1.
Cheers Nik. It was fun. Different with the twin guitars too. They didn't do too bad having worked them out on speakerphone last week Its funny how Tubes fans always seem to come out of the woodwork when we do 'White Punks..'. Have to say I do love the sound of the G&L myself (and ain't she pretty  ). It just sits in there beautifully. So on to Chichester tonight & hopefully I won't cramp up towards the end like I did last night. Have a good one in Shoreham
Cheers Al - hope The Fountain goes well too.. Bassninja - we should hook up sometime as you're pretty near Littlehampton..
 2. Good gig last night Al! I was a bit knackered at the end of it, and that was only from watching you guys.. I bet you were completely shattered this morning!! The G&L was brilliant and some very nice playing too... I was meant to go onto Brighton after yours to see mr russ's gig, but 2 pints of GreenKing put paid to that unfortunately (sorry Russ!!).. Cheers Nik
 3.
Was it Mae West who said Are you in showbusiness? Then get the hell off my stage
Here's a picture of WalMan carrying out said order... Great gig Al; the G&L sounding sweet and 'White Punks..' is just brilliant!
 4.
Hey, no worries. I'm sure no offence was intended. A little update: I spoke to Bernie Goodfellow today and he confirmed that it is a Lowden. Still a great quality bass though, from what I can tell. I'd never spoken with him before, but he seems like an incredibly nice bloke and didn't seem to mind me bothering him at all. All of this has gotten me thinking that I really would like one of those GB's now..... lol!!!
Bernie's a really good bloke and that's typical of him to give you his time like that...
 5.
Yeah - I always liked his playing.... Here's what he's up to now: http://www.myspace.com/stevenseverinmusic I remember back in the day we were rehearsing at NOMIS (I think that's closed down now?) - & The Banshees were there as well - bumped into Severin in the toilet of all places - he was about 4ft tall. Yet another famous short arse! Yes - I think he played a WAL quite often - with aluminium plectrums! But for me the most talented musician from that era was Budgie - what a drummer.
+1 Budgie is a great drummer.. And I've always been a Banshees fan. Funny you say that about NOMIS - it was that kind of place! I bumped into Francis Rossi from Quo in there once..
 6.
Took matters into my own hands and dismantled enough to get to the crossover. Had a lamp in there acting as a limiter, this had blown and the driver was overloading. Rang Turbosound and they're sending a couple of replacements FOC. At least if it happens at gig levels we've now got a replacement driver handy too.
Very impressive! That's much more technical prowess than I could ever muster Nick! Hope all's well otherwise....
 7.
phew! for a minute there i thought you'd rediscovered my long lost Goodfellow serial no: 001 - damn i wish i hadn't got rid of that bass!!! anyways sounds like you got a good un - bring on the pics! peace c
I saw your bass in a pawn shop in Islington (by the tube station) in 1993 - a brilliant bass! I was looking for my Wal Pro2e that had just been stolen so I was looking in all sorts of places for it. And that Goodfellow - 001 - was for sale.. I should have bought it but I was so obsessed with finding my Wal it didn't even cross my mind.. What a fool!!
 8.
