http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mpd7r0PdVnU
That was really interesting, thanks... Though the Lakland does a good all-round job - which is no mean feat in itself - to my ears, it lacked a little something.. I guess you just can't beat the tone of those original 3 basses?

How about: I really can't believe that (Sid Viscious) didn't get any votes. His work on (Adventures in Punk/Jazz fusion) was way better than anything (Messrs Jaco Wooten Flowres) ever did. This is why I hate Q magazine...
 3.
So long as they're not slapping for 3 hours and getting on everyone's tits, that is.
+100
 4.
Nice of you to say so. It sounded great being played by everyone else - that is such a rare thing to experience, usually it's kids having a go through my practice amp kiwi and 'Nik, yes I came away having forgotten to try about 20 of the basses I intended to... next time I'll just get on with it
It's always great hearing other people play your own bass.. I really enjoyed hearing Hans, Jimbo and others play my Roscoe Beck 5.. As you say, there were so many nice basses, but with the limited time available, I got more into trying out some of the very nice rigs that were there on the day. Must do better next time!!
 5.
Oh crap I completely forgot to check out your 5 string P, Si.
Me too
 6.
I've never understood why people feel the need to ram their musical opinions down other peoples throats and then trash everything else ad nauseum. It's a waste of time. Nor do I understand why people feel the need to talk in derisory terms about old people and their musical tastes (not just in this thread bilbo but it goes on a lot these days on this forum). I'd just like to say to those people, the ones who rubbish Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Elvis etc etc, if you're lucky, you'll all be old one day and you'll probably grow old listening to the music you listen to now and then you'll have to suffer the jibes and ill-informed comments of all those little oiks who think they know better. It's a shame to have to wait so long to realise you're opinion is no more valid than anybody elses. OK - I'll shut up now and eat my lard sandwiches.
+1 It's difficult for anyone to assess the impact of an artist 10, 20 or even 50 years later, but when Elvis arrived out of nowhere in the mid 50's, he had the single biggest impact on popular culture in general and on other musicians than anyone else has had -before or since. The fact that we're still talking about him now is testament to that.. Personally, I've always been a fan of his voice but each to their own I suppose. For those that want to know how good he was, check out his album of gospel songs... Sublime! Anyway, it sounds like a great project to do Homer! Enjoy it - especially as it's the perfect musical setting for your P bass.....
 7.
George Murray did low, then next was Carmine Rojas who now gigs with Joe Bonnamassa. Bowie and Visconti did bass bits from time to time in the studio as well. But to be fair nik...Mike Garson cropped up thru the spiders sessions, before the spiders and all the way up to date in bowies career.
Very true Nig.. And he's still in Bowie's band to this day which is quite an achievement! As for George Murray, I loved his playing, but there seems to be very little info about him anywhere these days.. Hope all's well with you Nig!!
 8. I had the pleasure of playing this bass at last year's South East Bash and it's fabulous!! Looks amazing too. Good luck with the sale...
 9.
No. The Tuesday night 30 minute show is IN ADDITION to the Friday night full length one. Isn't it?
Yep, sorry! You are 100% spot on.. I checked the BBC listings and each Friday night the show is broadcast again but as an extended version.. So we get more performances by each artist, which is brilliant!
 10.
The drummer and singer in the Only Ones looked like they'd been spending a few years dead for tax reasons during their time off from the band ...
They were a bit disapointing I thought mainly because Peter Perret seemed completely unable to sing or perform with any consistency, looking particularly wasted in the process! There's a bit about how his 'addictions' have derailed his career in the Only Ones Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Only_Ones Shame because they were a great band... AFAIK, this new time slot for Later is how it's going it be from now on and that's a real loss because it's only a half hour show!
 11.
Two gigs in my neck of the woods this weekend............Will try to get along to one or t'other.
Be good to see you if you can...and please come and say hello and have a drink if you do!
 12.
I've always liked the basslines on all Bowie stuff. Great melodies and hooks. On some of his stuff the bass is almost the lead instrument. Have a listen to Absolute Beginners for a great bassline. I thought Trevor Bolder played on Bowie stuff of that era, but I could be wrong. Edit. Ok, just read the Wiki page. Probably Herbie Flowers then
+1 There are definitely some great basslines on Bowie songs that drive the whole song, such as: Fame TVC15 Sound & Vision A New Career in A New Town Ashes To Ashes The Jean Genie Rebel Rebel is on the Diamond Dogs album and it was Bowie's first album for some years that didn't feature any of 'The Spiders From Mars', i.e Mick Ronson (Guitar), Trevor Bolder (Bass) and Mick 'Woody' Woodmansy (Drums).. It was another of Bowie's 'concept albums' and the song '1984' gave a real clue as to where he was going musically with it's very heavily Disco and Soul influenced style that culminated in his Young Americans & Station to Station albums.
 13.
Relax but don't relax so much that you end up having a chat every five minutes about everything. Keep an eye on the time and keep a momentum about the session so you're aware of what you've still got to do. Allow *loads* of time to do the vocal track. It's the single most important bit you'll do but can be the rushed thing at the end.
+1 about the vocals! Gotta say that there's some fantastic advice posted here that applies to everyone in the band.. If you can, try and share it with your band members too so they know how you're thinking and how you would like everyone to approach the recording session...
