The Wal Pro 2e is worth about £800-£1000 I suppose, but that kind of money still won't fetch me a really nice 70's P or J bass.. Not at the prices I've seen around at the moment!
 2.
Nik, you MUST be wanting the Bassman also, it's right up your street. Just imagine your Wal through that almighty compresion and chorus. Mick Karn eat your heart out... A lot easier to get past Mrs Silverfoxnik than 2.5 tonnes of H&K as well Chris
Funnily enough, I've no idea what the Bassman Nomad is Chris and must admit to not being a fan of 80s bass sounds particularly (Wals being the exception).. I've never liked that compressed / chorus sound that took all the guts out of a bass IMHO... My problem is that I really prefer 60's and 70's basses and bass sounds but in general, can't afford to buy basses from that era!!
 3.
Chris Squire Norman Watt-Roy John Entwistle Barry Adamson
+1 All brilliant and quite unique.. And as Bassassin said, Dennis Dunaway (Alice Cooper Group) and Jean Jacques Burnel (Stranglers) are also two favourites of mine.. I'd also add the guy who played with Elvis Costello and Roger Waters from Pink Floyd! Also, musn't forget Leigh Gorman, who is an amazing bass player; Leigh started off with Adam & The Ants in 1979 and then went on through the 80's with BowWowWow.. Seriously underrated musician! On a more frivolous note, Suzi Quatro??
 4. Hi Chris, PM sent in reply to yours re: the H&K... Thanks for coming up with my new strapline; will now sign everything in future 'Silverfoxnik - purveyor of 80's mojo' I can see my new business cards already.... Nik
 5.
Hi guys, Whilst scouring the internet for control cavity mods I recently came across a really novel idea: the TBX tone control. In most instances, this wouldn't be particularly useful on a bass, but it got me thinking - seeing as one can cut treble or bass, wouldn't it be possible to create a passive mid cut control, either by modifying the cap / resistor values on the TBX or by using a Push / Pull tone pot (with various gubbins attached to it) to switch between standard treble cut and mid cut? There's a similar topic on Talkbass which mentions the BluEQube used by Dingwall, but I'd really like to have a go at doing this myself. Any ideas?
No idea on this at all, as I'm not in any way up on electrics/electronics.. But I think it'd be an excellent thing to have to give greater tonal variety & flexibility to passive basses.. Good luck with it!
 6. My personal favourites are ABC - Jackson 5 Signed, Sealed Delivered, I'm Yours - Stevie Wonder Let's Get It On & What's Going On - Marvin Gaye But as the lists above show, there are so many fabulous basslines (and great songs) on the Motown label...
 7.
Anyone fancy giving me and a bass a lift from Battersea, South London? I can always travel to a tube or train station near you... and of course, will chuck in some petrol money for your troubles.
Hi s_u_y, Depending on numbers travelling on the day, Walman, Merton and me are travelling up in a minibus from the south coast, so we could probably rendezvous with you somewhere south of London if that helps? What gear are you planning on taking? Nik
 8. Completely off-topic but that Pedulla looks amazing! Good luck with the sale....
 9.
Egad. It's me. Pictures (+1 cheesy grin) on arrival of bass.
Congratulations! Expect to see big ceremony at the Bass Bash, John Cleese 'The Oscars' style acceptance speech and cheesy pictures in local press, etc, etc... And of course, you'll be donating the bass to a good and worthy cause somewhere..
 10.
The guy who did that first one has watched waaaay too much Pimp my Ride. Mark
+1
 11.
Ah I see. Thanks for that. Interesting, but not for me really. I'm just a bassic plonker, so would be lost amongst all that ethereal gear. Have fun!
No problem dude..
 12.
