1.
Let it be known that Ian (SMART) is a very bad chap. Last Friday, as if he could read my mind, he emailed me a few pics. A couple of days later I was close to a month's salary less well off but one Modulus Flea to the good. I'd missed my old one terribly, despite being a bit of a solid and low down Precision sort at heart, the Flea kind of expresses the other & darker side of my character, the one that wants his bass to kick the sh*t out of guitarists, drummers and vocalists and show no mercy doing so I've been playing over 20 years and this is the only bass I've ever bought new. And it was worth every penny. Also, I can't tell you how impressed I was by Ian Morton who drove a few hundred miles to deliver it in person. A top bloke. Cheers Ian.
How you can justify a complete U-turn in bass-buying behaviour with a few charming turns of phrase, an easy going, likeable personality and a digital camera at your disposal is beyond me Chris! For us followers and supporters of your 'adventures-in-70s mojo' crusade, this is tantamount to heresy. I for one have lost all respect for you now and will have to drive to MK immediately to relieve you of your collection of P basses as punishment.... Lovely bass by the way!
 2. Great to see such positive stuff for Basschat members! I bought the magazine today and thought the Luke and Homer articles were really good! I especially enjoyed Homer's after gig tips Now I know Kaiu is a member too, I'll go back and read that article later.. Well done chaps and also to Matt & Mike @ BGM for giving people here such great support!
 3.
Well done! Good positive post, here! Gents take your cue from Kubickiboy!
+1
 4.
Neither am I - I have no idea what he means by that. Did someone disagree with him about something?
I think you'll find it all goes back to this:
Overrated by who? Without wishing to descend into an argument, does the wider world care what the posters on this thread think? Jaco, Jamerson, Mark King and the rest have made music that has entertained and been enjoyed by people all round the world. Have you?
To which I replied:
That's not the point, with respect.. The original post - by a member of Basschat, asked fellow Basschat members - who we thought were overrated. Therefore, it's a question about our opinions here, not about the achievements of the bassists in question out there in the 'wider world'.. So IMHO, it's just a harmless way to pass the time and definitely not a way to start arguements..
A perfectly reasonable answer I feel.. But, I think that matty589's toys have been steadily thrown out of the pram ever since... He's quick to dish it out and tell us all what to do and how to do it and that we're all useless twats etc, etc, but actually when it comes down to it, he can't take someone disagreeing with him or having a different point of view at all. As dlloyd said:
You're not really cut out for this discussion forum business, are you?
I'm not normally a confrontational or rude person but every now and again, there's times when it's best to be blunt.. So, matty589, why don't you pick all your toys up, put them back in your pram and p*ss off! Just my opinion of course
 5.
This is the irst time in my 25 years of playing that i am going to have 4 good basses at one time, but thinking what am i gonna do with them when i know my new status is going to be he one! If you guys have a fav that you use all the time, what do you do with the others??
Enjoy them for their different qualities when the mood takes you.. Variety is the spice of life, etc, etc...
 6.
The distinction between 'bassists' and 'musicians' is an interesting one. Whilst it is true really that the one is the other -- if you play bass, then you're playing music, ergo... -- there is also the aspect mentioned by bnt regarding Geddy Lee, i.e. his ability in other aspects. His keyboard skills, singing, composition, etc. This it could be said makes him an excellent bassist but an extraordinary musician, although as we've said the one is the other and at this point the argument does an Oozelum Bird and goes round in circles before disappearing up its own arse. The point many people have made about Mark King is a good one, while he inspired thousands of players to pick up the bass in the 80s (myself and I think CK included), when you take a good look at his playing he's something of a one trick pony. HOWEVER... what a lot of people seem to forget is that he sings while he does it... have you ever tried singing a counter melody over the top of a complicated bassline? Exactly. Added to which, he is a drummer of no little ability and also plays guitar and keys -- exhibit A, his first solo album Influences -- and writes a bloody good tune. The vast majority of L42's back catalogue has the name 'King' as either the whole or part credit. So, overrated as a bassist perhaps, but as an all round musician? well I wish I could do all that lot. Sorry, I've drifted about a nautical mile from the OP here, but it's something that I've been thinking about.
