Thou shalt not covet thy neighbours' basses
silverfoxnik replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in Bass Guitars
Should those of us whose bass(es) are obviously not coveted by any other Forumite now develop an inferiority complex?
Just what I was thinking... Me and my basses (or should that be my basses and I?) may need therapy to get over the deep sense of rejection that this thread has caused.. -
I thought the knobs were gone, gone, gone. Chris would have to say though. Pots can be sourced but require a minor mod if you're replacing the original Radiohms.
You might be right Dunc; it's nearly 2 years since I looked into it for myself..

+1 Thanks, that was really good! His playing and the band still sounds fresh to me..
Thanks for the advice. So are Laklands generally passive then and if so do they have space for a preamp to be installed? Those Sadowsky external preamps do look good but generally speaking the less gear to cart about the better!
AFAIK, the Lakland Jazz basses are generally passive but it's not a problem because there's been lots for sale here on Basschat that have had a John East or Auderre pre-amp installed, so it can't be that difficult to do..

Very nice!!

My USA fender Jazz 5 is pretty good though the B string isn't as good as some other 34" scale 5 string basses I've owned, like a Stingray 5 for example. The stock pre-amp in mine was replaced with an EBS circuit so I can't comment on what the original sounded like but I don't think they've had much positive press in the 10 years and more that Fender has had a 5 string bass on the market! Having owned a Lakland Skyline DJ5, I have to say that the Lakland is a much better 'jazz' bass than the Fender, which sounds crazy to say, but it's true. In the 5 string market, Fender has been seriously outperformed by so many other makers it's untrue.. A testament to their complacency I think. But if you go the Lakland route, you've got to bear in mind that it's a 35" scale (which some prefer and some don't) and it is going to be more expensive to get hold of than a Fender. Plus, you'll need to install a pre-amp which will add additional cost.. A Bacchus might be a good option as they look really good value when they come up for sale here from time to time?
I dont quite know whether I have put this in the right place, or even why I put it up but have a look anyway. I was having a read through some old magazines the other day and came across Christain Olde Wolbers (ex Fear Factory Bass player and now guitarist) playing a custom shop Fender which more than resembled a Roscoe Beck. I then also noticed Fear Factory's new bass player Byron Stroud with the same bass and another very Rock looking fender V. Now I have a Roscoe Beck and love it more than anythin but have always fancied something black with maple board and matching head with block inlays and here it is, this is my perfect bass (with an additionof different pickguard) I love the headstock, it almost looks like the flared 70's strat ones. I realy want one of these to go with my beck so now the descision is, who do I get to build it for me, or do I do it myself with parts?
Great idea! That looks great in black... Like you though, I wouldn't dream of making any changes to my RBV. There was a set of RBV pick ups for sale on Ebay in the States last week, so getting some for a custom build may be possible, though admittedly, not very easy as those were the first accessory for a Roscoe Beck bass that I think I've seen on ebay in a couple of years... I did consider bidding on them and putting them in my Fender Jazz 5 but then decided against it.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Roscoe-Beck-5...idZp1638Q2em122 Aren't the dual coil Nordstrand pick ups that were in Tayste's Valenti #11 that was for sale recently pretty similar? I think Shuker might be the best bet in the UK but maybe Nino Valenti would be worth talking to as he's a member on Basschat as well?
Cool! I wonder if I can get some original control knobs for my Pro IIE..?
Do you mean the actual pots or the knobs Rich? Only Chris at Harrow Audio has been selling replacement knobs for the Pro models a while now..

Nice Ric! What are the others making up your rather spiffing collection..?

Hi Folks, Some of you may know that Chris Franklin at Harrow Audio has been the closest link we've had to Pete 'the Fish' Stevens at Wal for some years now and that Chris has been supplying some Wal parts via his own shop here: http://www.harrowaudiohifi.co.uk/products....;Search=wa& But having looked at the Harrow Audio website today, what's really interesting to see is that Chris is now signposting people directly to Paul Herman () for Wal spares! It's pretty well documented that Paul is going to be taking over production of the Wal bass very soon but this new development must mean that things are pretty well advanced or almost there in terms of Wal basses starting up production again, which is great news! Just thought I'd share these positivite vibes with my fellow Wal owners and Wal fans here on Basschat! Nik

She prefers to sleep on my sofa. It´s pretty useless to convince her that it´s my sofa btw, do you guys know where I can get replacement pots for my Wal?
Very nice basses! You can check in with Chris Franklin at Harrow Audio as he seems to know the answer to these questions. See here: http://www.harrowaudiohifi.co.uk/products....;Search=wa& And also, on the Harrow Audio site, Chris is now signposting people to Paul Herman () for Wal spares as Paul is going to be taking over production of the Wal bass very, very soon which is great news!
I am sorry to report that a fellow bass player Big Ed AKA Wigfindergeneral has died. I was informed this morning that he passed away. He was a top guy and will be missed by all those that knew him. Our thoughts go out to his family.
Thanks for posting this vmax, though it really is incredibly sad news! Like Merton and pete.young, I bought some gear (a bass and a cab) from The Wigfinder 2 years ago and during that brief time of dealing with him, I got to know him a little bit. He had an absolutely fantastic sense of humour and had me cracking up every time we spoke on the phone.. When Basschat started up I remember via a PM or two, Ed saying things hadn't been good for him for a while.. As you say, he was a top guy and will be very much missed by his family. If there's any information you can provide so that I could send a sympathy card or flowers, I'd appreciate it. Nik
It's like two big eyeballs staring at you.
+1 Scary.. And OTPJ's phrase 'biblical sound' is even scarier! Very nice sounding gear though, whenever I've heard it in action...
Cheers. That was when I could play Scared the bajeezus out of me!!! Recipe 1) Take your master tape on metal spools 2) Place in oven & cook on very low heat for approx 3 hours 3) Leave to cool completely 4) Put on tape machine & press play 5) garnish with EQ compression & serve with a light white wine But it worked & 22 year old tapes that were a swine to transfer first time around seem to have come out all shiny & new
Does it work for very old bass players as well??
When the Roscoe Beck V arrived I was just in awe! it instantly felt like I was being re-united with an old friend, it was great. To be honest I am so so happy with it and glad I have found a bass for me, even thought the last bass I thought I would click with would be a fender V.
Exactly the same for me when I got my RBV last October.. only ever had that before with my Wal!
Resurrecting this thread briefly as I have recently found a load of multitracks from years back and having had them baked managed to get them converted to digital so I can re mix them - in the case of a couple of tapes for the first time properly as we had a major change of style shortly after ther were recorded when the keyboard player left. Anyway, getting to the point, I seem to recall someone asking what the passive Wal Pro's sounded like. The tapes I am working on at the moment were recorded in 1986 so I had the Wal Pro1 but am 99.99% certain had done nothing to it as yet - certainly the actives did not get put in until 1996. Attached is a short bass & drums only clip of my Pro 1 in its original single pup / passive glory. If I remember rightly it was recorded DI'd with no amp, and all I have done now is add a touch of compression and a very light mid cut. Strings would probably have been Ropewounds or Elites (if they were produced that long ago) and played with a plectrum (as I only started using fingers years later)
Sounds great; nice tight playing too! That baking technique works really well, obviously....
