Need help sending a bass through the post.

You can usually take your parcel direct to the courier's Depot in most cases. Certainly Parcelforce, APC and Fed Ex allow for that option and I've used those 3 firms before without any problems... -
Tobias Killer B 5 on Ebay (Why won't it sell? :-(
silverfoxnik replied to bkman42's topic in Basses For Sale
I think you've got a few things going against you. First, the market is completely down on used instruments at present. Second, the colour is one that would need the right buyer to come along. Finishes like black, sunburst or natural will always get a lot more interest. Third, a lot of prospective buyers may associate the name Tobias with a product that's of a very different level to this instrument. Sorry I couldn't be of any help, but like a lot of people, I'd say you're just a victim of a very poor used market.
+1 I'd also recommend that you takes some more photos, preferably outdoors in some sunshine, to really show it off. Tobias basses have a beautiful shape and you just can't tell that from your pictures. Might also be useful to namecheck some of the bassists that have used Tobias basses over the years and to provide a link to the reviews of Tobias basses on Harmony Central here: http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...Killer+B-5/10/1 Good luck! -
Students squire almost as good as my MIA Fender
silverfoxnik replied to Jezyorkshire's topic in Bass Guitars
A while ago i got a squire jazz bass made in china for one of my students and before giving it to him i did a bit of tweaking to get the best out of , truss rod , string height, intonation. This weekend at his home where he has his lesson i thought i would take my fender jazz mia and my Markbass combo and see what differences there were now it had time to settle in a bit. The Squire actually sounded better through a crap 15watt amp than my Fender and through the Markbass combo my fender was just marginally better having a little more complexity to the tone. The neck on the Squire is better as i had to have my fender worked on by a luthier as it had a different relief on each side of the neck and the Squires neck is actually more comfortable towards the headstock. My fender cost £800 with case and the Squire was £125 with a cardboard box, considering the differences, which one would you be happy to get knocked about in the car/van/ pub ? It seems to my ears also that the pickups in both basses are of equal quality, so what am i paying for when i buy a mia fender? cheers, Jez.
I know exactly what you mean! Last year, I bought a cheap Jazz copy made in China and badged here as an 'Extreme'.. Cost £85. Reason was that I'd just traded in my 80's Tokai Jazzsound for a 5 string, so i was really missing that Jazz bass 'thang'.. Anyway, like you I took it home and set it up and lo' and bleedin' behold, it played & sounded brilliant! Well, for £80 it did.. As I got more used to it, I realised that it would benefit from better pick ups, but nevertheless, the quality of the woods and the workmanship is simply unbelievably good for the money! To be honest, I don't know how they do it? -
Welcome back ... It's just like riding a bike, but with cramp and a few signs of arthritis
+1 Welcome Deaver! 22 years is a long time without playing.. I did 12 and didn't realise how much I missed it until I started playing again! Love the fact that you bought a nice, shy & retiring Thunderbird bass to ease you back into things gently....
for one off emotion hit probably from Twin Peaks "Sycamore Trees" that Black Lodge was an acid flashback, especially those bloody curtains.
+1 Twin Peaks is one of my all time favourites.. Angelo Badalamenti, I believe? And I have to concur with the mentions for: West Side Story - Stephen Sondheim & Leonard Bernstein at their very, very best! Blade Runner - one of my favourite films.. unforgettable Dune Paris, texas Dirty Harry And to add another two: The Draughtsman's Contract - Michael Nyman and just to keep the David Lynch theme going, Blue Velvet..

