1. Sorry for the lack of info over the last few days; it's been the 'week from hell' at work! Anyway, very brief update is that the SE Bash is going to be taking place here: HOLIDAY INN EGERTON ROAD GUILDFORD, GU2 7XZ ENGLAND on Saturday 27th September Probably going to go for 10am to 6pm. Other details such as which function room, masterclasses (hopefully??) costs, raffles etc, to be added over the next few weeks. I've started a new thread which is here: Just wanted to thank Merton especially for his help in pulling this together! Nik
 2. There's also this one; The Orpheus Centre founded by Richard Stilgoe: http://www.orpheus.org.uk/index.php?option...2&Itemid=34 and another one called Music for Youth: http://www.mfy.org.uk/ As well as.. http://www.youthmusic.org.uk/ And following on from Jakesbass mentioning the Musicians Benevolent Fund: http://www.mbf.org.uk/
 3.
Show me a bad sounding Neo bass cab...... there aren't any! In my experience Epifani and Bergantino are amongst the best sounding cabs and they are very light. I'm sure Dr Bass, EBS, Zoot, Genz Benz etc sound good too. Why on earth go heavy if light-weight sounds this good??
Price?
 4.
That is a Z series - they're Korean-made to MTD specs and as such should be inferior to bkman42's US made Killer B (with bart soapbars and I believe 3-band Bart eq). It has been on eBay for months - I don't think anyone is going to buy a $1200 bass secondhand for £700
That's true, the USA made Tobias Killer B should be a 'superior' bass to the MTD. But with the MTD range, Mike Tobias made a few design changes that I think make the MTDs seriously good basses for the money. Firstly, the string spacing on the MTDs is wider than the Tobias models (I think), at 19mm. Secondly, the Buzz Feinten tuning system is great. And thirdly, the asymmetrical neck profile (not sure if the Killer B has that?) makes the neck really comfortable and easy to play! Having said all that, the early Tobias basses are very, very good...
 5. There's a Mike Tobias Designs (MTD) 5 string up there at the moment that hasn' sold yet at £699 but the Tobias brand name is more well known than the MTDs, so you'd probably do better with yours.. I had a Tobias Classic 5 years ago and it was a fabulous bass so if that's anything to go by, the Killer B you have is probably a really nice bass! Good luck with it!
 6. Thanks for the replies folks.. Jase- it'd really be a shame not to have you there, what with the masterclass idea etc. But as you say, we'll never get dates that will work for everybody so I suppose we'll just have to have a cardboard cut out of you there instead... Matt; a social club is a great idea and I like the idea of having a bar there (just like at the main Bash in March) but how do we find a club around that area is the issue for me as I wouldn't know where to start - don't you have to be members to hire out the place? Is the one in Fleet anywhere near a train station and do you know if they'd be interested in such an idea? Mert, please ask Phil as that'd be great! Though without a set date it might be more tricky but offer up those 2 dates for starters and see what he says. Cheers for now Nik
 7.
Any news on this Nik please?
