Anyone know of a similar design to a Wal Bass?
silverfoxnik replied to Soloshchenko's topic in Bass Guitars
Mmm. Just out of interest is there any info on the models he'll me making, the prices and the waiting times involved (years, I'll bet)?
I'm visiting his workshop tomorrow so if anyone has any questions, then post them here and I'll ask Paul what I can? -

I have two passive basses and two active basses and use them for different songs during a gig.. I love the purity of tone that comes with a passive bass but every now and again, I love the way I can use my active basses to vary the tone during a song really easily and sometimes, quite dramatically! I suppose it's a bit like the Brunettes versus Blondes arguement which is ultimately pointless if you're lucky enough to have both
Hey Nik - bet that was an amazing gig! I'm a more recent convert, I wasn't alive in 1975 You're right, very often, the basslines form the song, I wish more bands still used this style, lead bass ROCKS! You have PM!
It was bloody brilliant!! He's an amazing character Alice Cooper; from being the 'devil incarnate' and Public Enemy No.1 back in the day, he's now a born-again Christian, golf-playing, all round good Citizen who's opened up music academies to help the disaffected youth of America!! Who'd have thought that would ever happen...
They used to be quite good I think, would never class them as Punk. They are to Punk what Linkin Park are to Metal a watered down version for the masses.
+1 When he released it back in 1975, Bowie called his Young Americans album 'perpetual, plastic soul'. To me, that description can be adapted really well for bands like Green Day who I've always thought of as 'perpetual, plastic punk'..
Hey Nik, long time no speak! I didn't know you were a fellow Dunaway afficionado! I emailed him a while ago but it was to ask stuff about his project band, have you heard any of that stuff? Anyway, Prakash is also a good melodic bass player. I was going to paste a link to a great bass cover of MarloweDK playing Cold Ethyl but those fascists at YouTube have removed it. That bassline is delicious! Anyway, yes, I have just wasted the entire evening on Dunaway basslines instead of doing my proper homework which was bass exercises and theory. If there was any tribute band I would consider joining, it would be an AC band, in fact that would be cool!
Hi AM Yes; I've been an Alice Cooper fan since I was 11 years old and went to see him at Wembley on the Welcome to my Nighmare tour in 1975 (I think) with Prakash on bass. That was brilliant but I always wish that I'd seen the original line-up with DD on bass.. Along with Trevor Bolder, Bowie's bassist, DD was my first real influence and it was completely because his lines were either so melodic that they made the song great or, as was often the case, his basslines formed the core of the song! I think his work on the school's Out album is outstanding... Look forward to seeing you play when you're in that AC tribute band!
There is a new luthier that makes basses like Wals. I'll try to remember the link... In the meantime if you're in no hurry you could put your name down on the waiting list for a new Wal. Don't hold your breath, though - it could be a while... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=26299
There's some good news on that front... I was speaking to Paul Herman today and he says the new Wals are almost ready to go! -
Aloha For some time I have been trying to find books of Dennis Dunaway's early bass playing with Alice Cooper but I can't find anything. Some of it I can play by ear, but not all. It would be great to find some sheet music of the Dennis Dunaway era - an under-rated player! I love that melodic lead bass style, sadly it's a dying art....
Absolutely totally agree with you about Dunaway, AM; he is as you say an under-rated bassist! Also agree with you that that sort of melodic lead playing is a bit of a dying art.. He contributed so much to Alice Cooper I think; song-wise, playing wise and arrangement wise... Fantastic! Got to say I've never seen any books either. He does have a website so you might be able to email him and ask him? Nik

Just bought and Aphex Xciter pedal of Russ that arrived safe & sound today.. It's a really great fx unit, sounds great and is in really good condition so I'm very happy with it.. Got to say that Russ has been absolutely brilliant to deal with and is someone who I'd highly recommend to everyone here on Basschat! Cheers Nik

Justin has just bought my Nomad Bassman from me and just to echo the sentiments expressed above, he's a great person to deal with and I'd happily deal with him again! Great Basschatter and some really quirky, cool gear too... Cheers! Nik

Thanks Justin - much appreciated!
LOL, you'd be keeping it had it been made in the '80s Shame you're selling it mate, it's a unique bass and one I've always wanted to own (however, as you know, I am now NoGasMan). It is a bargain price so I'm surprised it's still here (perhaps offer it on ebay to the continent or US). Good luck with the sale Chris
Thanks for the support and excellent 80's reference as per usual Chris!! You could be right in that Ebay might be the best place to sell this.. By the way, you probably know that the Nomad went to another Basschatter this week, so I am temporarily free of 80's FX units, which can only be a good thing!
Martin Kemp's original Wal was one of the leather pick guard ones which used to belong to Alan Spenner, who used it in Roxy Music. Kemp sold this Wal about 8 - 9 years ago; I saw it in the Bass Cellar, when he signed up for East Enders. It had the switches on the pickups and was one of the best sounding basses I've heard. Pity it was only a 4 string!
I remember when that happened. The leather scratchplate one was up for about £1100 or £1200 at the time! And I remember when he bought it from Wal for £500 in 1987 (god, I'm an old git!)..
