1. Gorgeous in a way that induces dangerously high levels of GAS!!
2. Fantastic luthier; London based and a bit of a well-kept secret! I've seen a few of his basses over the years and they are very high quality instruments. Colin (lowering the tone) had a Finch version of a Wal 5 string IIRC and it was excellent! It'd be very worth a punt on this auction I feel..
3.
I wouldn´t want to blame it exclusively on Morrissey & Co. (although the songs were sub-par for the most part IMO). The venue they played (Gasometer, haven´t been there before) has a reputation for horrible sound but just how horrible I had no idea. Muddier than the droppings of a swamp monster on diarrhea. Doll and the Kicks however managed to get a decent sound. Ok, they were just guitar, bass, drums and a singer but still... Well, lesson learned - I´ll never get anywhere near that venue again unless they manage to bring back John Martyn, Jeff Buckley and Miles Davis.
That'll be some gig!!!
4. Just bought a Sandberg five string set and fitted them to my Fender Jazz Deluxe V and was very, very disappointed in the quality of the strings.. First of all, very poor string tension which didn't flatter the B string at all and there was no real definition in the sound; I think the words 'flabby' and 'vague' spring to mind.. Worst of all was the fact that the intonation was suddenly all over the place?? Anyway, they were so bad I took them off and put the old EBS strings back on and, although they're pretty old, they sounded much, much better and everything was suddenly back in tune! Was this just a bad batch or has anyone else experienced this with a set of Sanbergs?
5. Very interesting and congratulations by the way! Been thinking about doing the same thing myself, so this is encouraging news..
6.
have a bump from a fellow wal owner, can't believe it's not gone yet. Wish I could afford it mate
+1 me neither.. and this is a very good price!
7.
She has a decent enough voice to make it on her own.
+1 very unusual voice.. Would much rather see her play than Morrisey, who's the most over-rated artist of the last 40 years IMO!
8.
It should also be noted that this amp comes with free giant for obscene rig constructions.
9. Wow!! One of the highest priced basses I've ever seen in this For Sale forum - which is not surprising given what it is - and it's an amazing looking bass! Good luck with the sale..
10. +1 I have one of these (1998) and it's really good..and though it's not as diverse sounding as my Roscoe Beck V, it does nail that 'jazz bass' tone to a tee! This looks like a particularly good one and the colour is quite unusual too.. Good luck with the sale!
11.
Got dry stone wall envy now, awww.
+1 Nice looking bass Peter! Are you going to put a string tree on it?
12.
You don't really want the screwdriver to slip when you're installing a new volume knob on 3 grands worth of unobtanium oil finished Nicaraguan Mojo wood.
If we could produce them or find them somewhere, I think the stats would show that the percentage of players who use plectrums is about the same in terms of whether they play stock, off-the-shelf basses or custom build basses.. Though I do think that Rob may be onto something with his OP.. and maybe there's a secret bass society consisting of mainly jazzers & slappers who own at least 5 custom built coffee table basses each, that are stored in vacuum-sealed impregnable vaults inside houses built in specially designated 'plectrum free zones'..
13. Does the amp run at 2 ohms..?
14.
+1 and that Ken Smith is an absolute beauty.
+2 on that.. Bought my Wal off Gwil some time back and he is a great bloke who really knows his stuff when it comes to high quality basses! Yes - that Ken Smith is fabulous...
15.
Its early 80's I believe, the sound is really good with a great range of tones with all those controls. I did some recordings with it in my old band and sounded great on those. Is that your Wal in the avatar, I've always wanted to try one, I love the sound of them only trouble is I'd probably have to sell a kidney or something to ever own one lol.
Cool! Sound wise, I imagine the Kramer would be not far off from my old 1984 BC Rich Eagle, which had a very similar design in terms of electronics and pick ups.. That was a fabulous bass.. Yes, the Wal is mine; it's a 1979 Pro IIe model and sounds fantastic! Cost me about £800 IIRC 4 years ago but they go for more now (unfortunately)..
16. There's something really insane about this bass IMO, but in a really good way! A fantastic piece of design and engineering and I'm really kind of curious to know how old it is and what it sounds like? Good luck with the sale..
17.
Yup. Took me a while to say that didn't it?
Words of wisdom at last!
18. Good point... Well, this is certainly up there with the best.. but for the life of me, I can't see why as this is such a bargain!
19. This looks like a really fantastic bass for the money, even in these hard-up times..especially as it comes with the original case, strap etc.. I've always preferred the flexibility of the Sabre to the Stingray..had the pleasure of playing a friend's 1980 model some years back) and the tonal variety is superb! If I wasn't such a die-hard 70's Wal fanatic (and I had the spare cash), I'd really be wanting to buy this... No help to the OP, but have a free bump on me anyway
20. Stunning and what looks like a very fair price for such a unique instrument!
21. I have the NA650 as well and it's a very good sounding amp, with a lot of tonal flexibility and a good array of features.. Personally, I don't use the internal compression but i do use the 'edge' control to dirty up the very clean, almost hi-fi' tone of the amp. The enhance control is similar to the contour control on Gallien Krueger amps and is a bit like having a sweepable pre-shaping facility which is very cool. But having said that, it needs to be used with caution IMO because, although it makes the tone of your bass sound great in a solo context, if you over use it within a band setting, you will lose the presence of your bass in the mix because it effectively takes all the mids out of your sound. As already said, the DI out is great and personally, I've never had a problem with the gain/input stage; in fact, I find the 10db gain boost switch really useful when swapping between active and passive basses. Another very useful facility is the fact that the NA650 will work at 2 ohms, which allows me to run 2 x 4ohm cabs for bigger gigs and get the maximum output from the amp (though I'm not sure if other Nemesis heads do this). Well worth checking out I'd say, though do have a look around at some of the second-hand Eden gear currently on sale here because there's some good stuff around..
22.
Guess I was trying to make the point that, for me, Stevie Wonder is beyond just mere genius... Cheers, Steve
+2 Possibly the most influential black artist of the past 40 years or so IMO, along with James Brown perhaps.. It was a superb show and the great songs just kept coming and coming! Agree with Josh re: Nathan Watts - he was a pleasure to listen to.. Funny that about him being the MD; I was watching Leonard Cohen on TV last week and Roscoe Beck was the bass playing MD as well...
23. Beedster's modified Sub 5 has been around a bit too; Chris, me, Walman, JoJo Bass, OBBM and a couple of others too IIRC..