Cool Mark I was just checking out some Youtube bits and pieces and this great young bassist Damien Erskine - he's the nephew of the famous jazz drummer Peter 'Weather Report' Erskine - has put some very cool and informative instructional things on the site - check out this video with him explaining how to open up a simple C major scale by playing wider intervals - also check out his rhythmic variations: Here's another one with him showing how he plucks with thumb, index and middle fingers and also adds in a hammer on to create some cool plucking effects - a nice alternative to slap! It's cool stuff and he's a well chilled guy - someone who's good to learn from! M
Hi Mike Only just seen these YouTube clips.. Thanks - they're really good! Nik
 13. I think it depends what effects you want to use and why? Most great bass sounds we hear on record have been put through some effects, such as compressors, graphic or parametic e.q., chorus etc. That's usually done to get a great sound that works in a recorded context. Personally, I use effects in a gigging situation for just that same purpose, i.e. to improve the sound of the bass in a live situation.. Whenever I do that, I always put the bass directly into the amp first and then use the send & return on the amp to drive the effects units.. That way I can be sure I'm not compromising the quality of the original tone of the bass.. If however, you want to use your effects to create new and exciting sounds and be a bit more musically creative with the bass, then I think it's down to a choice between your desire to express your 'creativity' or your desire to get the very best tonal quality..
 14. Good idea for a thread and well done Rich! As well as my Roscoe Beck V and Wal Pro 2e, I'll bring my 1984 BC Rich Eagle and Fender Jazz V deluxe i anyone's interested? Will bring the Zoom B2 1.u + phones as well.. But am happy to bring my Gallien Krueger 700RB and Peavey 410 TVX (or 210 TX) if anyone wants to hear those combinations.. Though I guess there'll be a surplus of amazing rigs there! Happy to also bring along my Sony digital HDD camcorder along to document some of the day's events, for posterity and general amusement purposes of course!!

 16. ...A wet, windy and cold Monday morning BUMP! ..Quite the opposite of these dry, hot and funky sounding pick ups that really don't want to go to Ebay!
 17.
Hi guys, I was busy this week end. I'm a french guy that's why my english is so bad...
Please don't apologise - your English is excellent; it's our French that's bad!!
 18. Hi Chris, These days, when there's so much choice, I'd say it's really difficult to advise another person what amp is best for them.. Or even, what amp+cab is best for them! For example, I had a Hartke HA3500 a year ago and really disliked it, finding it too sterile.. maybe because my personal taste is for something warmer in tonal terms.. So now I have a GK 700 and I find it so much warmer sounding to my ears than the Hartke. Yet the Hartke had a valve preamp! How does that work out?? Only thing I could suggest is to try as many different bass+amp+cab combinations as you can..Are you coming to the Bash later this month as there's bound to be lots of gear there you could try with your bass? Nik
 19.
Nik - Thanks for the link over at the yahoo forum! Early serial number. Too bad about the modifications. Can't really understand the sellers comments: "a bit of work on it possible: the leather pickguard is not the original one, and I think the last owner glued it and the trussrod maybe to change."
Hey Mike Good to hear from you and no problem; I didn't want you guys not to see this one as it's a JG model... I agree that the seller's comments don't make much sense but I'm guessing a PM or two would sort it out? The modifications do take something away from the 'mystique' of the bass, being a really early model, but it's still nice to see one of these become available.. Hope all's well with you by the way...! Nik
 20. BUMP!! Any more takers now it's just 3 weeks to go??
 21. Saw this yesterday and my first thought was that it looks like a joy to play! I'm not in the market for more basses and I've never heard of this make before, but it looks great! Good luck with the sale...
 22.
I always thought the body design (certainly of the earliest Wals) bore some Shergold influence...I'm sure part of this stems from the fact that both Hayman/Burns/Shergold and Electric Wood made virtually all the components themselves, so form follows function...in a 1970's England way. Oh..bump... BB
Definitely the case I think.. As Beedster said, from a distance the Shergold & Wal body shapes are remarkably similar.. Being unashamedly retro and a fan of British innovation & craftsmanship, it's really nice to see two such excellent examples of that at it's best in this thread!
 23. Nice looking bass! Is it me or does it look like a Curbow?
 24.
Ampeg B15 is the best for that motown vibe.
+1 That'd be a really classic combination; all the warmth of the Ampeg through a good 15" speaker.. Just thinking this through though Chris, are you sure that the Trace is the right amp for the sound you're after? I used to have a GP7 410 combo years ago and my memory of TE's from then is that they have a pretty modern sound and the pre-shape always seemed to be great for slap and other 80's/90's bass tones but not necessarily vintage tones... Maybe it's a question of getting the right amp/cab combination?? Hope that doesn't throw you off track...
 25. Lovely basses, all 3 of them but the Shergold and the Wal are fabulous.. Enjoyed the slide shows too Good luck with the sale!