That's all true Rich and makes a good point about bassists who play and sing.. It is definitely a real skill or art, and to play technically difficult parts like Mark King does and sing the lead vocal at the same time, that's pretty amazing! I thought the same of Geddy Lee when I saw Rush last year.. And even though I think Mr Level 42 is over-rated as a bassist, I don't for one second deny what an influence he has been to loads of bass players.. But as an 'under-rated' Basschat bassist, if I was to aspire to be as good at writing songs that I could then play & sing at the same time, I'd want to emulate Macca, Sting or Prince for example way, way before I ever thought of trying to emulate Mark King. And that's because their music and bass playing means more to me and inspires me more than Level 42 or Jaco etc, etc..
Count me in, Nik! Also - I hate Jaco -- same as Mark Level 42 whatever-the-hell-his name-is....too technical, no soul whatsoever - aliens. Nobody here could ever remember a tasty lick he ever played. Reminds me of the idiots at music stores that turn the volume high and play as fast as they can with nothing in mind except hay between their ears.
Cheers Mike - always knew we 'rats' were on the same wavelength! Does that make us Wal-Rats then?
 7.
Something to do with pots & kettles here, friend. I wasn't going to get drawn into this (basically a discussion where the word "overrated" has become confused with "I don't like..." ) but in one choice little phrase you have just urinated all over the effort, commitment, achievements & aspirations of every single member here. I can really only speak for myself - but music - playing it, composing it, performing it, recording it - constitutes a dominant part of what makes me want to get up each morning. I don't expect, anticipate, seek or wish for the sort of commercial success & popular acceptance that you appear to think validates a musician's existence - creating or playing music which is of value to me is its own reward. Any musician who doesn't grasp this would be better off doing something else. Jon.
+1 Obviously, we are all 'under-rated' here on Basschat!
For the most part, I prefer music where I'm aware of the song first and foremost and forget about listening to the musicians.
+1 again...
 8.
Nik brought my SWR Triad, really easy transaction, no messing around. Nice bloke. Hope you like the cab mate. Lee
Thanks Lee - for a great cab and the feedback! Not used it in anger yet but it's sounding pretty good here at home, especially with my Wal Gigging loads from next month, so it'll get plenty of use.. Cheers Nik
 9.
So, I've just been watching TOTP2 and it was on the 80's and whilst it was really a 'kinda goin' nowhere new' decade musically (with the exception of Hip-hop) it did spawn some freaky hardware..... So come on B-chatters, what is your most freaky decade for basses and why? Me...? Bootsy... need I say more?
My first thought was the 70's too... But if you look at BigRedX's 'Weird & Wonderful Basses' thread, seems like there's loads of freaky basses around now??
 10. Glad to hear you got through it all with your sanity intact..Typical bloody drummer, drinker or both!! Just goes to show that no matter how you prepare for these situations, people always go and do the unexpected and everyone has to adapt and make the best of it, which obviously, you've done... Enjoy the mixing session - that's fun!
 11.
I know this place is about debate but I don't see the point of these threads TBH. One man's Mingus is another man's Adam Clayton and vice versa. I've seen these threads rapidly degenerate into a slanging match and end up fueling disagreements between previously friendly members. Just my opinion ( ) of course.
You were right!
 12.
The original query asks who 'you' think is over-rated... surely if you list a bassist that you don't like, that then means that they can't be over-rated. You don't rate them at all, hence they can not by definition be over-rated by you
Not at all.. If for example, I don't like a particular bassist such as Mark King, that doesn't preclude that fact that lots of other people do 'rate' Mr King. Therefore IMHO, he is 'over-rated (overrated, overratted etc, etc whatever...) because too many other people 'rate' him, when I don't. Simple really, but then you knew that already, didn't you?
 13.
I don't think you're a rat at all, and I certainly wouldn't overrat you
Some of my best friends are rats
 14.
Well I'm glad you have aired your opinion. I bet we all feel well informed and have learnt something new today. One thing I have to concede: when it comes to talking bollocks, I couldn't possibly keep pace with you
Surely, you're not overratting me are you?
