    Saw Incognito in 1995 at the Ilford Island (I think it was) and they were amazing.. Can't remember who was on drums but Max Beesley was on precussion and the amazing Randy hope Taylor on bass; fantastic. Always loved 'Apparently Nothing' by Young Disciples too.. Some really good British artists around then. Oh, and what a bassline on 'There's Nothing Like This'!

In that case, I think the GK would do a great job for you as the boost control plus overdriving the input volume does dirty the sound up nicely. The Eden I use has a facility that is supposed to do that in a similar way to the GK but it doesn't come close to my ears.. I don't know the Ampeg amp you've mentioned so can't comment on that one.

    Got a used 'Christmas Day' for recycling if anyone wants it? Comes with a bit of left over turkey (in-sandwich type), couple of beers, some advocat and a few nuts and crackers (pulling variety as opposed to the mad-uncle variety). On the downside, there's a few pairs of socks and some TV repeats included and all the presents have been opened.. But on a more positive note, there's no family arguments with this model as the mother-in-law protection circuits are still working perfectly! Oh, and the children's 'toyware' subscriptions are all up to date... Can be combined with older models but may not be compatible with the Christmas Day Deluxe 2009 version which is due out offically in about 180 days time! PM me if you need any further info or feel free to meet me at the recovery clinic (a.k.a. the pub) later for more details and a pint!

    I think to get the best advice possible from people here you need to give a few more clues about what you really like.. For example, you say that you don't have a particular sound but there must be some bass sounds/styles that you definitely like or prefer which would help narrow down the choices? So maybe some examples of your favourite bass players, music, info on your basses might help define the picture a bit. FWIW, I used to get a great sound with my GK 700 (older model, not the 700 RBII) and a Peavey 410 TVX and it cost me just over £350 second-hand but not everybody likes buying used gear. I currently use an Eden Nemesis head which is great, but it's very different to the GK head soundwise. I've also noticed that certain amps sound great with some cabs, but not all, so the combination of gear is an important factor too IMO. The new Hartke heads are getting a lot of praise around here at the moment and they're very simple in terms of their layout, as well as being great value for money so they'd be worth checking out further if you can? Like bass_ferret has said many times in this forum, we each hear things differently, so the best option will always be to check things out with one of your own basses/cabs if you can..     I'm a member on TB and use it mainly for info on gear that's more commonly used over there, but I never post anything. IMO and having read quite a lot of stuff on there, it does in places have a slighly sanctimonious 'Christian' ethic about it that to a godless/pagan/aetheist like me is a bit too much to deal with on a regular basis.. Otherwise, it's very good and very informative as a resource for all things bass. But I am shocked to learn that people have been banned from mentioning something as innocuous as the fact that the British Prime Minister plays guitar.. Overall, I much prefer Basschat which I like to think of is a very good reflection of the diversity of opinion, humour and personality of British people..

All the best for Xmas Nik Chris[/quote] Hi Chris, I had one very similar to this back in 1995 which I sold to Martin Petersen at The Gallery in the end and it was lovely! Needed the money though at the time, so it had to go.. More recently, I played Kiwi's at the SE Bash and that was fabulous too; there is definitely something different about the pre EB Stingray's IMO (and I have owned 2 EB 'Rays as well to make that comparison..). As you say though, this comes down to the difference between a passive and active basses and it seems you're like me in generally preferring the sound of a passive bass.. My old Wal Pro 2e is the only exception to that rule for me. Would love to catch up with you at some point Chris and thanks for the offer of a visit to Beedster Towers!     In true 'Carry on Basschat' fashion, Johnny drove over to Portsmouth on Sunday and diverted just enough out of his way to head into Littlehampton in order to shove some knobs through my door (ooh, err, Matron!!)     Over theyears I've owned both 4 & 5 string Wals and always preferred the 4 string models to the 5 string ones.. But I was lucky enough to have a play on one of the first 6 strings they ever made and it was absolutely wonderful.. To this day I don't really know why, but I much preferred the feel of the 6 string to the 5 string model.. If I had the money to buy one now, the 6 is what I'd go for..

More recently, I upgraded the TVX to an SWR Triad, which cost me £200, and then I changed the GK to an Eden Nemesis NA650 which cost £310. Those two items all together cost just over £500 and were bought here on Basschat - from very helpful and friendly Basschatters I might add - and they sound even better. So I think with your budget of £550 you've got a lot of options.. Good luck with it!