The music industry is constantly changing.Prior to the mid sixties the money was in song writing ,publishing sheet music and selling on copyrights to other bands. For example Bob Dylan was originally given a contract because his recording company wanted to recycle his songs to other acts on the same label like Peter Paul and Mary . The Beatles, originally a covers band , lead the way by later writing much of their own material. After Sgt Pepper bands increasingly headed for the studio to make more complex music. Initially the new multi tracked music was rarely reproduced faithfully live,if it was played live at all.So we arrive at Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield and the era of studio recording domination. Many of the established Supergroups only played 'live' to promote a new album. The music industry has had a fantastic run, especially with the rip - off prices of CD's in the UK and the massive back cataloging of albums that took place after CDs. I originally bought a double album - Space Ritual - Hawkwind (1973) on vinyl, then on 8 track, then on vinyl again (scratched), then on CDs. Now I've got it on my computer , ipod , DAB radio with SD card. Will I ever buy another copy ? No.Never. Income from recording will go direct to bands from legal downloading on initial publication.CDs will continue to be pressed and continue to decline in sales.Live performances will , once again , provide big name groups with significant income.I was offered £1,500 in readies for my £75 Cream R.A.H. ticket in 2005. All of a sudden Led Zep reform, not a coincidence. Smaller bands are playing live , running their own web sites, marketing mechandise ,podcasting , recording and mixing their own original and excellent music in home studios and selling CDs- a good example is The Pineapple Thief from Yeovil - check the site out. http://www.pineapplethief.com/
+1 Very well put indeed... I remember the Pineapple Thief from 6 or 7 years ago and they were good then.. I saw them a couple of times; once in Yeovil and once in London I think.. Very pleased to learn that they're still doing it and believing in what they have to offer. Great thing is that now they can reach people via their own means
 9. The black one with the maple board does it for me!! What a stunning collection...
 10.
lovely!
+1 Nice flooring too Chris!! Seriously though, that's quite a collection and must have taken a lot of time & effort to bring it together.. Hope all's well with you?
 11.
Here's a couple of quick snaps. Needs a good polish and some touch up paint, but I think it'll polish up okay. Electrics all working well and sounding good - sounds not unlike to my Wal to be honest, and a similar feel too. If anyone can cast any light as to age/model/value, I'd be very grateful!
I think it's a Goodfellow Bass made by Lowden Guitars in Northern Ireland in the mid 90s; see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avalon_Guitars As I understand it, Bernie Goodfellow lost control of the Goodfellow name in the late 80s or early 90s and so he started Nightingale Basses in Denmark Street, London for a while before he finally set up GB Guitars in Brighton which is where he is now. Lowden bought/owned the Goodfellow Bass name and the actual body design was very much like an early Goodfellow bass. I had one of these for a while in 1995 which cost me about £700 at the time, and it had a mahogony core like a Wal Custom (hence the tonal similarity you mention) and Kent Armstrong pick ups I think. It was a very nice bass but not quite in the class of an early handmade Bernie Goodfellow 'Goodfellow Bass' (if that makes sense).. So, although it's not one of Bernie's originals, you've definitely got a bargain and these are quite rare basses, so congratulations on your good fortune!
 12.
Hi All, Ive just been sat here in awe of this guy - great execution, great tone, great playing, great tune and it just gets better as you listen. This guy is mental, I only wish my playing came close to this as he tears a fantastic Ben Harper track up with his skills. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bX9C96zwYfQ...ted&search= enjoy!
Thanks Luke! Just goes to show that 'tone' is all in the hands...
 13.
Of all those, I like the first one best.
Yep - me too! But there's some other very nice basses in that collection too.. The Wal and the Tokai particularly.. So which ones do you still have then?
 14. 17.
Hello I'm doing a piece of coursework on the music industry, and for some research I thought I'd see what you guys thought. A good mix of pro and amatur musicians, all with some knowledge of the music world. So, what do you think is in the future for the music industry? What will happen to record companies with falling slaes thanks to illegal download? What will happen to live music with so many bands around? Will we all go underground, DIY, or sell our souls for fame? Please write as much or as little as you want/can be assed, every opinion helps! Thanks!