This is a seriously good bass! As you said Isaac, it was mine and I only moved it on because, with my Roscoe Beck V becoming my main gigging bass, it wasn't being used and I thought it was too good an instrument to just be sitting on a stand at every gig.. I've owned a Ken Smith Designs Proto-Jazz 5, played a couple of Sei Jazz 5's and also tried Birdy's Sadowsky Jazz 5s at the Bash in March and in my opinion, this DJ5 is more authentically a 'Jazz Bass' than any of them. It's as the Fender Jazz was originally designed to be; classic styling, simple to use but beautiful sounding... I'd better stop now otherwise I'm going to want it back Anyway, just to say good luck with the sale and have a free BUMP on me! Whoever buys this bass won't be disappointed and Isaac is a really good guy to deal with!
Anyhow the gig went really well- loads of people in the venue- Owner was amazed and has booked us for a monthly Soul night and has agreed to increase our pay by 300%. My Marcus and Marshall VBA and 4 X 12 filled the venue with warmth- we had a really simple rig- 900w Mackie active speakers, desk and backline ( no monitors ) -back to the old days!! The band really stepped up and the musicians there were all impressed that it was our first gig- said it sounded great. We also arranged another function gig with one of the audience- result!! It just goes to show that if you invest a bit of time in what may seem like a useless gig things turn out for the better in the end. The band are all looking forward to our next gigs and certainly, when the Soul Nights start we will be able to put in some off the wall stuff to keep our interest up ( and the audience )
Great story! We played at The Elms in Worthing last night and it was one of those gigs where everyone in the band was a bit below par! It took me two-thirds of the gig to get up to what I would consider a decent level of playing.. Up till then my hands felt like they were coated in treacle!! Odd thing (or is it a sad thing?) is that the audience didn't seem to notice our failings at all?? They were quite happily singing, cheering and dancing the night away.. Playing a wedding at some caravan park in Bognor tonight the thought of which is enough to make me want to take up basket-weaving or patchwork quilt making instead..
Apart from being Redhill's premier bassist, he's a thoroughly nice chap who gave me a fist full of money for a bass I was selling. Cheers! Hamster
+1
1. Mark King inspired a whole load of us to become technically better bass players. Surely that's worth something?? 2. Yes, we know that he's a one-trick pony that only does one special thing, (the very fast quadruplet slapping) but he does it admirably well. 3. Anyone who calls any of the virtuoso players "unmusical" is severely missing the point. Is it because you're sick as the proverbial parrot that you can't do it yourself? I hear people say the same about Victor Wooten on here & he is unmistakably the most musical bass player I've ever heard. Without players like Jaco, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten & Mark King, I'd never have been inspired to become the bass player I am today. I'm sure that goes for many others on here as well.
As Crez said, 'well said'.. In the end this is all a case of 'one man's meat is another man's poison' etc, etc! As can be seen from my previous post in this thread, I'm not a MK fan and I'm most definitely not a Level 42 fan, but there's no doubting MK's impact.. I'd much rather listen to Larry Graham or Bootsy Collins than MK anyday and even more, I'm much happier just listening to songs and great music than albums that are led by bass playing (such as MK or Victor Wooten etc) but each to his own.. One good thing for me about MK though is that I think he helped put British bass playing back on the map...
A good price? - If selling - £400 - £450 If buying - £350 - £400 Hamster
So, about £400 then? When I sold mine it was for about £500 which included the John East Pre, so about £400 if it's 100% stock and in good condition wouldn't be unfair I think....
Pre Mark King slap was great, a feel thing, a funky groove. From Mark King onwards slap became a speed freak, technical exercise. Boring!!
+1
What's your ideal bass tone - and have you got it yet?
Good thread! The answer for me is yes, but there's more than one 'ideal tone' which makes it kind of more fun.. If I was in a band playing original music then I'd probably be searching for one sound but playing a wide variety of covers means that I need to be able to recreate lots of different tones. From a 60's Motown thump playing 'Valerie' through to a clanky rock sound when doing stuff like the Killers.. I doubt I get anywhere achieving all of them but it's great fun trying and keeps me interested.

Hi Folks, With apologies to Marcus who's currently selling a 700 RB II (the later version of this amp), I'm also putting my GK 700 RB up for sale, though it's the older model 700 and the asking price reflects that fact! Though I've used this amp very happily for the last year, I'm selling because I now need an amp that will work at 2ohms so that I can use my SWR Triad and SWR 210 at the same time (both of which are 4ohm cabs). So, a Peavey T-Max head is due to arrive imminently to allow me to do just that... Otherwise, I'd be keeping this GK700 because it's a great sounding, very versatile and very portable amp and it's been absolutely brilliant for gigging with! It has the usual GK features; simple to use e.q. including the pre-set for use with 5 string basses which is great, a contour control (which is kind of like the Trace Elliot mid-cut) and the 'boost' control which adds some grit and dirt to your sound a bit like a tube pre-amp does.. The tuner out function is very handy, as is the mute switch and the 10db cut facility at the input stage. And although I've never really used it, the amp has a bi-amp facility as well which allows you to run the very high frequencies seperately from the rest of the frequencies. When I got it from Ebay, the first thing I did was get it serviced and it was given a clean bill of health and a bit of a spring clean, so it's in perfect working order. Cosmetically it's a bit tatty as you can see in the photos but that doesn't affect the sound in any way. Just in case anyone asks, I'm not after any trades as I need to sell this to fund the T-Max and though I'm putting it up here, I'm aware that there's a lot of good stuff on the Forum for sale at the moment, so I'm also going to be listing this on Ebay too. But in an ideal world, I'd much rather sell to a fellow Basschat member if I can! I'm happy to ship it if necessary or collection is welcome, as is coming round to try it out! If you've any questions, please PM me or ask away here.. Thanks for looking, Nik

I wondered about that but then decided Charla was referring to the Leo Fender designed Musicman e.q., circa the mid '70s, when the Musicman Bass was launched.

The John East MM pre was installed the Sub5 that I brought from The Beedster. IIRC, that all happened after John East had a running dialogue in his Forum with people like OBBM and others here about the idea of a specific MM circuit, which inspired Beedster to get it fitted. He even then went on to modify the Sub5 to look like a natural 70's Ray, which he did brilliantly! Just to say that in my view, the East designed 'pre' emulated the original 2-band Musicman Stingray e.q. really well, and had the added bonus of a variable mid e.q. sweep which made for a really flexible circuit. In the end I sold the bass because I wanted a passive 5 in the end and one with 2 p/ups, but I rate the John East circuit very highly...
I really like the original 1976 US Spector SB1! That's really unusual. What's the pickup? Looks a bit like a chrome Model 1? And how does that sound?
+1 A great collection overall though! Have you got shares in the company??

Hey Cliff Do a search in the Effects forum for 'Zoom' and a lot of stuff comes up, like this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=696&hl=zoom I've had mine a year or more now and it's been very reliable, easy to use and it definitely helps my sound mainly through using the amp modeling presets. And as you say, it's such good value for money (picked it up for £45 here..).. Without having tried lots of others, it's not easy to say if it's the best out there, but it's definitely one of them! Nik

I actually prefer mine to the DJ5 I'd bought from P-T-P last year, though that's a great bass as well..
