Where did the Nu-romantic sound come from?
silverfoxnik replied to Pbassred's topic in General Discussion
Nice thread about my chosen specialised subject!...while we are talking about dodgy new romantic bands....I like the playing by a band called Fashion. Songs sound horribly dated now but some lovely bass
+ 1 I loved Fashion and did a few gigs with them at a long since gone venue called The Nashville in West Kensington.. Do you mean the first incarnation of the band with Luke, the 6ft 10" tall singer or afterwards when Dee Harris was vocalist? In both cases, it was Mulligan who played bass IIFC and he had a lovely black Ric 4003.. -
Bowie/Roxy/Velvet Underground/Kraftwerk > Numan/Foxx/Ultravox/Human league > Duran/Japan/depeche Mode etc. Nick rhodes and John taylor said they grew up listening to bands like the velvet underground, roxy and bowie iirc from interviews around the time they first made it big. they did a great live cover of steve harleys cockney rebel "come up and see me" and then the album "thank you" in the mid 90s which shows their influences http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thank_You_(Du...)#Track_listing (the drummer credits on that album are just mental btw)
Good point about Cockney Rebel being influential in this particular genre; if anyone's ever heard their song 'Sebastien', it's something any New Romantic band would have been proud of.. I seem to remember Duran Duran saying in an early interview that their template for the band was to cross Chic with the Sex Pistols.. And regarding Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, the very first incarnation of Adam & The Ants had a song in their set called 'Lou' which was about Lou Reed. One last thought about the New Romantic era is that it was definitely a reaction to Punk in the sense that Punk was supposedly 'anti-fashion' and 'anti-style- whereas New Romantics were obsessive about style and fashion.. -
Something tells me you're an expert on this Nik PS we're in Brighton for the Counting Crows on 11th December. Hiope we can catch up C
Don't know about that Chris, just my 2p worth.. I started playing in my first band in 1977 and though Punk was happening at that time, what came next musically with the whole post-Punk/New Romantic era which was much more interesting to me because it took all those musical elements that everyone has mentioned here, but it also had that Punk attitude that anything was possible.. Our drummer's going to that gig IIRC.. are you staying over in Brighton that night? If so, then let's hook up before or afterwards.. Be great to see you -
Where did the Nu-romantic sound come from?
silverfoxnik replied to Pbassred's topic in General Discussion
I always think of the New Romantic 'sound' as being a synthesis of David Bowie's 'Low' & 'Heroes' albums, Kraftwerk's 'Trans Europe Express' album and the soundtrack to 'Saturday Night Fever'.. It's no surprise that all the so-called 'Blitz Kids' who included Rusty Egan, Boy George and Steve Strange referred to Bowie as their ulimate musical idol and in return for that praise, Bowie featured them in the video to 'Ashes to Ashes'. -

Thanks for the interest.. Now SOLD pending the usual! (and it all happened much quicker than I anticipated) Hi Folks, I bought this cab about 4 months ago from dmz (who I hope won't mind me using his photo) to use in conjunction with my SWR Triad but have only used it twice in that time because the Triad sounds just fine on it's own to me.. So rather than have this sitting around doing very little and also, continuing with my new mission to slim down my gear to just the stuff that I really need, I thought I'd see if there's any interest for it here on Basschat? Here's dmz's picture of it but if anyone wants any more, I'll try and take some others tonight... I did use it on it's own at a wedding in July where we were really cramped for space and it sounded really good; punchy with good definition and coped with the low B on my Roscoe Beck pretty well. It's in good condition for it's age, is working perfectly and is built to the usual SWR high standard, particularly as this one was made before the company was bought by Fender (I think?).. Hence it features the older style SWR logo on the front. There's a review of it HERE which will give you a bit more information. Dimensions are 23" Wide x 15.75" High x 16.5" Deep. Iit weighs 55lbs and just to be clear, it's power handling is 350 watts at 4 ohms. I'm happy to ship it anywhere you want if you're prepared to pay the shipping, via APC or similar courier and of course, if anyone is local and wants to try it out first you're very welcome to come and have a cup of tea and some of my son's jammy dodgers whilst annoying my neighbours ! I paid £150 for it and would like to get that back if possible, though would be prepared to listen to sensible offers...Any questions, please PM me. Thanks for looking Nik

