1.
The attached file might help. It's a Wal flyer. Not sure where I got it from, perhaps at the old Music Show when it used to be at Earls Court, but presumably when I was dreaming
Thanks Al, I used to have that one years ago... here's some more info that I have lurking around that may be of interest.. Nik
 2.
Thanks for injecting some common sense into the thread, Nik!
That was you who did that Rich, not me! It made me stop and think before my next post, which is a good thing... On the basis of what's being said in this topic, I'm going to check out some of these albums so I can learn a bit more. Cheers Nik
 3.
Here was me thinking this was going to be a nice thread celebrating the coming together of three of the greatest bass players of our time in the name of entertainment, but once again, it's all sinking into the mire of the "Musicians Wars" thread. Why not let's all criticise what we can't do ourselves? Sad, quite sad.
Hi OTPJ, Well said and let's hope this doesn't descend into the mire of another "Musicians Wars" thread, because as you say, this is a quite unique event and a great learning opportunity. My comment was made in response to the OP's question and not consciously intended to start another huge round of negativity.. But thinking about it, I can see now how easily such comments can be taken the wrong way. So in the interests promoting harmony around here and avoiding more negativity happening, let me say that though it's not my personal cup of tea, [S][M][V] could well be the bass event of the decade! Nik
 4. That's a very nice looking bass, Matt. Just wish I had something that I could trade as I've always fancied a G&L.. But my two 4 stringers; the Wal & BC Rich Eagle, are almost umbilically attached to me and ain't going anywhere... So best I can do is offer you a free BUMP on me. Good luck with it! Nik
 5.
Thanks for that. Pro-wise, missed one about a year ago (could be 2). It was advertised in a shop and I rang to get pictures sent. Unfortunately somebody walked in and bought it while I was still waiting for the pics....(probably someone here!). I know, should've bought it. It was only £899 (& black IIRC). In fact it was probably the one in your avatar!
If the shop was GAK in Brighton then it could be.. I bought my one from fellow Basschatter Gwilym in 2005 and he'd had it less than a year then I think? Apparently he nipped into GAK to have a nose around and walked out with what is now my bass.. Lucky for me that he did is all I can say!
 6.
Hmm... I'm thinking the latter. Great players, for sure. But there's something inherently dull about soloing bassists!
I kind of feel the same really.. I love great bass playing in the context of a great song more than I love amazing bass playing virtuosity..
 7.
Disco surely! Alex
Dub....? amongst many other things....
 8.
I have a left handed 4 string Wal fretless, I have owned it for about 12 years. It hardly gets played, just in the studio and when I am feeling particularly splendid! I am almost ashamed to say that I know next to nothing about it. It says N.J. Custom on the head, I can get the serial number from the plate (I think). The person before me didn't treat it too good, there is a small gauge on the neck and the body is going that weird grey/white in very small areas - in some ways it makes it look properly classic, but it must have been stunning when new. It absolutely sings, I can get Pino like sounds, Jaco like sounds and it always gets a reaction on the tone and sound from band members. There is a peculiar knob system where the tone is almost Wah Wah and can be honed in for a tighter sound. The thing is heavy though, I will try and get some pictures of it on here. Rock on. Rob
Hi Rob, The letters N.J. are probably the initials of the bass player who had it made for them. If you know the serial number, you can check out more about your bass here: History of Wal Basses: http://www.trevorandthea.eclipse.co.uk/wal_history.htm and the Wal database here: http://www4.cs.fau.de/~koesters/Privat/Wal/walspec.html Sounds like a lovely bass.. It'd be good to see some pictures if you have time.. Nik
 9.
Is there going to be a disco then?
Can you imagine the music that'd be played at a bass players disco...??
 10.
2nd hand prices are occasionally hugely inflated down Denmark St due to the London factor, as well as the fact it’s in a shop and that they’re gonna try their luck to see if they can find a rich buyer who doesn’t really understand what they’re buying as well as current market trends. ‘Denmark Street Guitars’ have been trying to sell a Trace Elliot V4 combo for £1800 for the last year or so, and fundamentally it’s 2nd hand. To put that price in perspective, there’s one selling for £1k on there at the moment that looks to be in really good condition, but some people are saying that it’s still overpriced at £1k, let alone £1800. This bass looks to be in fantastic condition though, so it should achieve a price towards to top end of the current market value, but I don’t really know what that would be at the moment.
