Good luck! Make you enjoy it as it'll be over before you can say 'Basschat'...

Hi Folks, Some of you may know that Chris Franklin at Harrow Audio has been the closest link we've had to Pete 'the Fish' Stevens at Wal for some years now and that Chris has been supplying some Wal parts via his own shop here: http://www.harrowaudiohifi.co.uk/products....;Search=wa& But having looked at the Harrow Audio website today, what's really interesting to see is that Chris is now signposting people directly to Paul Herman () for Wal spares! It's pretty well documented that Paul is going to be taking over production of the Wal bass very soon but this new development must mean that things are pretty well advanced or almost there in terms of Wal basses starting up production again, which is great news! Just thought I'd share these positivite vibes with my fellow Wal owners and Wal fans here on Basschat! Nik
plus my Mach II fivestring: Check the hair of my kitten. She prefers to sleep on my sofa. It´s pretty useless to convince her that it´s my sofa btw, do you guys know where I can get replacement pots for my Wal?
Very nice basses! You can check in with Chris Franklin at Harrow Audio as he seems to know the answer to these questions. See here: http://www.harrowaudiohifi.co.uk/products....;Search=wa& And also, on the Harrow Audio site, Chris is now signposting people to Paul Herman () for Wal spares as Paul is going to be taking over production of the Wal bass very, very soon which is great news!
I am sorry to report that a fellow bass player Big Ed AKA Wigfindergeneral has died. I was informed this morning that he passed away. He was a top guy and will be missed by all those that knew him. Our thoughts go out to his family.
Thanks for posting this vmax, though it really is incredibly sad news! Like Merton and pete.young, I bought some gear (a bass and a cab) from The Wigfinder 2 years ago and during that brief time of dealing with him, I got to know him a little bit. He had an absolutely fantastic sense of humour and had me cracking up every time we spoke on the phone.. When Basschat started up I remember via a PM or two, Ed saying things hadn't been good for him for a while.. As you say, he was a top guy and will be very much missed by his family. If there's any information you can provide so that I could send a sympathy card or flowers, I'd appreciate it. Nik
Cheers. That was when I could play Scared the bajeezus out of me!!! Recipe 1) Take your master tape on metal spools 2) Place in oven & cook on very low heat for approx 3 hours 3) Leave to cool completely 4) Put on tape machine & press play 5) garnish with EQ compression & serve with a light white wine But it worked & 22 year old tapes that were a swine to transfer first time around seem to have come out all shiny & new
Does it work for very old bass players as well??
When the Roscoe Beck V arrived I was just in awe! it instantly felt like I was being re-united with an old friend, it was great. To be honest I am so so happy with it and glad I have found a bass for me, even thought the last bass I thought I would click with would be a fender V.
Exactly the same for me when I got my RBV last October.. only ever had that before with my Wal!
Resurrecting this thread briefly as I have recently found a load of multitracks from years back and having had them baked managed to get them converted to digital so I can re mix them - in the case of a couple of tapes for the first time properly as we had a major change of style shortly after ther were recorded when the keyboard player left. Anyway, getting to the point, I seem to recall someone asking what the passive Wal Pro's sounded like. The tapes I am working on at the moment were recorded in 1986 so I had the Wal Pro1 but am 99.99% certain had done nothing to it as yet - certainly the actives did not get put in until 1996. Attached is a short bass & drums only clip of my Pro 1 in its original single pup / passive glory. If I remember rightly it was recorded DI'd with no amp, and all I have done now is add a touch of compression and a very light mid cut. Strings would probably have been Ropewounds or Elites (if they were produced that long ago) and played with a plectrum (as I only started using fingers years later)
Sounds great; nice tight playing too! That baking technique works really well, obviously....
Sadly until I pay off credit card I can't start working on my end of the bargain! Plus added some positive "complications" which I'll explain in Sept when I see ya...
Very cryptic... Have sent you a PM as we're heading rapidly off-topic!

Recently bought a case from Russ for my RBV and as well as the case, he threw in a free gig for me and my kids at the Bognor Rox festival!! Unbelievable generosity... Really good band too!

That's a very nice looking bass! Is it me, or did JD 'borrow' some design ideas from Pangborn?
I regret selling my MIM Jazz 5. Well, no I don't, I regret not taking out the J-Retro when I sold it. Fool! Hopefully I won't regret selling anything ever again but at some point I suspect a bass or two, plus a rig will have to go (Actually, one bass will definitely go depending on when I can afford the Streamline 5er and when Nik can persuade Mrs Silver Fox to allow a Groove into the home!)
I'm working on it Mert..
ok, I kinda get what's being said about EQing bass to the kickdrum (I understand that they're there to compliment each other) but does that mean trying to make your bass sound like the kick drum (e.g. kinda boomy/wooly in the case of my regular drummer) or to compliment it, like the way the snare and a tom sound when hit together?
No, it's not about making the kick drum and the bass sound the same, it's about making sure that they work well together. In simple terms, if the kick drum is tuned really tight and punchy then it's better to e.q. the bass guitar frequencies lower to provide the warmth and low end.. And vice-versa of course.. Obviously, there's more too it than that but it's about these important elements in the rhythm section working together in a complimentary way.
There is a lovely story dating back to when Van Halen were supporting Ted Nugent in the early days and TN wanted to know the secret of Eddie Van Halen's sound. So he tried his gear out and sounded like ..... Ted Nugent!!! Ref: eqing the bass vd bass drum. That may apply in rock etc but, in jazz, you are better off eqing against the ride cymbal as it can kill your sound if you don't get it right.
Good story! Doesn't matter what type of music you play, there is always a sonic relationship between the different instruments in a band setting which can be ruined by poor use of e.q. or improved by sensitive use of e.q.
