1. Looks great! What sort of price is 'half the cost of a Sadowsky M24'?
  2. Slightly higher action on the B string might help?
  3.
Bargain Bump! Seen these go for £400..
B-U-M-P !
  4. Hi Folks, A couple of weeks ago I was having a discussion in the Bass Guitar Forum about ways to boost the output volume of my Fender Roscoe Beck bass and Leschirons (or Keith as he's known to his friends and family) suggested I should try out the Aphex Bass xciter as he used one with his Roscoe Beck... Anyway, as if that good advice wasn't enough, Keith then offered to send his Aphex over to me (from France) for a while to give me the opportunity to try one out for myself before buying one - how amazing is that!!! The Aphex has arrived and is pretty good actually, so much so that I'm looking for one for myself now.. But I'm really grateful that not only has Keith taken the time and effort to help me out in such a way, he's also put his trust in me... So, this is just to say thanks to Keith who is an absolutely brilliant bloke, a credit to the bass community and of course, an example of everything that is great about Basschat! Highly, highly recommended... Many thanks! Nik
  5.
Ooooh, that's MY review of the bass Now that I read it again, it may be a tiiiiny bit too long Very good bass, it doesn't sound very modern at all (of course), but with an unique tone. Too bad mine has been stolen (bastards...)
Sorry to hear your bass has been stolen!! Good review though...
  6. Sorry to hear this Peter, though I remember you mentioning it when we met up last month... It's always been my experience that musicians with oversized egos kill all the fun of being in a band.. Unfortunately, I've lost count of the number of times that the 'oversized ego' has belonged to the guitarist! Hope things improve for you!
  7.
Boy am I in a good mood these days. Got a new number one guitar as well this year.
I'm not suprised; it looks really nice! A much wider looking neck than the standard Jazz 5 by the looks of it...
  8.
Good question though obviously not an easy question one to answer as I've no way of telling whether you'd have the same problem with it's feel as me.. as for the wood; no - I like the maple as it gives it a real 'snap' to the sound! But as for neck width and any other factors, what works for me may not work for you and vice-versa.. So I'm loathe to say. To help answer your questions as much as possible, I'll try and get some more details on it in terms of nut width, width at 12th fret and bridge etc, and I'll also get it weighed as well!
In response to a few PMs I've had asking for more info, here's a link to the T-40 Enthusiasts website, which has the manual available to view online: http://peaveyt40.forumotion.com/t-40-user-...47a83b9fd235122 According to one article on the web, here's the neck details: "Width at nut 1.56", string spacing at bridge .75", fingerboard radius 16"" There's also this from a BGRA review of the bass: "It's in very good nick, few scratches and dents here and there, but very well kept, considering it's a 30 year old bass. Quite heavy, although not as heavy as I thought it would be (about 5kg, erm... I think approx. 10lb), when switching basses, you really feel the difference :-) I didn't find the neck to be "log-like", actually: it's really comfortable, although I must say I'm not a fan of glossy finish on the neck, but it isn't really a problem, especially since I dig the neck profile very much. The only thing I don't really like is the radius, maybe a little bit too flat for my taste, but it's all about getting used to it." Full review is HERE I actually think the weight of this particular bass is more than 10lbs so I will weigh it ASAP just to be sure... Hope that helps!
  9. Very impressive, both the designs and the standard of workmanship by the look of it! Do you have plans to put soundclips up on your site as I think that would be really helpful?
  10. Hi Folks, Just sold a 4U rack case to Endorka and it was as easy and straightforward a transaction as I've done here on Basschat, so am happy to highly recommend Jennifer on to fellow Basschatters! Excellent musician as well judging from the MySpace tracks.. Anyway, thanks again and I hope the rack case comes in useful on the forthcoming tour! Cheers Nik
  11.
Just wondering if I would have the same problem with the neck as you do, or if it might be better for me. Is it the width, the maple, or something else? Also how much does it actually weigh?
Good question though obviously not an easy question one to answer as I've no way of telling whether you'd have the same problem with it's feel as me.. as for the wood; no - I like the maple as it gives it a real 'snap' to the sound! 12.
Bargain Bump! Seen these go for £400..
