1.
Lots of good advice already. I've spent the last four years playing in a covers band around Kent, Sussex and very occasionally London. It's been a lot of hard work, but largely good fun. We mainly play weddings, corporate dos, masons gigs etc but also a few pub gigs. It takes a long time to build a decent setlist and a fair bit of investment in gear (e.g. PA etc if you haven't already got one) and organising gigs etc can also be time consuming. You may also have to play a few tunes that you personally loathe. On the plus side you may get to make some good mates, a bit of money and you will probably improve enormously as a player. In my experience it's very rare to be treated badly, ignored etc, although I may just have been lucky of course. As long as people are responding - i.e. dancing, singing etc - then it's a good way to spend a Friday/Saturday night. You get the occasional lame gig, but you learn to not take it too personaly and it can be a useful learning tool. I spent far too many years playing in hopeless original bands and indulging the egos of various singer songwriters and regret not having got involved in a covers band earlier. Good luck and go for it. Just keep the originals project going if you can as it's a nice counterbalance to then covers world.
+1 Some excellent advice here, especially OG's 'Rough Guide To..' Basschat at it's finest!
2. My BC Rich Eagle has with two P pups which are exactly the same, i.e Dimarzios and it sounds great! That's very interesting looking bass by the way...
3. Just bought a great little SKB 2U rack case from Ray, which arrived perfectly, on time and was even better than described! Whole thing went through quickly and smoothly, so thanks for that Ray! Very happy to recommend you on to other Basschatters as one of the good guys around here to do business with.. Nik
4.
Nice guy to do business with!
Thanks Ray - much appreciate the kind words which are reciprocated! Look forward to the next one!!
5.
Hi Steve Looks good, but I wonder if more info might help people lay down that much cash? Best of luck Gareth
+1 Photos are good though.. Looks like a fine example!
6. Some good suggestions here! +1 on a bit more content about 'music' as opposed to 'gear'. Can't help but think that, whatever improvements, new sections are made etc, unless the standard of interviewing & writing improves it just won't get better. Perhaps there could be a guest reviewer from Basschat writing in BGM every couple of months? Looking at some of the reviews on here, they're just as good.
7.
I met Nik yesterday over a coffee and sold him my Peavey T-40. I've known Nik for a long time on the forum and its predecesser and always thought that he was a great bloke. Yesterday confirmed that! Peter
Many thanks Peter - the feeling is mutual! Look forward to the next purchase/sale/chat etc...
8. Have to agree - that is a gorgeous bass! Good luck with the sale...
9. Had the pleasure of meeting up with Peter today in West Sussex to give him some paper stuff in exchange for a T-40! The bass is very nice indeed (as all Peter's basses are) and he is absolutely top bloke... Just as this feedback thread says he is! Cheers Peter - hope to catch up with you again at some point...
10.
They are a very nice pair indeed!! Z x
+1
11.
Hi there, I have been borrowing an Ibanez Roadster (RS800 Sunburst, 1979 model) from a friend of mine for some time now - was my main bass until I bought my lovely Warwick from Gaf here! The Ibanez actually belongs to his Dad's church - they have replaced it now with a "modern lightweight bass" (not sure what) and so apparently have no further need for it. I keep asking him if he wants it back, but he is in no great hurry (mainly 'cos of its weight and the fact he is usually lugging a guitar pedalboard around). So, I have been thinking it might be easier if I just bought it off him/his Dad, but the problem is I have no idea what it is worth. Basically, it is in pretty poor condition - chunks of the finish have been knocked off the body in multiple places, and it has no knobs for the pots (and one of the pots is missing a bolt so it slips inside the body.. All pretty cosmetic stuff - the bass itself works fine, and is pretty nice (but very high action at the moment). I would be grateful if people could give me some kind of idea of what he might realistically expect for it if he was to sell in the current market. I will try to post some photos later. James
Need to see some photos to get a better idea really...
12. Doesn't look too bad! You haven't put your asking price by the way..
13. Cheers Jon!
14. Looks very well made to me, even with just that poor quality picture to go on.. Interesting?
15. These aren't cheap but they're pretty good apparently: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=44861 And IIRC, Prosebass has some interesting Artec pick ups that he fits in his custom build basses. Have alook here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showforum=71

My Wal
Have you looked in the control cavity yet? There is often a bit of masking tape with some more details about the bass, woods etc.
I think they only started doing that with the Custom models, from about 1981/2 onwards... More information here: http://www4.cs.fau.de/~koesters/Privat/Wal/walspec.html and here: http://www.trevorandthea.eclipse.co.uk/wal_history.htm
17.
However i think if i wanted a new Jazz bass i'd give Prosebass a call, certainly looks like he puts more pride into his work than a lot of bigger manufacturers.
+1 Have thought that very same thing myself recently....
18. I bought one of these NE1 pedals recently on here as I'd always fancied trying one out and I was very pleasantly surprised at how good it sounds and how useful it is.. Because it is a sweepable 'Q' type frequency, it's like having an Alembic or Wal Custom tone control at your fingertips. For some songs in our set, I can change the sound so easily from something very Jazz Bass like to something very Rickenbacker 4001 like really quickly. Very useful when doing 'A Town Called Malice'.. Good luck with the sale!
19.
No, no, no. 1. Does it have a famous name on the headstock? 2. Does it have kudos in the bass playing community? 3. I agree on 3. 4. Can I get it in the house under the wife-dar?
No. 4 especially!! Must say that I voted No.4 in the OP's poll - it's what plays/feels/sounds right that matters IMO.. I've had loads of big brand name basses in the past and have a few now, but that doesn't mean anything at the end of the day if you don't enjoy it when you pick up the instrument and play it. I had a Fender '66 Jazz about 14 years ago and I just didn't like it, so I sold it on.. Conversely, I had a short-scale, cheap old Kay bass some years ago that I sold and I still wish I had it because it was great fun to play..
20. Just bought back my SWR 210 that I sold to Jon last year.. Happily, it's in just the same condition as it was when i sold it to him 6 months ago. Anyway, the whole transaction was very pleasant; lovely cup of tea, got to try out some of Jon's very nice basses and spent far too long (probably) talking about playing styles, technique and just about anything bass-related. Most importantly though, Jon is a really brilliant chap who knows his stuff and is a real pleasure to deal with! Must do it again sometime Jon!!! Nik
21. Hi Mark I have a Roscoe Beck V and it's a fantastic bass! I've never tried the four-string model but as it has the same pick ups and electronics, I imagine it sounds pretty similar to the five.. Anyway, these bases offer a lot of tonal options because of the pick-up selector, the series/parallel switches and the tone control itself which is very useful.. However, because it's a passive bass, the output is quite low and that can be a problem if you're switching between basses during a gig for example. But the pay-off in terms of tone is worth it! There's some useful reference about the Five String model here that you may find useful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Roscoe_Beck_Bass http://www.roscoebeck.com/Gear.aspx http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...e+5-String/10/1 Hope that helps? Nik
22. That was quick!! Not surprised though at that price....
23.
I used to have a Triad - great cab
+1 I still have one and I love it! Always wanted to add another, but I have an SWR 210 to go with it now, otherwise I would have been very tempted by this! Anyway, the Triads are great cabs, lighter in weight than my old Peavey 410TVX and have a great full-range sound.. Good luck with the sale
24. Looks like a great job has been done on this bass! I doubt it'll ever make you happy as it is so why not just put in a J-type bridge p/u from Andy? Then it'll look great and sound great! Good luck with it whatever you decide to do...