Peavey T-Max Amp For Sale, £185 plus P&P **SOLD**
I had the cash counted in my hand and the PM written! If I was actually playing bass in a band I would have bought this - it's my dream amp, but I can't see me ever playing bass in a band again. Have a depressed bump
Thanks for the bump cheddatom; I know you've always said in other threads that you wanted a T-Max and I can understand why.. Gotta agree with you that it'd be a bit pointless having an amp like this that puts out a lot of volume, without having regular gigs at which to use it! Maybe your gigging situation will change sometime soon and surprise you?
Hey Nick, you get through more amps than I do socks You should have bought my EBS rig. Still waiting for you to come round and try my MBII
Mind you John, socks are a lot cheaper so maybe that's where I need to focus my GAS these days!! Since starting playing again (for the first time in 12 years) about two years ago, I've had a Peavey Mk IV which I still have and am very fond of, a Hartke HA3500 which I didn't get on with at all, a Gallien Krueger 700RB which was great and I was stupid to get rid of and most recently, the T-Max.. So by my reckoning, that's 4 amps in 2 years which is about 1 amp every 6 months which isn't too bad a ratio bearing in mind I have been trying to work out what I really like and what I don't like with my gear.. I'm hoping that when the Eden arrives next week I'm going to have finally got it right, as I'm very happy at the moment with the SWR Triad, my Roscoe Beck 5 and the DBX MC compressor.. Just need the right amp to bring it all together! You're absolutely right; I'm a complete flake and haven't come round to check out the EBS Microbass as I should have done so I'll send you a PM or text you to work something out soon.. Cheers Nik -

** SOLD pending the usual ** Hi Folks I bought this amp a few months ago from Bottomfeed (who I hope won't mind me using his pictures for now) for £200 in order to try out the whole 'tubey goodness' thing, but have decided that I'm more of a solid-state luddite at heart! To be more specific, the T-Max sounds great with my Fender Jazz 5 but not so good with my Roscoe Beck 5 and because the Roscoe sounded so good with my Gallien Krueger 700RB, I've decided I need to go back to a solid-state head as the RBV is my main bass.. So, I've bought an Eden Nemesis head which means I need to sell this on. But before I put it on Ebay which is getting to be more and more of a rip-off, I thought I'd offer it here to Basschatters first. It's in good condition for a 10 year old amp and was serviced regularly by it's last owner, though the SKB rack case which it's housed in has seen better days! The Peavey T-Max bass head's were made in the USA and like most Peavey gear, are pretty much indestructible it would seem and the T-Max is sometimes quoted as being one of the best amps the company has ever made. As it happens, I still have an older Mark IV head which is solid-state and that is a testament really to how solidly these USA Peavey heads are made. Basically, it has two channels; 1 x tube and 1 x solid state channels that you can run independently or be combined for a wide range of tones. It also features a graphic EQ, effects loop, DI, switch for active and passive basses and has a variable crossover for bi-amping. This amp puts out a very loud 350 watts into 4 ohms or 500 watts into 2 ohms.. All of the info can be found on the Peavey site and here is a link to the manual: http://www.peavey.com/media/pdf/manuals/80302264.pdf. For more info, there's loads of great reviews of the T-Max HERE on Harmony Central I'm going to try to do some better pictures tonight and if anybody wants any more info, please PM me and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Like I said, I paid £200 but I'm looking for around £185 plus P&P for this classic Peavey head... Thanks for looking Nik

Bass is now SOLD!.. Pending the usual... Hi Folks I just recently bought this beautiful 5 string bass from Merton after having nagged him about it for a year, but sadly, it's just not for me due to having narrower string spacing than I'm used to. The bass itself is in great condition, works perfectly, plays like a dream and for a 34" scale neck it has one of the most rock solid low B's I've ever hear on a 5 string. Soundwise, it's very much in the 'Stingray' mould, having just one pick up in the 'sweet-spot' position. As the name suggests, for funk and groove stuff, it's absolutely perfect! I'll get some better pictures up tomorrow night but for now, details are that it's a black body with black pickguard and maple neck with rosewood fretboard. All round condition is about 8/10 for it's age I'd say.. basically, it's the same as this, but in black: And here's a close up of the body taken at the SE Bash in September: More info about the Groove bass can be found here.. By the way, this bass used to belong to the sadly missed, late Wigfinder General and therefore, has some real Bassworld/Basschat history attached to it. I'm looking for £200 for it, which is what I paid for it 3 weeks ago and I'm not looking for any trades to be honest.. For any more info, please PM me. Thanks for looking Nik