Hi Matt, Sorry for the delay.. here's the latest news: Venue: I'd decided that Backline in Guildford was the best place to go to from the point of view of location, cost and facilities. But, I've been told today that they are very, very likely to close completely in September for a re-furb. which means they are reluctant to take our booking because they are not 100% sure yet of their plans. And of course, if we book it and then 2 weeks beforehand they decide to close, we'd be up the creek without a paddle! So I am now waiting on Water Rats Studios, Woking to get back to me to confirm their availability (http://www.waterrat.co.uk/?gclid=CNPH3PKpiJQCFRU7EAodCmsEVw) Dates: What I'd asked for was either: Sunday 21st September or Saturday 27th September with my preference being the 21st September. To explain my thinking on this briefly; because of people's holidays seeming to be at the end of August and the beginning of September, I thought it would provide a much better opportunity for everybody to make it if the date was near the end of September. I hope that's OK with everyone? As I say, I'm waiting to hear back from them soon with confirmation. There is good parking facilities but it's a 10 minute walk from the station. But, between us, I would have thought we could overcome that issue though.. Format: I'm thinking of booking two rooms; Room 1: to be used for the main gathering, as per normal Room 2: a seperate room to have either masterclasses, set-ups, workshops etc. I've discussed this Room 2 idea with Ped & OBBM and they seem to think it could work really well, as do I! And, if people are up for the idea of masterclasses, then I'd like to ask everyone now if they have any mates/contacts who are so called 'name players' to see if they'd be interested in participating? We already have a name or two in the offing but more on that later.. Donations: I suggested to Ped that any profits from this go to either: (i) the charity I work for, which is called 'Enable Me' (www.enableme.org.uk, which works with disabled people in schools). (ii) a music related charity (iii) Basschat.co.uk Feedback I've had so far is that perhaps profits could be split between Basschat and Enable Me but to be honest, I'm open to suggestions on this. One thing I do feel strongly about though is making sure that any charitable donations go to smaller, less well-known charities this time around. That's because, working in the voluntary community sector as I do, it's well-known that all the big players like Mencap, Age Concern, Macmillan, Guide Dogs for the Blind etc, etc, are all sitting on millions of pounds in reserves whilst the smaller local charities are finding it increasingly hard to get funding. That's because money always makes money, so all those big TV advertising campaigns you see (worthy as they all are), suck up all the charitable giving that's out there, or most of it anyway maning there's even less that trickles down to the bottom! Sorry - I'll get off my soap-box now. OK, that's it for now.. If I have once concern at the moment, it's that the size of the biggest room at Water Rats is a tad too small, otherwise, I think it's all coming together, albeit slowly. Apologies to all for such a long post but I wanted to bring everyone up to speed and invite feedback on what's being suggested. Cheers Nik
 8.
I declare war at sundown for the amp!
Will this be some kind of wierd 'bass-off' like that scene in Zoolander, only you have to do ridiculously complicated basslines to become the winner
 9. Sorry, can't help I'm afraid as that is a beautiful looking bass! Best phone your GP on Monday morning....Or give your credit cards to your wife for safe keeping!
 10.

+1
 11.
Hey Nik - get an EBS Microbass II Sorry as well
Cheers John I've heard they're expensive but great and I don't know a thing about them.. Will have a look now though.. Thanks! Nik
 12.
How many basses can you play at one time?
Just saw this! Simple answe is one, but not very well more often than not. The reason I'm interested in an amp with 2 channels is because during gigs I use my Roscoe Beck V which I'm sure you know, has a very low output. But on certain songs, I use my Wal Pro, which has a very high output. So an ideal situation for me would be having 2 channels set up completely seperately; one for each bass in order to save any hassle when switching over during the set. My old Peavey Mk IV amp had that and thought it wasn't the best amp in the world, it was bloody handy when using more than one bass. Sorry for hijacking the OP by the way...
 13.
I'll answer this cos I used to have one, you can only play one bass through it. There's the solid state preamp, tube preamp, and then you can select both at the same time. I liked both when I had mine
Thanks.; that's what I thought...
 14.
.... or blend valve & solid state together... The crossover option is quite cool too & it goes down to 2 Ohms Here's a link to the manual... T-Max Manual Reckon it's the best amp Peavey have made!..... if I could afford to, I'd keep it!
Thanks for the info! The way it seems to me having looked at the manual, you can only use one bass with it at any one time.. But that one bass signal can be sent through two different channels for really quick changes of sound and by combining the channels, you also get a 3rd sound.. What it doesn't seem to be is an amp that can have two different basses plugged in at any one time - is that right?
 15. I've always been interested in one of these because of the 2 channel facility and the fact that it can drive two 4 ohm cabs - is that right or am I thinking of another Peavey model? How does the 2-channel facility work exactly?
 16. I recently bought a Triad from Lee-Man and they're great sounding cabs! It cost me about £40 to ship via APC but it was worth it.. Good luck with the sale!
 17. Lovely stuff Pete! That 5 string looks great but it must be very narrow string spacing? I've just recently joined the Aria club with a mid 80's fretless ProII RSB special that I bought from Pete Young here on the forum.. I'll put a picture up at some point soon..
 18.
Here's my old Maya. She's in immaculate condition, not a scratch or ding. Using it a lot more at the moment. Even been complimented by a couple Rickenbacker owners after trying it. Punchy! I've added a screw cap for a thumb rest by bridge pickup, has a phase switch which puts both pickups in & out of humbucking mode when together & I've done bridge pickup cap bypass mod with push-pull tone pot.
