1.
Instead of 11 boxes, tonight we're playing a big party gig in central London and we're hiring all the kit in - PA, amps, monitors, soundman - the lot. So I'll just be taking a bass, tuner pedal, leads, a spare pack of strings and, er, that's it. What a nice change from a car load of junk!
Sounds good... Have a good one Matt!
 2.
To be honest I am not convinced scale length makes a massive difference to B string definition, having owned 34,35 and 36" basses. I think it is more down to neck construction and overall build quality/materials. Cheers ped
+1 I've had a few basses that are 34" scale which have great sounding low 'B' strings, thinking of a couple of Musicmans and my Roscoe Beck V to mention just a few.
 3.
+1 I'm in total admiration of all those here who have pared it right down to a very minimal amount of gear.. It's partly a confidence thing I think; having confidence in your gear and in yourself as a player.. and being able to adapt and work in any situation. When I used to manage bands for a living, I got so tired of the reptitious complaints about a bad gig, bad PA, bad monitors etc, etc. So I used to point out to them that when The Beatles played Shea Stadium in NYC in the mid to late 60s, they didn't even have monitors, so what were they complaining about!! Moral of the story is that I must learn my own lessons...
 4.
why 3 basses guys? I just take 2 basses in hardcases, amp and voltage regulator in rack, 1 cab, and one pedalboard, including a DI (in case sh*t happens with the amp)
Good question.. I always take a back up 5 string, so that's two 5 strings.. Plus one 4 string bass which is tuned down a tone for about 4 numbers in the set.. I keep meaning to relearn those tunes on my 5 string in the dropped key but keep forgetting to get around to it. Stewblack: like you, our guitarist always takes a spare amp and a spare cab. In fact, he takes spares of everything! I figure that if my amp goes I can DI straight out of my Zoom B2 1.u.
 5. Hi Folks, Just got back from a gig tonight and was thinking about how many seperate items I'm constantly moving around every time we gig. It's currently standing at 8 seperate, individually portable items as follows: 1 x Bass in semi-flight case 1 x Bass in gig bag 1 x Bass in gig bag 1 x Amp in gig bag 1 x Leads bag 1 x Fx case 1 x 410 cab 1 x bag for guitar stands Obviously, I'm also moving myself around in my car to transport this stuff from A to B, but I'm thinking specifically of bass related items here! Have tried but can't seem to get it down less than this at the moment.. How about you? Nik
 6.
Damm I keep missing you whenever you're over my way Nik ... Just necked a couple of beers so cant drive
Hi Nick, very wise - especially at this time of year.. No worries, something will crop up that works out.. How's things with you? Nik
 7.
Nice selection of working basses Nik.
Thanks Homer - the RBV is absolutely amazing, so much so, the DJ5 hasn't had a look in! I've not been this happy with the sound of a bass for as long as I can remember
 8. Hi Homer, Interesting post! Personally, I can't get below 7 basses, which are justified in my OCD way as follows: Working basses: 1 x Roscoe Beck 5 string = main gigging bass 1 x Lakland DJ5 = main back up for gigging bass 1 x Wal Pro 2e 4 string = graphite reinforced neck, so perfect for the drop tuned numbers in the set Others: 1 x Hondo Ric copy = first proper gigging bass bought for me by Mum, so can't ever be sold for sentimental reasons 1 x P bass copy = because everyone's got to have a Precision type bass in their collection 1 x Jazz bass copy = you've gotta have a jazz bass in the collection, especialy a 4 string as it's great for slapping 1 x BC Rich Eagle = everyone's gotta have a through neck bass in their collection All totally justified in my tiny little mind of course, especially as the P Bass, Jazz Bass and the Rickenbacker are 'archetypes' of bass guitar design really so it's nice to have that to hand. The way I see it, it keeps me happy and doesn't hurt anybody else except the old bank balance Nik
 9. Hi Alan Just to keep you posted, I will be seeing this person over the weekend and will get back to you then. Nik
 10.
Hi Guys It is actually the deep one (standard depth which I think is about 14"). Let me know if it's any good to you
PM Sent..
 11.
Red Lion Stubbington, with an overfull complement as I think we have both keys & the stand in guitarist. Lucky its one of the larger stage areas!!!!
Have a good one Al! Where's Stubbington? Gigging myself in Eastbourne otherwise I'd have like to come along and see you.

 13.
As described, a 4u ABS Rack Unit for sale- excellent condition. Yours for £25 plus (say) £10 P&P or pickup from Surrey
Hi OHM, I need one of these but not the really deep ones as I only have a Gallien Krueger amp to house at the moment and they are relatively small items as amps go. Do you have dimensions please? Nik
 14.
