Michael Brook and Daniel Lanois among my favourite producers, though they're guitarists. Larry Klein and Bill Laswell are other bassists/producers to know. Not forgetting, of course, Brian Wilson.
+1 for Brian Wilson and what about Macca?
Just been listening to Bowies "Singles" album, absolutely mesmerising bass lines, Ashes to Ashes, Fashion, Boys, China Girl..... WOW. Production, amazing. This may lead on to a great producers thread. So here goes....
+1 Bowie's my absolute all-time favourite artist and I started listening to his stuff in 1972, a few years before I first picked up a bass. So the early playing of The Spiders From Mars bassist, Trevor Boulder really influenced me, along with Dennis Dunnaway Alice Cooper's bassist. In both cases, their bass playing was always very musical and creative, doing much more than just playing root-note stuff so that the bass lines were really integral parts of the song. There's lots of other great bass lines on Bowie records too.. For example, the descending bass line in the chorus of 'Changes' absolutely makes it for me and is a great hook in itself.. And later on, when Bowie had Dennis Davis on drums and George Murray on bass, some of the bass lines on 'Station to Station' and 'Low' in particular are brilliant! Another +1 for Tony Visconti as well...

I always use the tone control on my bass in order to vary how bright the bass is from song to song. In my band we have to play songs by bands as diverse as The Killers to The Temptations, so the bass sounds required can be very different across a two hour set! Luckily, the tone control on my Roscoe Beck 5 string is excellent and offers a lot of variety for a passive bass, so I can get some great results without too much effort.
So, is it time to start working out lift-share type deals? Even if popularity dictates that I'm taking my full stack, I'm still going to have 4 empty seats, and in the current socio-plitical climate this seems like a freakin waste! Should I start a new thread for this?
That's a good idea! BTW, there'll be another thread starting later tonight (when I get home from rehearsal) with all the details for the two rooms, workshops, speakers etc... -
Could that be because the rig looks 'old school'...
Now you come to mention it, your rig does look really 'old school' until you look closely and see it's totally up to date kit. Good combination!
May I present, Brian Fox: I advise that there should be no mugs/jugs/cups/vases/pint glasses of coffee near the monitor or keyboard whilst watching.
Thanks Josh - that was hilarious! I kept flicking the clips backwards and forwards and it sounded like he was playing the same riff at each point so I hate to think what a whole gig of it would sound like. He looks like the bass playing equivalent of The Big Lebowski; imagine Jeff Bridges playing a sad loser of a bluesman/bassplayer frontman who doesn't realise just how awful he and his band is?? But as the saying goes, truth is always stranger than fiction and it looks like Brian Fox is proof of that!
No, just cheaper ones so that can I stand my beer on them. I'm offering to bring this beauty along as a cupholder:
Mmm; looks good that Trace! I had one very similar in the late 80's.. How old is your?
+1. Quirky stuff nice and all but it would be good to have some more bread and butter stuff.
Do you mean it in the sense that we can contrast & compare standard gear with more 'boutique' stuff? If so, I think that would be useful...
Everything, ever.
That just about sums it up!! Been popping in from time to time on this thread today and it's really made me laugh a lot, so thanks for that! Still raining down here a bit though.... Can't beat a great British summer, eh... or would that be over-rating it???

Hi Folks, Don't know about where you are, but it's been nothing but thunderstorms and pouring rain here on the south coast this morning! To help cope with the boredom, here's a silly question to pass the time and have a bit of fun whilst taking a few pot-shots at each others bass-related favourites.. So, in your opinion, what's the most over-rated bass, bass gear or bass-related product you can think of and why? Or what do you just love to hate? Here's my top 3: 1. Sei Jazz 5; too many of these being sold here lately, guess they look great but are too clean and polite sounding unless you play in a jazz-fusion trio? 2. Ashdown amps & cabs; wooly sound, pointless retro design, not easy to get a decent sound out of and definitely a case of 'style over substance'. 4. Bartolini pick-ups; bland, polite & sterile. Definitely massively over-used and over-rated! Nothing too serious remember - just a bit of silly Sunday fun. Nik

This thread is bad for my recurrent G&L GAS... please stop now! Nice basses, especially the SB-2
Keep in mind that I think we're coming up on two years since Pete had to move out of his shop. Plus he had been slowing down for a while. (I assume this is the case based on what's been said on the Wal forums.) So there was very likely a long list in "the book". Paul has to get many custom parts made, (bridges, knobs, pickups, electronics!), and fill that long list before he advertises anything. Hopefully he'll get to the point where he can deal with parts etc... soon. I hope all that stays the same.
Good point; Paul obviously needs some breathing space to get this new venture off the ground. There was some trouble with long-overdue orders in the last days of Wal under Pete and I would imagine that Paul will want to get things off to the best possible start he can to restore any goodwill that might have been lost..

GAS! Is there a cure? Do we want to be cured?

Remember, GAS is for life, not just for Christmas! -
Was speaking to Phil Mulford last night at a gig of his, he was at Paul' s place a week or so ago and there are a number of Wal bodies and necks in various states of finish hanging on the walls. Yay!
This news is getting better!!

Unfortunately not; you are a lucky man!
I think your Pro's a sweet bass Nik, and it sounds even better!
Thanks! That's just saved me hundreds of ££s on therapy -
That's a stunning collection! I love the 1979 fretless and the Black Polyester 5 string, though they're all great! Don't often see a Wal with a different brand pick up in it so I guess that makes the '79 Pro quite unique...
Hallo to all of you. First, I'm sorry for my english language that is very bad. I'm registered just now, I'm writing from Genoa, Italy and I'm a low level bass player. I would like to propose to you my problem: I'm a sitasfacted owner of one ARIA PRO II LASER ELECTRIC BASS CLASSIC, bought in the far 1987. My problem is relevant to the wiring: there are a lot of wires disconnected from the pre-amplifier PCB. Are there some of you that can help me to restore the wiring with some pictures, drawings, schematics or others? Thank you very much!! Best regards. Guido
Hi Guido and welcome to Basschat! This question should go in the 'Repairs and Technical Issues' Forum really, which is here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showforum=12 Although I have an Aria bass, I don't know anything about them from a technical point of view so I can't help you.. But there's plenty of people here on Basschat who probably can, so put your question in the right section and I'm sure you'll get some replies. Nik