Being flippant, I'd say 'what future?', as I don't think there is a future for the music INDUSTRY (to quote Rich).. In my view, the entertainment media/industry (including portals like BBC, AOL, Yahoo, myspace, youtube etc, etc) will be the channels through which consumers access music and most probably, it will be available free. The already established name acts and some of the other as yet to be discovered creators of original MUSIC who somehow capture an audience's attention, will earn income from their creativity through gigs, touring, sponsorship and merchandise.. I think all the other creators of original work will be the 'amateurs' doing it for love with little or no financial gain.. Cantdosleepy made the point that "It is now essentially possible to make professional-sounding records in your own home with only a powerful computer and $1000 of equipment" which is true enough. But the last thing I care about as a music fan is 'professional-sounding records'.. What I've always been interested in is artists that have something unique about them and their music.. And that has got very little to do with professionalism and more to do with talent! But as life gets ever faster, it will be impossible to check out the huge numbers of artists making their music available to us for free,. So, as before, it will still fall to a select few 'opinion-formers' in the media or underground media to help us filter out all the dross.. It'll basically empower the old Payola system and the 'it's not what you know but WHO you know' systems even further. For example, if the Futureheads had never been signed to 679 and hadn't had zillions of record company dollars spent on marketing them, how would anyone know now to check out their new self-released material? As Bilbo said, "I think the music industry in the future will be different; not better or worse, just different!" In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if things got worse..

 20.
Ha ha I understand .. just pawns in a local feud
Mmm..? I hadn't thought of that with this venue, but it definitely happens with others we play at..
 21.
Well, you know me Nik - I won't let a woman come between me and a nice bass! BTW, if you happen to be in Brighton on Friday 9th May, I'll be playing at the Providence. When's your next Brighton gig?
Good man! I'd really like to get to your gig and hear the new set-up, but we're at The Elms in Worthing that night, sorry.. Our next Brighton gig is at Horatio's on The Pier on May 25th which is a Sunday.. When's your next gig?
 22.
I feel your pain brother, at least there wasn't a dB meter (or was there.....????)
Cheers. No dB meter visible on the wall - just the sneaky hearing aids in the punters heads! Old Git; we were recommended to the venue by another venue where we've had some very good gigs.. So we were hopeful of better things Just one of those things I suppose..
 23.
Sounds depressing. Sounds like it was all going on bar the meat raffle. We won't do those social clubs. Lead singer used to do the circuit in a previous life and he shudders at the thought of them. We got offered good money to play one recently and I went in and had a look around out of curiousity. It was grim. Like Phoenix Nights, without the comedy. Or it goes (usually while you're in the middle of playing something): "Do you know 500 Miles..?" "No we don't, sorry..." "You must know it. It goes: 'I could walk....'" "Yeah I know the song but we don't know the chords (ie p*ss off, I'm busy) They then try to sing you more of the song, to remind you how it goes. Fortunately we're now playing more gigs where people know what we play (punk, ska, new wave, indie covers) so those questions happen less. Last night though we got asked for Wham....
It was depressing.. And devoid of any of the humour Phoenix Nights has to offer! Your summing up of the pointless 'debate' between audience member and band is spot on! Luckily, this is not the normal sort of gig we do, so the scars should heal by next weekend
 24.
40th birthday party in a hotel. All went off really well, played three or four encores, everyone leaping around. Room big though and I struggled all night getting a good tone. Too boomy/too thin/too boomy etc. It was one of those set-ups where you sound really "clacky" on stage and really "woofy" off stage. It goes like that sometimes. Great gig though and we handed out loads of cards afterwards so may get a gig or two off the back of it.
I had that problem last week Matt - very frustrating! Glad to hear it was a good gig though. Which is more than I can say for ours last night at the Labour Club in Brighton.. Grim place with a Karaoke bar upstairs, intervals in the evening for Bingo, the Raffle and Play Your Cards Right, lots of brylcream and blue rinses on view;I'm sure you know the kind of place. We were constantly being asked by the audience to turn down so, instead of going all the way up to No.11, the volume ended up on -11! Requests for 'New York, New York' all evening from an old dear who looked like the twin-sister of the nasty gran in Catherine Tate's show. She kept saying to our singer: "Come on, fu*king play it, play it! I asked yous nicely first time, just fu*king play it! blink: So in the end, we dug very deep into our seriously unrehearsed 1950s reptoire so the audience could have a little dance.... All in all, very scary! Music may be the food of love but gigging in places like that is like a sh*t sandwich!