Nik, live near Gatwick, no more than half hour from Worthing. We gig there at the Half Brick, check the bands website for direct contact www.blues-business.co.uk Alan
Thanks Alan, That's a help. I'm going to chat with the person I mentioned tonight and will get back to you. This would be a Xmas present for them so could be a relatively quick sale for you possibly... What sort of condition is it all in and do you have any pics? Thanks Nik
 15.
Thats filth like seeing Girls Aloud naked!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tell us more?
 16.
That's interesting that you choose those to gig with over the others, I think Chris May would be proud to hear that.
Definitely!
 17. Hi blues business, Whereabouts in West Sussex are you as I know someone in Worthing looking for a rig like this? Nik
 18. That's a wonderful collection of basses!! How on earth do you choose what to play?
 19. Great basses - you won't be disappointed! Always wanted one myself and still regret not buying one a few years back.. Oh, and Happy 21st by the way!
 20.
Steve - Hmm...i just don't seem to cut through, i've tried boosting the mids on the bass on stage, without much affect, but as i've just mentioned, i've adjusted my amp setup a bit, so we'll how how that goes. Not too sure about swopping out cabs etc, i'm happy with the rig. I think that it's just the following...the F Bass is too polite...too well made, not 'enhanced' beyound the realms of reason, making it an awesome studio instrument, it's so crisp, so clean, so clear, it just sings in there. But on stage, it's not rude enough, not aggressive enough. I tried that new Fender Jazz 24 bass thingy, and the sound was massive...the eq and pickups are totally warped to the max and as a result you get that huge sound, the bass just feels crap in comparison to the F Bass and Marleaux. .. i dunno'...tough one guys!
I think that you've said it all above.. i.e., that sometimes, the high-end boutique basses are just too hi-fi, so they sound great solo or in very controlled situations like studios. But in a live context, they seem to disappear.. It's just my personal opinion but, when we talk about certain bass sounds we love on records, I think there's a tendency to make a very simple mistake about what we think we're hearing. And that's because we're forgetting that those particular bass sounds don't sound the same in isolation as they do in amongst the mix... There's every possibility that if we could hear that particular bass sound we love solo and completely seperate from the rest of the instruments, it would sound quite different to how we perceive it to be when we are hearing it within the mix. So, what I'm trying to say rather long-windedly, is that it's better to go for the bass that sounds great in amongst all the other instruments in the band and not the one that sounds great solo. And because Fender basses have been played on so many of our favourite records that we reference time and time again, maybe that's the way to go?
 21.
Hi I have the Zoom B2.1u and I'd like to set up some simple effects on it but I can't see how I do it. I'd like to have a channel that just has a wahwah. Just that, no amp modeling, no compressor, no other effects... as if I'd just added a wahwah footpedal in the chain. Likewise the flanger and octaver. I'd also like to have the SVT model with each of these things added (on separate channels) I can't see how to do it. Any clues? Thanks OG
It's almost exactly how I use my B2.1.u except I use the Tube model with other things added. Once you've sussed it out, it's really easy.. Good luck!
 22.
Is that a Mk1 Pro? A Custom has two pick-ups and 4 pots?
There were a series of 1 pick up models made specifically like this in the early 90s I believe and they are Custom models as far as I know. I seem to recall there were also some made like this in the early 80s as well, but that could just be my Monday morning senility creeping in already! It's possible that other Wal users like WalMan, Walbassist etc can tell you more as I only use a Pro model...
 23.
Nice one Nik. I must get to see you one day, and may even have another go at getting a gig at the Elms. Been told its got a bit more rocky recently. We did it a couple or three years ago just prior to Christmas to the PRS man checking up on their licence and what we played . Nightmare Just back from a killer night at The Fountain in Chi (always a good crowd singing along there). And the landlord was so happy ('cos he was busier than the Slug & Lettuce next door all night he reckoned) he upped the cash completely unprompted I wish they could all be like tonight!!!! Decent landlord, noisy crowd - including some loverly ladeez - MARVELLOUS
Hi Al, Great to be given some respect by the landlord like that! Thoroughly deserved I'm sure... Regarding gigs, you guys and Tony, our guitarist who books all of our gigs, should have a chat about different venues etc.. See you soon, Nik
 24.
Looking for a cunning plan myself
Mmm.... I know Al, let's share it! That'd be very cunning indeed... And very stupid too! Pint???
 25.
Wow. Two of 'em. I'd have em both if I could, just coz they're great! Methinks the Midnight Wine one could be a steal a steal given it includes the Hiscox case.
Definitely! Must admit to being very tempted...
