Good polar response = your cab sounding the same wherever you stand - much easier to get a great tone out front, on-stage and even over to your guitarist standing the far side of the stage. Almost like magic! Yes, great Xmas doing very little at all. Rather festively cold down here isn't it? Alex
OK, thanks Alex. I thought that was what you were saying but wasn't 100% sure.. Yep; too cold me thinks.... -
240 euros (240 pounds at current exchange rate)
That's a bit pricey I think but that's only my opinion of course.. As a comparison, I bought a 1986 Aria Pro II RBS Special fretless on this forum for approx £120 earlier this year and that was an excellent bass, quite similar to the Yamaha you're looking at.. -
For further clouding of said waters, I find the Spector's mids quits prominent too. Like this, I think...
That explains it then chaps.. Our ears weren't deceiving us!
This is almost identical to the bass I´ve been offered (the only real difference is condition). Is that what you meant by a p-bass clone ? I think it´s probably from the 70´s.
It looks like an early 80's model to me but I can't be certain by any means. And yes, to me that's a very, very nice P-Bass clone with it's own character.. What sort of figure are you talking? -
Herbie Flowers?
+1 Very good call! Sometimes with these Top 10 type threads, they seem to be more about who people think is the 'flashest bass player' or the 'fastest bass player' or the 'best slapping bass player' etc, etc.. which aren't the qualities that would ever define 'best' for me. Most of the people mentioned already are great players, each in their own unique way and as a result they bring different qualities to the fore, which have helped to define and develop the role of the bass guitar or bass as an instrument in modern music..
And here's a comparison of on and off-axis response. The joy of a having a full crossover to a midrange speaker with a low crossover frequency and steep filter slopes is that you get smooth flat midrange response wherever you stand in the room - no woofer+tweeter cab can achieve this and no 3-way bass cab I know of uses a crossover topology that can achieve this. To get smooth off-axis response in the treble region would need an additional tweeter which I'm working on but I think this would be rather wasted on us bassists - should be an amazing PA cab though! Alex
Hi Alex, I'm not quite sure I can follow the technicalities of what you're saying exactly, so instead I look forward to hearing it in action at some point soon! Hope all's well and that you've had a good Xmas in the meantime... Nik -
I had a chance to compare my Eden Nemesis NA650 with Johnnylager's new Hartke LH1000 on Saturday. Using John's active Spector bass and with both amps alternating through my SWR Triad, I was really surprised to find that the Eden's inherent tone had more mids in it than the Hartke, and that was with tone controls on both amps set flat. To get the Eden closer to the tone of the Hartke, we had to dial in some of the Eden's 'enhance' control, which is effectively a mid-cut and bass/treble boost..

Yamaha bb400s - value ? (pics added)
silverfoxnik replied to BigBeatNut's topic in General Discussion
Don't know if this is any help Andy but two years ago I sold a BB800 on Ebay in average condition for about £125, which was a bit below what I thought it was worth (being a 25 year old Yamaha P-bass clone).. At the time, I was hoping for about £150 because of the quality of materials, construction, playability etc, etc... Hope that helps -
It's the end of the year, give or take. Time to take stock! Go on, folks. What did you get up to during the year?
That's a very good question!! Well, having a think it looks like this for the year, give or take a few bits or pieces: Basses in: Fender Jazz V Deluxe, Status Groove V, Aria Fretless, Axl fretless. Basses out: Lakland DJ5, Status Groove V, Aria Fretless, Axl fretless, Fender P-Bass copy, Extreme Jazz Bass copy Amps in: Peavey T-Max, Eden Nemesis NA650, Carlsbro Power Amp Amps out: GK 700RB, Peavey T-Max, Carlsbro Power Amp Cabs in: SWR Triad, SWR Goliath Jnr II Cabs out: Peavey 410 TVX, SWR Goliath Jnr II FX in: Nomad Bassman, Radial Big Shot I/O Misc in: OBBM cables, Fender Tweed Case, 4U Rack case Overall, it's been a year of more stuff going out than coming in and I'm happier that way as I'm slowly paring my gear down to suff I really like and stuff I really need and/or use. I have experimented with playing fretless this year and didn't get very far, mainly because I didn't give it the time it requires. And I also experimented with amps that have a valve and solid state pre-amp stage, but have gone back to solid-state amps and am quite happy with that (though I could be persuaded otherwise I expect...). Hopefully next year will be a similar trend with much less coming in, though I would like another 210 cab I think. No doubt there'll be a least one major GAS attack during the year but some electric-shock therapy should sort that out! Happy New Year folks! -
Sorry to hear the news Nick but I definitely think No 3 is the way to go for you...
...and my quest for less knobs seems to have paid off.
One for the best Basschat quote I think!! Good to see you today John - enjoy annoying your neighbours!
To be quite honest unless you get really, really lucky you won't find one for £150 - these are pretty uncommon basses & like all vintage Ibanez, are becoming very collectable. Expect to pay about twice that on Ebay - if you can find one. Jon.
+1 That was my first thought too, Jon.. last one I saw went for about £250-£275 I think on Ebay.

Johnnylager brought his new LH1000 over today (as he was coming to pick up my spare 1x15 cab for a while) and we got a chance to pair it up with my SWR Triad, his Spector and my Roscoe Beck V and it sounded really good! WalMan popped in for a listen too and I think we were all very impressed by how the Hartke sounded up against my Eden Nemesis; Johnny especially as it was his first chance to hear the LH1000 in action.. It's very easy to use and much, much warmer sounding than any previous Hartke amps I've heard!