 14. Great news! The best advice I could offer for when you're recording is to try to overcome any nerves you have, relax and enjoy it!! The time in there goes so fast it's unbelievable, so make the best you can of the day. When it's not time to do your bit or you've finished making your contribution, always try to listen and learn from what the other people around you are doing, especially the engineer and/or producer. It's a fascinating environment - very different from rehearsing or gigging - and has it's own rhythm.. Things can be slow at times, but it should always be a chance to learn.. Hope it goes well for you!
 15. Hi Folks, Dr. Dave very kindly sent me some Strat-like control knobs for my Roscoe Beck V totally free of charge! I offered him some of my hard-earned in exchange, but he wouldn't have it... So, Dave - I owe you a fair few pints when we finally get to meet!! Just wanted to share this example with you of what the 'basschat community' is all about and give a big thumbs up for the Dr! Cheers Nik
 16.
Shocker.... honestly i don't think he was the best. I also don't believe there is a 'best'. Stuff like this is really subjective and really you need to stay withing one genre to name a 'best' for instance john paul jones and jaco are two entirely different players. But yeah, predictable...
I'm not a Jaco fan at all, have none of his music in my house except for one or two YouTube links on this PC, but I think it's really cool that the Poll has been 'won' by a real musician. Someone who worked outside of the mainstream but who has had a huge impact on the mainstream.. I love loads of the other players listed too, but this is a good outcome for 'music' and 'musicians' IMHO... Big thanks to Born 2B Mild for an entertaining thread!
 17.
I've owned higher end and more versatile but biggest bond is with my G&L SB-2 with birdseye maple /ebony neck. If they all went I'd keep this its pure plug in and play
Not surprised... That's a real 'looker'!
 18.
Nice to meet you Nik Put the vid up on Youtube .. It's easy.
Likewise! Seems like WalMan and you agree, so YouTube it will be..
 19. Hi Folks Long overdue this, but I bought Martin's Axl fretless last month.. Still can't play fretless for toffee, but am happy to say that Martin is a pleasure to deal with, very helpful and a man of his word!! Sounds like he's a very knowledgable musician too.. Very happy to recommend him to all fellow Basschatters... Cheers Nik
 20.
I'll second that: Chris is genuine, friendly and honest. Knows his stuff, has his sh1t together and tells a good story.
+3 Happy to ' third ' that (best not said whilst inebriated...) Just bought some more Beedster kit and as ever, Chris is a pleasure to deal with. Can't work out how to use it, but that's another story Thanks mate - hope to see you soon! Nik
 21.
Doesn't seem to have a thread, so here we go! Quick payment, and no issues whatsoever.
Happened to meet Bob at the Bash in Northampton. He's helped me out loads with advice recently so just wanted to say thanks for that Bob and it was good to meet you yesterday! Absolutely top chap IMHO... Nik
 22.
My Status Retroactive J. Yummy yummy. Sounded bloody good yesterday thru Luke's rig
Good point Merton .. Your Status acquitted itself very nicely yesterday, sounding damm good in the process! The Bash yesterday really was a great chance for all of us there to test our basses out amongst so many others.. Like you, I'm really happy with mine; the Roscoe Beck 5, Wal Pro2e, BC Rich Eagle and Fender Jazz 5 and sounded good to my ears when put through different rigs, so that was a positive result.. Can't say I didn't come away GASsing for a new rig though!
 23.
What a great day and a teriffic bash, well done to Ped and all the mods for putting it on. It was great to see you all again, thanks to Woodenshirt for laying on the free sandwiches as well. GAS has set in again now Oh dear !
+1 Well done guys and thanks Woodenshirt for the snacks, our lunch, our dinner on the way home and my breakfast this morning!!! Not sure I could ever eat a sandwich again but your generosity was nothing short of amazing!! Overall, I had a great day and a real good laugh travelling there and back with WalMan and Merton and thanks Al for doing all the driving! Your navigator on the other hand needs her circuits re-testing... Still, we only got lost 3 times, so that's good I'd say for mere 'bassists'! It was great to meet everyone, catch up with friends made at last year's SE Bass Bash and make some new friends and as much as the basses and the gear is important, I also think the 'basschat community' bit counts for a lot. Meeting The Burpster, Owen and Alex who've helped me out recently with advice and bits of hard to find kit, was just brilliant! Good to see the Beedster there too, albeit very briefly. And of course, there were some seriously GAS-inducing gear around.. Highlights for me were: Jimbo's Sadowsky + Mesa Boogie 400 head Loweringthetone's Wal-a-like and Ibanez Musican 8 string (great fun ) Birdy's Bergantino Rig Merton's Status Groove 5 Luke's Warwick Streamer 5 (again..) Rich's Suker I just wish I'd had time to try out more stuff and talk to more people.. Here's a few pics I took on the camcorder - not such great quality - but hopefully they caught the mood a little... Colin's vintage gear for sale outside... Merton playing Jimbo's Sadowsky By the way, I've got some video footage to upload but never done it before, so if anyone can tell me how to do that please, I'll try and load it up tonight? Looking forward to the next one and an SE Bash in autumn! Cheers Nik