I lived in London for 30 years before happily escaping to the south coast in 2000. In all of the time I was a working musician in London, Denmark Street prices were hugely over-priced; they were then and they still are now.. IMO, anyone who spends their hard-earned on guitars in Denmark Street has more money than sense! Back on topic, this is a lovely bass and good luck with the sale!
 11.
I'm hoping to make it down, Guildford's not too far from me and I ain't gigging that Saturday (for a change!). If so, I'll bring my GA24 Custom, GBIV and maybe lug my Aguilar DB750 down, in case the venue fancies putting in some new windows! More laters...
Cool - must make sure I have my public liability insurance sorted by then!
 12.
guys i just finished my first gig with the avenger, must admit its a fantastic bass!! it just played great! i couldnt be happier! lol the neck is amazing! sandberg isnt related however they are made in the same country!
Great! Always takes at least one gig to really know what you think of a new bass.....
 13. We've just bought an excellent 8u rack case from Ian for our band for an unbelievably reasonable price! I didn't get to meet Ian myself as our guitarist Tony did all the running around.. Suffice to say that Tony was made very welcome over there in Leigh-on Sea by Ian and he's very pleased with the case! So, thanks for everything Ian and to quote Bassmandan: "Highly recommended, A+++ as they say in ebay-land!" Cheers Nik
 14.
and a spanking?
Nope - spanking denied! However, what you Ken Smith and Celinder owners get up to in the privacy of your own homes is your own business..
 15. Definitely a great idea! Following on from OG's comments I'd say that if the same thing is played each time a change is made, it'd make sense to have the same person play it each time as well to keep all things as equal as possible.. Look forward to hearing the outcome of your get-together.. Have fun!
 16.
FS: Fender Bass by Klaus Blasquiz (paperback book) £6 posted (*anorak not included)
I have the very same one.. and the same book too
 17.
I second that. Nik's Wal has a really nasty tone, but "nasty" in a good way!!!!!!
Cheers !! And yes CK, it does involve tweaking a few knobs.. Well, 5 to be precise...
 18.
See here
Ahh - I see! Cheers, Mert...
 19.
http://www.cloverbasses.com/index.php?id=42#c392 thats prob easier that trying to explain it!! lol
Thanks - that's a very diverse set of basses they have on offer and the 3 p/up model like yours looks particularly intriguing! Look forward to hearing your review...
 20.
Very good summary. If anyone wants to dig more, try here... Wal History I have a ProIIe which can sound very much like a MkI or, as some have described, a PBass on steroids. One warning... Pro electronics are aging and some parts may be impossible to replace. It wouldn't keep me from buying one but I wouldn't make it an everyday bass. dunc
Hi dunc, Absolutely - Trevor's site is a fantastic introduction to the Wal history and is full of really interesting and unusual info that surprises even old gits like me who've owned Wals for years.. I hear what you're saying about the Pro models and I do worry about what I'll do if /when the circuitry starts to go wrong in mine? And partly for that reason and partly because I get worried it'll get damaged, I've stopped gigging with it this year. Mind you; I was using it for the first time in ages yesterday and it sounded just amazing.. So I'm planning to give it a whirl at a couple of gigs next week just to remind myself how lucky I am
 21.
Silverfox - I might be able to make this after all. Got to be at the outlaws in the PM but could do a drive-by in the morning. Not sure what gear I can bring as I'll be en-route to East Anglia but might be able to bring a G&L Tribute if anyone wants to have a go. Maybe my Trace head too?
Great news Matt! It'd be really good to bring the Tribute if you can because they've generated a bit of interest here in recent months, especially over the USA vs Tribute debate.. WalMan's USA L2500 will be there so a direct comparison of the two would be very interesting! CK - how come you're leaving your band??
 22. Very interesting looking bass, Steve! Unusual looking pick up configuration and circuitry - what does it all do exactly? Hope it goes well tomorrow night! Nik