 15.
If you read the question, then your reply misses the point. Who is rating the player in the first place? It can't be you otherwise how can you rate them and then say they are overrated? Logically we are being asked who WE think is overrated by THE WIDER WORLD. If the wider world have rated them to any significant degree then what is said here is, quite literally, a way to waste time. An opinion is only worth having if it is backed up with knowledge, experience and some kind of supporting evidence. Saying "I think Jaco is overrated" is like saying "I think blue is not golf". Meaningless. By the way, which washer-dryers are, in your opinion, overrated?
Egad's - this is a bit much for a Sunday morning! ...looks for Edward De Bono's 'I am Right, You are Wrong' first edition before sitting down to compose a sensible reply.. You're talking complete bollocks, sir! In your post you said: "Overrated by who? Without wishing to descend into an argument, does the wider world care what the posters on this thread think?" Obviously, the wider world doesn't care what we think because that's not the point of this thread. But the person who posted this topic, Josh, does care what we think. And it's to Josh and other Basschat members that our opinions are addressed.. Saying "I think Jaco is overrated" is a completely consistent, logical statement in the context in which it is being expressed here in this thread.... Especially as he is
 16.
Exactly man, this is purely on the basis of opinions and not fact and in no way did I intend for this thread to be one littered with the perpetual arguing which is now becoming all the rage. As I said I'm just interested to see what we all think. From the posts thus far, I get the impression that as bass players we give bassist's/or any muscians a great amount of respect, even if the player does not hit your eruption button. As opposed to the thread on the Pearl's drummer forum, which was more people all bashing the legends (Bonham, Moon, Baker and even Peart etc...) to aggrivate more than to state an opinion. Occasionally a sensible mind would write a post accepting all the opinions and admitting respect to them, and would thus be open to more flamming. Even for the few I think are "Over-rated" I respect greatly, Flea drives me up the sodding wall along with his army of Slap-a-likes, but he has built himself a great career, influenced countless bassists over the years and is still going strong, all you really can do is respect that As long as our opinions have an ounce of respect the less chance there is someone will take it the wrong way.
+1
 17.
Overrated by who? Without wishing to descend into an argument, does the wider world care what the posters on this thread think? 18. Mark King, Level 42 Though unbelievably dextrous, in my opinion, his playing and music is souless, funkless, 80s shiny blue-eyed pop.. More a technician than musician Loads better than I could ever be, but highly overrated..
 19. 100% agree! It's common courtesy..
 20.
Tomorrow's the big day. The main man is going in at 11am to lay down guide guitars & vocals. Me & drummer are going in for 4pm to hopefully record the drums & bass together. I'm pretty sure I'll be overdubbing or punching in corrections after any main takes. Guitarist is going in on Sunday to do his stuff. The real vocals & harmonies, keyboards & percussion will all be done on Monday and he's going to mix it all on Tuesday. We've been rehearsing pretty solid and are all quite excited. Looking forward to it. Thanks again all, for your advice & comments, Mark
Good luck with it all Mark and make sure you enjoy yourself in the process!
 21.
i suppose for the next song she requested "I want to break free" lucky git an all
22.
In the band i am in the guitarist always tries to tell me how to play a basssline (i have only been playing for 25 years) which tends to do my head in as i do not tell him how to play things on his guitar. Is it because they follow the myth that a bass player is someone who wants to play a guitar but is not good enough which of course is a load of bo####s any views or am i being over sensitive
I always get wound up when any of the other band members notice and point out my mistakes!! Because I never ever point out theirs...

Nik, I've just brought one of these for my other Triad http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRAND-NEW-Genuine-SW...1713.m153.l1262 They did have some spare plastic corners in the other day. Lee
Thanks for the link Lee; I've noticed the plastic corners already so might do a double order!
 24. Just bought Lee's SWR Triad and it's brilliant! As described, perfectly packaged and Lee's a really easy person to deal with! He knows his stuff too and that always turns what is a bit of business into a real pleasure. Thanks mate! Nik
