Very interesting - And what a musician! I like the idea of the masking tape across the strings near the bridge. Very akin to Victor Wooten's hair band at the top of the neck. Rich.
+1 Great tone and technique and she really has done it! There's so much common sense in what she's saying there.. reminded me of when I saw Herbie Flowers last year and he was talking about his life and his work.. Thanks for the link... -
The MM 5 looks fantastic - lots of mojo as phsycoandy said!
Bad news I'm afraid, with the Seymour Duncan the devaluing is immense. I'll give you £20 for the bass and take the original pup off your hands for a fiver. Can't be fairer than that. In seriousness. I'd say over 2K, definately, and pics would be nice.
Wow - that much! And yes, pics would be nice...
Of course, somewhat, this is beauty in the eye of the owner, but there are enough performances and recordings out there to substantiate Wal Basses true value as great instruments.
+1

Nice collection Rob, but what happened to the Yamaha BB bass you got from Greenking/Peter?
Small world! Yup. played the blue Pro2e (in fact recorded with it as my MM Sabre developed an earth hum that day), still his main bass for live work. He's also got a fretless Pro2e in natural ash which I keep trying to buy off him! I'll check that wedding night story....
Small world indeed!! BTW, if you speak to him soon, please tell him that Nik from Winchmore Hill send his regards! If he tells you the wedding night story, you should then ask him to tell you the boiled eggs story. Another classic! Sorry for going off-topic...
Always preferrred the earlier Tubeway Army stuff as being stronger songs - Jo the waiter, Me I disconnect from you, etc Andy Coghlan ("Wal") used to play bass for him too, now runs a studio a couple of miles from me doing mainly acoustic and Welsh language recordings - top guy and top bassist.
+1 Andy's an old mate of mine from his North London days.. He has a beautiful pale Blue Wal Pro2e that he once lent me to tour with about 20 years ago.. He tells a great 'wedding night' story about that bass which, if you haven't heard it, you should ask him to tell you! Brilliant bloke and a great player as you say, though I haven't spoken to him for about 3 years now.
I had a Wal for seven years and sold it as it was very heavy and a bad neck diver. I think I only used it for so long because I had always wanted one from first playing bass and Mick Karn was and is my favourite bassist. I tried lots of basses over a twenty plus years pro' career and steadfastly avoided such "common" basses as Fenders. Of course now I only own Fender Jazz basses and agree they sound great. I think the Wal was primarily designed as a studio bass and to this end versatility was all important. I found my Wal to be over complicated for live work. The sound wasn't to my taste and as for construction I remember the neck pocket wasn't very tight and it was the only bass I have owned that had a dead spot. Also I found the neck to be very wide and chunky in profile, altogether a very impractical design for a gigging bass. Leo Fender was a design genius who got it right with the Jazz and Precision designs and these designs remain to this day as the basic template of all other bass designs.
That is of course, unless you like Wals and then it's a very practical design for a gigging bass.. Having said that, I love the Jazz bass design and have two five string models which I gig with and they're great.

Great photos Al! Thought the band looked better with you on bass I have to say.... You have a very cool 'bass pose' that the other chap just doesn't have...
-
Nice collection! I like the fact that you have the 3 classic Leo Fender bass designs right there (albeit one of them is a Lakland..)!
