I use fingers, and I love the slapping thing but that's still a work in progress. As for a pick, they have never entered the equation for me although I see nothing wrong with them. I do sometimes play as if with a pick but without one (if that makes sense??) I read recently that it was called something like 'chucking'??? - don't know if anyone can shed any light on that?
I think Bernard Edwards used that technique; it's kind of using the thumb like a pick IIRC.. There's one particular Chic song where it's particularly evident but I can't remember which song..
Good job Phil Lynott (Gawd rest 'im) wasn't around to hear that - there is NO playing style that should be outlawed - otherwise we would not have had the innovating talents of so many pros who have different ways of playing to get 'their' sound
+1
This is my current SWR complement....including the Raven Labs posh DI. Now I just need a decent gig, so its worth lugging it all around! BB
That's very nice indeed!!
Just to echo everyone else's sentiments, sorry to hear about your troubles- hope things work out and you can aim to get them all back one day soon!
+1 Terrible situation to be in but i'm glad to hear you have some options open to you, even if it means moving away from the UK.. Hope this sale gets you what you need and things on the work front improve!
Aye - loved early Adam and the Ants (Xerox, Whip in my Valise, Dirk Wears White Sox etc), and love Monochrome Set even more... Here's their myspace page - check Eine Symphonie and He's Frank for those who don't know them! http://www.myspace.com/themonochromeset
Those were good days! I did a few gigs with TMS, before Andy joined them though... Thanks for the link!

Hi Folks, Just acquired a Yamaha NE1 pedal from John in a very smooth transaction.. Pedal's great, got here super-fast and is exactly as described! Funny thing is, although John has been a Basschatter since summer '07, he doesn't leave many posts so I thought he might be a new member of the Forum.. Hopefully with hs recent for sale activity, we'll now see more of him around as he's a really good guy to deal with. Cheers John! Nik

Great collection Peter and very diverse... The old Yamaha looks great in a retro way along with the T-40 and I really love the look of the Warmoth.. As already said, a Wal would round it off very nicely..

Definitely true about having higher action to get more control over your tone, but that does all come down to your playing and your technique.. To be honest, I like lots of different playing styles and bass tones by various players but that's their sound, not mine so I just concentrate these days on trying to do my own thing ( however well or however badly) for the songs that we play in the set. Sean - that's the first time I've heard Matt Garrison and he has an amazing style but it sounds and looks more like classical guitar playing than bass playing IMO.. As for Leigh, well we've discussed that a few times already! Suffice to say I still love what he does. The YouTube clip reminded me of just how cool Matthew was back in those days - sadly missed!
Andy Warren -of Adam and the Ants, and more impressively The Monochrome Set.. Interesting and musical player and I'll hear no wrong said of him, poor fella..
You're the first person I've ever heard mention Andy Warren on a bass forum and it's great to hear him get a mention!! I used to know him many years ago from the early Ants days and he had such a great stage persona, it almost didn't matter what he played. Certainly got a clanking great sound out of his Rickenbacker.. The first Monochrome Set (Strange Boutique) album was/is fantastic...

Difficult to say; early Tobias basses did go for quite high prices in the States but they're less common over here so it's not so easy to find a benchmark.. So, my guess would be around the £1200-£1500 mark, but that's based purely on the fact that the market for 6 string basses is smaller than it is for 5 string basses.. And also the fact that there is less money around at the moment. Very good basses though...
Ola! Here is a snap of my current rig which was fired up today for the recording of my bands new EP. The rig consists of: Boss Micro Rack 10 band graphic EQ Summit Audio TD100 Valve DI dbx 163x compressor Korg dtr1000 rack tuner Aguilar AG500sc Ampeg Classic 2x10 Ampeg Classic 1x15 Iceni Zoot Classic J Funkmeister 5 String Sadowsky Metro RV5 It sounds nice Cheers! Craig
That looks great! As do the basses..

My bass goes directly into a DHA VT-1 Bass Purist pedal and the signal from that goes into my amp. Then I use the send/return on my amp to drive a DBX MC6 compressor and a Boss FT 2 dynamic filter pedal.. Generally, I prefer to have as little as possible in the way of the bass and the amp but the DHA pedal adds a little valvey warmth to the sound of my Eden Nemesis head, which is solid-state.

Very nice - enjoyed the Duran Duran number...
I would agree with those suggestions. I love Pino's recent work with John Mayer. How about: James Jamerson Bernard Edwards Paul McCartney ?
+1 Love all of those three as players...
So do I - when you need it back Nik, just give us a bell - can deliver! Yep - and I can thoroughly recommend the BarefacedBass Big One. For the first time since I got shot of me Sunn 2x15 in the 80's, I was able to hear myself properly wherever I was on the stage, so was the drummist. Thread here, my brief review here. EDIT: Alex is doing a 2x15 too...
So what cabs are you using now then John.. Have you bought something since I saw you last or are you waiting on one of Alex's exciting new cabs?
Had the chance to play both a Fodera and a GB Rumour last night. They were different and the Fodera can be used passive. Would not like to say which was best without gigging them - both great basses and I am very happy with my new Rumour.
So, did you pick up your new GB Rumour locally, in Brighton, then John?

Nice one Al! Good luck with it all..

Nice bass but only worth buying if you're a collector..

Need help deciding on a lightweight 2x10 + amp.
silverfoxnik replied to saibuster's topic in Amps and Cabs
Would this be too heavy? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=38922&hl=eden -
Acme Low B2 - where can you get them from in the UK ?.
silverfoxnik replied to 6stringbassist's topic in Amps and Cabs
Would have thought that Alex Claber would know the answer to this as he used to use two Acme cabs IIRC...