Thanks! They do go for more, though it's a buyers market at the moment obviously..
  13. **** NOW SOLD **** Thanks for all the interest! Hi Folks, I recently bought this 1979 Peavey T-40 from GreeneKing with the slightly bonkers idea of turning it into a 4-string bass but with low B tuning, i.e. B-E-A-D.. But when I got it 2 weeks ago I decided against that idea as it would have meant spoiling the integrity of the bass, which is pretty much as it was when first made apart from a recently fitted new scratchplate (also comes with the original though). It's in good working order, is set up nicely and plays really well and has a very distinctive tone - apparently much loved in country rock circles in the good old US of A! The passive circuitry is very unique and allows the pick ups to be used in either single-coil or humbucker mode just by altering the tone controls for each pick up! The sound from the bridge pick up is an absolute joy and the 'thump' from the neck pick up is really good.. You can get a vintage 70s vibe quite easily but also a more nasally, '80s 'honk' at the flick of a toggle switch! All in all, it's a very good bass and especially so at this kind of price... Just to be clear, it is a heavy bass though that's never bothered me personally as my Wal and Roscoe Beck are very heavy too..The weight adds to the tone of the bass, so IMHO, is a trade-off worth making! Anyway, here's some pictures that GreeneKing has very kindly let me use, though I will take some more at the weekend in better lighting if I can: There's a few reasons why I've decided to sell and that's as follows: 1) Because I just can't seem to get on with the feel or size of the neck. 2) I'm not sure this will get used as a normal 4 string ahead of my Wal or BC Rich Eagle (both of which are more comfortable for me to play). 3) Because I'm thinking maybe I should look around and get another 5 string, like a G&L L2500 Tribute or one of the Ibanez ones like the SRX705NT. I'm also on the lookout for an Aphex Bass Exciter, so trades are definitely possible depending on what's out there? I paid £220 for this bass so am looking to get as close as I can to that figure for it now. It goes without saying that anyone nearby is very welcome to come and try the bass and yes, I am happy to ship at buyers expense and risk. Will be well protected and shipped in a Fender Gigbag. Please PM me with any questions and thanks for looking! Nik
  14. Looks great! Very underrated basses these MTDs....
  15.
Popular music, ie, Pop Music has been around for a 1,000 odd years. In the early 60's, The right time, the right set of communication networks, the right economic situation was primed for the right pop group. The Beatles were the first band that were able to communicate ideas of sex, anarchy, hedonism, murder, mental ilness, black magic, loneliness and all other human emotions and failings/celebrations, into 3 mins of perfect popular music. The Beatles are without doubt, the most important pop band ever.
slightly off-tangent but a difficult point to disagree with!
  16.
Wrong wrong wrong! My capacity for obssessing about music is unchanged, I still have the exact same passion for actual music, I just hate the bullshit that surrounds it!
But the point isn't about your capacity for obsessing AM, it's about the fact that it takes so much more to be amazed now because you've already experienced so much amazing stuff (which is why you obsessed in the first place)..
  17.
And accept that you'll never obsess over a band like you did as a teenager because you've heard so much more now and have so much more music in your life.
Spot on!! Plus of course, everything has been done...and done to death. Most everything that 'rock music' has had to offer the world was done by about 1975...
  18.
My imagination is always better than I am but my playing usually takes several steps forward when I buy better gear. In my experience better gear helps to improve your confidence and playing ability.
+1 It's a constant process, trying to improve your playing, then your sound.. then your imagination goes up a level, and so the whole thing continues.. Having said that, I think there's a point where you probably can't get much better gear once you spend over a certain amount of money, but contiually working on your playing will always improve you as a musician.
  19.
Hmmm... nobody home...
Sorry. been away for Easter weekend in London.. PM replied to!
  20.
Wow, looks the business! How does it compare to your other Precision in terms of sound? More throaty I'd suspect?
+1 very cool finish indeed!
  21. That does look really nice, though a lot of lifting to achieve it I guess...
  22. There are some bass players who are more 'conservative' than others, and vice versa.. Same as in all other walks of life isn't it?
  23. Age is just a state of mind (apparently...)
