Absolutely - top babe top bassist. One of my fave bassists ever actually. M
+1 That's a great bass sound on 'Under pressure'.. There's also a clip on YouTube of Bowie & Annie Lennox doing Under Pressure and Lennox is nowhere near as good as GAD's vocal on this when you listen to them one after another! -
+1 ...going for the blocks was a good idea
Definitely.. really adds to what is already a very unique looking bass! Like dub_junkie, I'm curious about the low B on the 33" scale as well Mike - how does it compare to longer scale 5 strings?
Hi I've just got my hands on a pre EB Sabre. Can anyone recommend somewhere i can take it for a good service. It's in dire need of a set up, which is no great problem, but it's the electronics i'd really like to get checked over. I'm in the Herts, North London area. Cheers and Happy New Year
Might be worth phoning The Gallery in Camden and asking them who they'd recommend..
Solange's "Sandcastle Disco"
I love that tune! First song I played this year was Rasberry Beret (Prince) and the first bassline I've been working on is 'Sitting On the Dock of the bay' (Otis Redding) - both great fun to do..

Bowie At The Beeb 2000 / Gail Ann Dorsey
when Gail Ann Dorsey and Mark Plati swap bass & guitar roles in Bowie's band it's just to have a change- she can slap pretty well- see live versions of "the heart's filthy lesson". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6siuZChminw closeup at 1.20 and check out her singing Freddie's part & playing the bassline on "Under pressure" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNGQor3dED8 - now that's a feat of coordination! I watched that Gwen Stefani live show on 4music the other day, and GAD got a lead singing spot at the end of one song (presumably while the star went offstage to change outfits)- when you've got a voice like that you'll never be short of work.
Thanks for those; great! GAD is a very talented musician.... -
I don't know which guy you mean, do you have any more info?
The guy's name is Bill Clements
Depping with a function band in the Celtic Manor hotel in Newport, S. Wales. Long night - 6pm soundcheck, 5 other acts on first, finish our third set at 1.30am but the money is very good Cheers Alun
Very nice place, Celtic Manor IIRC.. We're gigging tonight at the 6 Bells in Chiddingly, East Sussex.. It's a small pub which holds 150 people and they've sold it out so it will be absolutely rammed.. Three sets, start at 9.30pm and finish at 1am; should be a great night! Happy New Year Folks - have a good one! -
Yamaha bb400s - value ? (pics added)
silverfoxnik replied to BigBeatNut's topic in General Discussion
Nope, it was definitely my Aria. Unless you sold it to Northern Sounds, Workington, in 1986 that is ;-)
+1 T'was definitely your old Aria Pete.. -
The instrument you're looking at is almost certainly post 1981. If you're lucky, Bassassasin will pop up and post the yamaha guitars on line catalog link, I can't find it. I have a BB800 from c. 1979, similar to the one that Silverfoxnik sold, except that mine is tasteful black rather than dogshit brown ;-) It's an excellent bass, I'm only starting to understand how good it is now that I have bought one or two more instruments enabling me to do a direct comparison. Pete
Here's the one I had: They were well made and mine played really well.. Some nice features too IIRC, i.e. some ornate engraving on the bridge that looked great! Typically, yet another bass I wish I hadn't sold!

Bowie At The Beeb 2000 / Gail Ann Dorsey
silverfoxnik replied to bass_in_ya_face's topic in General Discussion
'Tis indeed great. But that doesn't look like Gail on the bass. From where I'm sitting it looks like she's playing a white Strat and some crysty in a headscarf is playing the bass? Not sure though as I did have a lot of beer last night and I'm not 100% certain my vivion is back to normal.
+1 Gail is a great bass player, but whenever I've seen Bowie doing this number with this line up, she always swaps to guitar on this number for some reason.. She's obviously not 'a slapper'! -
And add: Leigh Gorman
+1 Definitely adding another vote for Leigh..
Good polar response = your cab sounding the same wherever you stand - much easier to get a great tone out front, on-stage and even over to your guitarist standing the far side of the stage. Almost like magic! Yes, great Xmas doing very little at all. Rather festively cold down here isn't it? Alex
OK, thanks Alex. I thought that was what you were saying but wasn't 100% sure.. Yep; too cold me thinks.... -
Yamaha bb400s - value ? (pics added)
silverfoxnik replied to BigBeatNut's topic in General Discussion
240 euros (240 pounds at current exchange rate)
That's a bit pricey I think but that's only my opinion of course.. As a comparison, I bought a 1986 Aria Pro II RBS Special fretless on this forum for approx £120 earlier this year and that was an excellent bass, quite similar to the Yamaha you're looking at.. -
For further clouding of said waters, I find the Spector's mids quits prominent too. Like this, I think...
That explains it then chaps.. Our ears weren't deceiving us!
This is almost identical to the bass I´ve been offered (the only real difference is condition). Is that what you meant by a p-bass clone ? I think it´s probably from the 70´s.
It looks like an early 80's model to me but I can't be certain by any means. And yes, to me that's a very, very nice P-Bass clone with it's own character.. What sort of figure are you talking? -
Herbie Flowers?
+1 Very good call! Sometimes with these Top 10 type threads, they seem to be more about who people think is the 'flashest bass player' or the 'fastest bass player' or the 'best slapping bass player' etc, etc.. which aren't the qualities that would ever define 'best' for me. Most of the people mentioned already are great players, each in their own unique way and as a result they bring different qualities to the fore, which have helped to define and develop the role of the bass guitar or bass as an instrument in modern music..
I don't like Muse but them bass sounds are just plain amazing...
+1 Not just great sounds but great playing and imagination too.. Anyone else astonished at the bass on 'Beat It' being played with a pick?
