I've owned and tried a lot of different Wals over the years and found that, like most basses, they vary a lot in tone and playability, so you have to try a few before you find 'the one' that suits you best as a player. My personal favourites are the early Pro models which have an ash body, don't have the 'filter' e.q. and are more gutsy sounding than the Custom models in my opinion.. They also have the big headstock (which I love) and weigh a ton and have bad neck dive.. But it doesn't matter to me because I just love the tone/look of them. Isn't it great though that there are so many fantastic basses to choose from these days; whether you like Wals, GBs, Sei's, Overwater, Status, Shuker etc, etc, the custom bass market in the UK just has so much to offer it's brilliant!
Hi Guys, i've been talked into doing a new project...... the group of lads are firmly against the classic rock stuff and the following bands have been proposed Killers Kings of Leon Jet Kaiser Chiefs Franz Ferdinand Stereophonics Foo Fighters I have to admin I don't really know the back catalogue of these bands too well...... I'm looking for recommendations of songs from these bands where the bass is interesting / prominent / integral to the song I'm not really looking to just sit back and play ploddy 8th notes all night with a pick !! I'm sure I won't be able to avoid playing whatever hits these guys have had, but could use some insight into their other songs too, I need to go along to our first get together with some ideas of what I want to play..... Ofcourse i'm going to listen to their stuff myself but tghought it might be an idea to get a quick roll call from my bass playing peers Thanks Guys ATB Mark
We do 'When you were Young' by the Killers which is great, but so are lots of their other tunes, especially the 'Are we human' single that was out recently..

Your Fave Basschat Bass Players!
silverfoxnik replied to doctor_of_the_bass's topic in General Discussion
My fav is bassninja but that's because I've seen him do some gigs and can rate him in that environment, as opposed to seeing him play at a Bass Bash for example. He's a really fabulous musician who always plays the song first and the fact that he does it in a very musical and funky way just makes him even better IMO.. On a slightly more frivolous note, I have seen some truly great Basschat virtuoso players at the Bass Bashes but no-one comes close to the guy who 'slapped' his way through about 5 hours at the National Bash last March! Think my ears are still bleeding.. -
Fantastic! She reaches parts of 'the pocket' other bass players fail to reach..
Well here's my rig. Swr 350 (mk2?) and I think its a Triad 1. Would ya believe Ive not gigged with it in over two years (and it got serviced just before its last outing doh!) It was such a blast playing it live and I love the triad 3 way speaker setup Its currently used as a key stand in my old flat. Such a shame Im not gigging for the forseeable.(Coming to a for sale site near you!)
Very nice! I have a Triad, though a later version, and I love it.. Wouldn't mind another one though my back might complain! If you do ever decide to sell it, I might be interested...
Seems to have been a while since there was any update on the new Wal situation... anyone heard anything?
Haven't heard anything specific Russ but there is a holding page up on the internet now: http://www.walbass.co.uk/ I think some people here have actually had some dealings with Paul Herman for spare parts etc lately as well....

Hi Folks, I was bidding on a 1x10 cab on Ebay but it was a 'collection only' auction with the seller being based in Bath, so way too far for me to get to.. So, not to be outdone I duly put a post up on Basschat asking for help and almost immediately, Dave aka 'TheRev' offered to pick up the cab and help ship it to me.. Anyway, I won the auction and Dave very kindly went and picked up the cab and parcelled it up immaculately, ready for collection. Needless to say, it arrived here completely safe & sound! As if that isn't enough, going back a couple of years, I bought a Peavey Sessionbass head from Dave (possibly in Bassworld days..) and he virtually delivered it to my door, on his way back from a gig over in East Sussex, saving me loads of time and postage! So, I just wanted to thank Dave and say he is just about one of the nicest people you're ever likely to meet! And he typifies what Basschat is all about IMHO.. Absolutely brilliant Dave - thanks mate! Cheers Nik

I think Copeland is a great drummer but him and Sting aren't my idea of a great rythym section..
I certainly have some doubts about letting it go. That is why I want to swop it. It also crossed my mind to have it made fretless. But I like to keep it original in case I ever want to sell it. Making it fretless will cost me money and also will devaluate the bass. Ordering a fretless Wal neck would be a good idea, but god know how long that will take.
There used to be some spare necks lying around at the Wal factory in High Wycombe and it may be that Paul herman has them now, since he's taken over everything.. Worth a try at least?
Can you feel the love? I can't believe the response to my original post. A few interested parties of course, but the number of PMs saying "WTF are you doing?!" has made me realise that getting rid of this bass would probably be something I'd regret for the rest of my days. So, with apologies to those who were interested in the bass, I think we'll end the feeler status here; please consider the bass withdrawn. Thanks to all Gareth
Very wise decision if I might say so, Gareth! Your bass is one of the 'defining' Wals from the later period of the company's history IMO..

That looks amazing, disorientating, but amazing!
