my Precision is sitting in the corner feeling sorry for itself!
Glad you like it Dan! And good to meet you albeit briefly... Yes - the bass is now sold but thank you to everyone else who was interested!

Went to the new Wal factory yesterday with Mike G and had a great couple of hours... Paul Herman gave us his time and showed us around which was fantastic, so a big thanks to Paul for that! Very briefly, the details on prices, build times etc, etc will all be available soon on the new website which is about to be launched though there isn't a date set for that yet. Quite wisely, Paul is ensuring that things are done very carefully so that the re-launch of Wal Basses is done with great care and respect for the brand name and also, to manage the considerable expectation that there is out there from amongst the Wal bass community! With that in mind, I've said to Paul I'll let him see any photos I took yesterday before posting them up here or on the Walbassesnaturally group on Yahoo, so when he's had a look at them first and okay'd them, I'll put them up in another thread...

I've got one of these and I really like it, to the point where I wouldn't sell it because it's so useful, especially the two-channel facility! There's a lot of reasons why Peavey aren't a fashionable brand these days but I can remember the time when there was one of these heads in every rehearsal room in the country just about! Mine came with an old no-brand 1x15 when I bought it on Bassworld 3 years ago, and it's great for some old-skool bass sounds.. Anyway, good luck with the sale!
Hi yeah I've got a bunch of different ones of varying thicknesses, just interested :-) I have seen some small ones, much smaller than normal guitar or bass picks but don't know what kind they were. Just listening to Halo of Flies again, the interplay between drums and bass is truly excellent. Hey Nik, what's your fave Alice song? A tough choice!
That is a dificult choice! Possibly 'Generation Landslide' from 'Billion Dollar Babies'.. Also, 'Be My Lover' from 'Killer' and I love 'Halo of Flies'.. Thankfully, I don't need to make a decision! What about you?
Hi again Nik, what's the best kind of pick to use for the bass?
Depends on personal preference. My choice is a Dunlop, either .73 or .88 size... anything heavier than that and I find it slows me down.. best thing would be to buy half a dozen different ones and see what you prefer after using them all for a while...
Something worth remembering about Dunaway's playing is that he is a 100% plectrum user, and I'd say this is responsible for much of his tone and style. Pick playing's becoming something of a dying art among conbtemporary bassists (barely touch it myself, to be honest) but Dunaway's a masterclass in precision, speed & versatility with a lump of plastic! Jon.
+1 Couldn't agree more Jon. I really like using a pick for certain songs and always have and it is great to have it as an alternative style to be used as appropriate..
Just 2 littile things 1. How long? 2. How much? There, I think that'll probably cover it! BB
Ok.. will ask and report back!
Cushty mush, you? I would think my neighbours can now play that tricky run in the middle of Levitation no trouble and I am indeed awaiting the arrival of a Big One [steady son], so Denton can learn it too. You around Monday 6.00ish and I can drop the Demetriades back to you? +/- pint of course...
Good to see you educating those in need in your community! That pint sounds good but Monday I might be in Londinium.. so may have to PM you tomorrow to let you know one way or the other.. It's no problem if not then, as I'm not using it obviously... How long till the arrival of said Big One?
He IS an amazing character - and much of the music is vastly under-rated. It's just such a shame that the tracks that became known in the mainstream were the commercial ones and not the great rock and roll grooves! Like Cold Ethyl.....that bassline just f*cking GROOVES!!! Dennis Dunaway has absolutely fantastic phrasing. I only started listening to him closely a few years ago, in fact it was those basslines that really sparked my interest in the bass! He changed the way I listen to music....such an under-rated bass player! Wish I could find transcriptions!!!! Don't get me wrong, I love playing by ear but some of that rhythmic stuff would be really interesting to see written down.
Good luck with the search AM.. and if that AC Tribute band comes together!
What can he do for £50 and a crate of Stella? A big crate mind, 24 tins. Foreign silver top stuff too, none of yer UK gold top malarkey.
Dunno.. but I'll ask! I expect the answer might include the word OFF! How's things btw - are you still annoying the neighbours with that 1x15 of mine? And is Mr Claber building you one of his at the moment... Saw some posts with one of his cabs recently and it looked really good!

I'm off to meet Paul Herman tomorrow with Mike G at the new Wal workshop, so if anyone has any questions they'd like answers to, post them up here and I'll try to find out as much as i can...

Anyone know of a similar design to a Wal Bass?
Mmm. Just out of interest is there any info on the models he'll me making, the prices and the waiting times involved (years, I'll bet)?
I'm visiting his workshop tomorrow so if anyone has any questions, then post them here and I'll ask Paul what I can? -

I have two passive basses and two active basses and use them for different songs during a gig.. I love the purity of tone that comes with a passive bass but every now and again, I love the way I can use my active basses to vary the tone during a song really easily and sometimes, quite dramatically! I suppose it's a bit like the Brunettes versus Blondes arguement which is ultimately pointless if you're lucky enough to have both
Hey Nik - bet that was an amazing gig! I'm a more recent convert, I wasn't alive in 1975 You're right, very often, the basslines form the song, I wish more bands still used this style, lead bass ROCKS! You have PM!
It was bloody brilliant!! He's an amazing character Alice Cooper; from being the 'devil incarnate' and Public Enemy No.1 back in the day, he's now a born-again Christian, golf-playing, all round good Citizen who's opened up music academies to help the disaffected youth of America!! Who'd have thought that would ever happen...
They used to be quite good I think, would never class them as Punk. They are to Punk what Linkin Park are to Metal a watered down version for the masses.
+1 When he released it back in 1975, Bowie called his Young Americans album 'perpetual, plastic soul'. To me, that description can be adapted really well for bands like Green Day who I've always thought of as 'perpetual, plastic punk'..
Hey Nik, long time no speak! I didn't know you were a fellow Dunaway afficionado! I emailed him a while ago but it was to ask stuff about his project band, have you heard any of that stuff? Anyway, Prakash is also a good melodic bass player. I was going to paste a link to a great bass cover of MarloweDK playing Cold Ethyl but those fascists at YouTube have removed it. That bassline is delicious! Anyway, yes, I have just wasted the entire evening on Dunaway basslines instead of doing my proper homework which was bass exercises and theory. If there was any tribute band I would consider joining, it would be an AC band, in fact that would be cool!
Hi AM Yes; I've been an Alice Cooper fan since I was 11 years old and went to see him at Wembley on the Welcome to my Nighmare tour in 1975 (I think) with Prakash on bass. That was brilliant but I always wish that I'd seen the original line-up with DD on bass.. Along with Trevor Bolder, Bowie's bassist, DD was my first real influence and it was completely because his lines were either so melodic that they made the song great or, as was often the case, his basslines formed the core of the song! I think his work on the school's Out album is outstanding... Look forward to seeing you play when you're in that AC tribute band!