That looks really good and the mods you've done are very interesting! Do they change the sound a lot?
 19.
Once I got the Celinder P bass I knew I had to have a jazz and I got one and then let it go so there's now another one arrived and this is a very special bass. The tone is absolutely wonderful and its super playeable. I hesitate to say this but I can't see this going anywhere for a long time. Only drawback is it's not light at 10.25 lbs but what a bass!!!
That's a lovely looking bass! Nothing wrong with heavy basses in my opinion.. Two of mine are similarly heavy (my Wal & Fender RBV) but they sound great..
 20.
In my experience and assuming everything else is equal (ie. string break angle over the saddles) it makes a difference only so far as the bridge contributes overall to the general rigidity of the instrument. In plain english that means the following points: 1) The string vibrates from the saddle, not from the anchor and the saddles are in contact with the base plate. So most of the vibrations essentially get transmitted to the body primarily through the base plate. A high mass bridge (like a badass) is less likely to vibrate in sympathy with the the strings and therefore less likely to transmit vibrations through to the body but will help with sustain. 2) The through body anchoring may make a difference if the bridge lacks sufficient rigidity as an anchor. Basically this would mean that if the bridge was flimsy enough to dampen the sustain AND the wood selected and neck design was insufficiently rigid then through body anchoring could probably have some slight benefit. 3) With a high mass bridge, the wood makes less of a contribution to the tonal character and sustain of the bass. With a low mass (eg. vintage Fender) bridge the wood is likely to make more of a contribution. So in basses with low mass bridges its more important that the wood is well seasoned and rigid if sustain is desirable. To sum up, I'd suggest the role of the bridge is relative depending on how the rest of the bass has been designed. I've owned stingrays with both options and there was little difference in tonal character.
+1 I though that the diference was more apparent in the way the bass sustains, as opposed to a change in tonal characteristics..
 21.
Playing around with Garage Band on the Mac and recorded a bit of reggae bassplaying on my Yamaha BB614. DI'd it straight into the computer and then added the "reggae bass" FX setting with a bit of reverb. Really pleased with the sound, even if there are a couple of fluffs with the playing. Sounds great for a bass that cost £280 new. See what you think:
I enjoyed that! Sounds great as you say.. Hoping to see you at Loxwood on Saturday - will you be playing the BB614 or the G&L?
 22. I'm interested in the Alesis John. Any idea on postage costs to West Sussex?
 23.
I'll start - this is the original Rickenbugger, queen of all the Fakers: It's a Kasuga, made in Japan probably early/mid 70s, exact model & age uncertain. It's a bolt-neck, and is incredibly heavy - which I haven't helped by putting a brass Hipshot on it. Additionally I've made a custom trc (the original was sadly long-gone) and Pickguardian - style pickup surround, and replaced the plain white scratchplate with the pearl. It may be a cheap Jap copy - but I think it's the most gorgeous & unique Rick-shaped thing I've yet to lay eyes on... Who's next? Jon.
That's gorgeous! Never heard of that make before... Well, here's my £82.00 Hondo II Ricky copy, bought from Kays catalogues in 1977! Couple of mods; new tuners, nut etc but it's still basically the same cheap old plywood Hondo! TBH, it doesn't play well and it doesn't sound great either but it's been with me for 31 years and it'll probably still be here in another 30! I did all my first gigs as a musician with this bass in all the Punk venues across london, venues like the Marquee in Wardour St, the Rock Garden, The Hope & Anchor etc, etc. So it's just got too much sentimental value to ever part with.. 24.
Brian Wilson.
Good call! To that I would add Barry Adamson (Magazine), Dennis Dunnaway (Alice Cooper) and although Bilbo is being a bit duplicitous when he says 'who?', Paul McCartney definitely fits the bill for this thread ! Who's Miroslav Vitous anyway, when he's at home
 25.
To be honest Nik it is probably best for you to choose a date that suits you and nail it down. As time goes on, peoples availability changes making a vote pointless. If you book it they will come! Looking forward to seeing you all again ped
Hi Ped That's probably true enough... So what I'm doing is having a chat with a couple of people here about it and will come up with a cunning plan by the end of the week! Will send you a PM! Cheers Nik