George Murray...forgotten hero
silverfoxnik replied to Bass_In_Yer_Face's topic in General Discussion
+1! Probably in my top five too. Love his playing on 'New Career in a New Town' from Low album. Apparently Andy Rourke learnt to play copping his basslines, & Murray was also a big influence on Derek Forbes. He played on all the Bowie 'Berlin Trilogy' , & some tasty basswork of his on Iggy Pop's The Idiot album too. Been trying myself for ages to find out what became of him too. Seems to have just disappeared.
+1 George Murray, along with Dennis Davis on drums, also played on 'Station to Station', the album that was the link between Bowie's 'Soul' period and the Berlin Trilogy.. It seems to be a complete mystery as to what has happened to Murray since the late 70's, which is a real shame as he was a fine player. Great to see support for him here though.. -
guitar shops in london that are accessible
silverfoxnik replied to Dread Bass's topic in General Discussion
My brother used to work for an awareness charity thing, and it wasn't before he mentioned it that I had even considered how difficult just getting around London is. I haven't been back in London for a couple of years, but I don't recall seeing any lifts in tube stations at all. More on topic, I can't think of a single instrument shop in centralish London that doesn't have a narrow doorway and/or stairs and/or 90 degree turn. As said before, good luck and congratulations on three years.
+1 Lots of venues around the country are inaccessible too.. The music industry isn't very good when it comes to disability issues tbh.. Good luck though, have a great day & congratulations on the 3 years! -
UPDATE: Thanks for the orders so far.. We still have these issues still available: 2007: May/June Bruce Foxton cover (6 copies available) July/Aug Stanley Clarke cover (1 copies available) Sep/Oct Lemmy cover (3 copies available) Nov/Dec Glenn Matlock cover (3 copies available) Nov/Dec John Paul Jones cover (1 copies available) 2008: May/June Peter Hook cover (5 copies available) July/Aug Charlotte Cooper cover (7 copies available) For some reason, no one has asked for the Charlotte Cooper issue? I don't know who she is or who her band are, but don't let the fact that she's on the front cover put you off as there's other good stuff inside the mag! Remember, it's all for good causes... Cheers Nik
B-U-M-P!

Isn't this the old 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' story really and I think we've all done it at some time or other? Good to be able to get some perspective though and realise what you had and are capable of... Does this mean more gear changes in the pipeline then Rob??
I'd try Charlie Chandler's Guitar Experience in Hampton Wick to get hold of Paul Herman there, or get another contact no. for him
Yep - spot on Mert! Paul is the person to speak to... The good news is that there is a future for Wal basses...
Missed the banter so thought I'd re-introduce myself Still a Precision kinda guy (1 x '77 maple, 1 x '78 rosewood, 1 x '79 maple fretless) but have realised that no one type of bass can do it all so have got back into 'rays (courtesy Marcus) and a pretty sexy '80 Ibanez Roadstar maple fretless. No doubt it will change, as it always does Still think Jazzes suck C
Hi Chris Only just seen this today - welcome back!! Hope all has been well in Beedster-Land Your reputation kind of precedes you, so no need to re-introduce yourself around here... But now you're back, we have had a rather stagnant 'For Sale' section that needs revitalising, if you're up for it?? Sounds like you're still a Leo Fender guy really, whether it's a P Bass or a Ray.. Nobody's perfect though, which must account for your blind spot where Jazzes are concerned! Nik
Very, very good basses. the sound of a Precision with alittle Rick thrown in, and a neck to die sofr, somewhere between a 'ray and a precision. Wide, flat and fast. Not a great solo bass and the slap leaves something to be desired, but lightweight, solid and powerful, and worth every peny of £300 against a modern bass of the same value (as long as it's in good nick - the finishes go very quickly which to my mind isn't a problem, but the electrics can be dodgy) Chris
hey Chris Great to see you back on here!! are you staying around..? Back on topic; lovely basses the Shergold/Haymans.. always fancied one myself! Nik
